Great laptop, I got the 2022 model.
My camera switch got loose then broke, so now my camera doesn't work at all.
I recommend just leaving it on and putting tape over the camera now.

      Warranty repair?

I used to say that a l5p at this price in 2023 is not worth its price and one should wait for a better deal or the 40 series, however, with nvidia butchering the 4070, and with amd using refreshed zen3+ chips (and with the 7-4-HS/HX chips that actually saw an upgrade looking not any cheap in the slightest), I dont really think we would be getting much better deals any time soon.

If you need a solid machine that works wonderful out of box theres no other choice.

    • AMD is also using zen 2 chips in cheap latops, Ryzen 3 7320u… They are just as shitty as intel.

  • +9

Wow, inflation sucks. I got the original L5P model with 5800h, 3070 8gb and 32gb ram + 1tb ssd for $2400 in April 2021. Still goes like a rocket. Cannot believe the 3070ti and 4070 have almost zero improvement (apart from frame gen on the 40 series).

    • Yeah I had see the 3070 one for around 2k before years ago. This is not worth it.
But also 4070 is totally not worth it.
5800 vs 6800 vs 7xxx seems also to be almost no different

5x00H/HS is Zen 3 CPU cores with Vega graphics.
6x00H/HS is Zen 3+ CPU cores with RDNA 2 graphics.

        7x35HS is refreshed 6x00H.
7x40HS is Zen 4 CPU cores with RDNA 3 graphics.

    • Bought the Intel Nuc x15 (i7 11800h, 16gb, 145W 3070, 1tb ssd) in Jan 22 for $1999 and both the gpu and cpu were a gen behind then. I took it to 32gb for another $120 a while later. After numerous issues and a replacement they've offered me a refund.

Jumped onto some sites to check prices and for the same money just getting them to replace it again is probably better value for performance than spending that $2k on anything available now. The pretty much the same deal (this one) that was just out of reach before ($2k was my stretch budget at the time) , but with less ram than offered back then is somehow a 'deal'.

The big chain stores are still selling 3050s for more than I paid for my 3070. Even the Dell outlet scratch and dents are way over priced.

If I want an actual generational upgrade I need to put another $2k with the $2k refund and still need to look for a good deal, because I can still buy a 3070ti at that price point…

      • Lol, remember when the gtx 1070 8gb was the current mid-tier desktop gpu? Frequent deals around $500-550. Now everyone is swooning over current gen card deals if they miraculously fall below $1k. Insanity.

        • Yup, prices have gone insane. Reminds me of the old days when home computers were new.

All of my laptops have been around the $2000 mark and replaced every few years. This is the first time that the $2000 isn't a major upgrade, although it is a slightly shorter period of time than usual. This time I can't even buy the same amount of performance for the money, 1.25 years later.

The tiers would be one down at the price points as well. 4070 would be 4060 and the 4090 wouldn't exist.

          • @johndoh89: I guess we're finally seeing the misery of inflation again. if you check out the RBA's inflation calculator, from 1970-1990, the average annual inflation was 10%. Prices doubling every 7 years. that's some scary shit. Apparently Argentina's current inflation rate is 100%.

            • @eggboi: The increases are far outpacing the inflation rates, we are seeing price gouging by greedy companies trying to milk everything out of people before everything goes to & $#@.

Inflation would be the 4080 being called a 4070 like it actually is, priced around $3000 with sales into the $2500 range. Not the $5k nonsale prices we're seeing.

              • @johndoh89: You're not wrong. Though different goods have different actual inflation levels, it's mostly greed. Also having seen the profit potential back when miners were hoovering up the cards, and then again during covid, just fuels said greed.

Good deal, but it comes a little late.

    • Honestly it's a little better. Stops some people from making regretful decisions since we know what to expect from the new generation of laptops

Just wondering how warranty would work if this is purchased
Wonder how the battery life is with 500nit screen
    Are there any similar deals?

    • Someone else may need to chime in just in case I need to be corrected, but I've got an ideapad gaming 3 with the 5800h and rtx3060 and battery life is not that great. The IPS panel included in my laptop lists only 165hz as the available refresh rate which is a bit crap for battery. Would have liked a 60hz option without having to create a custom profile since I don't need the battery drain of 165hz when I'm just doing spreadsheet work.

Lenovo offer an international warranty service automatically so you're covered under warranty.

      • I would have thought the discrete GPU would be more of a drain than higher refresh rate?

        • Cant switch off discrete GPU on the ideapad gaming 3 unfortunately or leave it as the only GPU, only the Legion range has the mix switch, should've paid a bit more for the Legion.

      • the legion is great for switching refresh rate quickly. fn+R instantly goes between 60hz and 165hz. switching discrete gpu to integrated makes more difference though.

No need for warranties in Australia. All products purchased here are covered under Australian Consumer Law.

      • +1

But isnt newegg from US, also in the advo it says shipping from US?

        • They are operating within Australia. The location of the actual business is irrelevant.

If Australian consumers can purchase products within Australia, then they are operating in Australia and the ACL applies.

      • +2

Does it cover non AU retailers though. Newegg is US aren't they.

Either way running the gauntlet of claiming support won't be straightforward. I had enough issues with local stock + an onsite plan. Parts can be an issue, so hopefully this is a model variant they also sell here.

Agree it would be more difficult dealing with an online international retailer, however, there is still a foot to stand on.

    • +1

I don't think the screen is a major issue in terms of battery use, its not 4k and you can lower both the brightness and refresh rate. If you want to save battery you can also disable the dGPU in the BIOS.

      First line:

1.1 The Australian Consumer Law (“ACL”) applies to sales of products to consumers within Australia and also ordinarily applies extra-territorially to purchases made by Australian consumers from outside Australia.

Newegg is compelled to uphold the ACL if they are doing business with Australian customers

      And here: https://kb.newegg.com/knowledge-base/terms-and-conditions-au…

5.11. Statutory Rights Under the Australian Consumer Law

Our products come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded.

      • Well yes but also bear in mind per the ACCC there's not much assistance that will or can be provided in enforcing these guarantees to overseas entities either. It's definitely a card you can play if you have issues with support but there isn't actually any way to hold overseas sellers to account.

        Products from overseas businesses
When an overseas business sells products directly to consumers in Australia, the business must follow the Australian Consumer Law, including the consumer guarantees.

In practice it can be difficult to get a repair, replacement or refund from an overseas business if there’s a problem with the product or service, and the help Australian consumer protection agencies can provide is limited.

If you can’t resolve a problem with an overseas business, you should ask the consumer protection agency where the seller is based if it can help you.

    This at/under $2k would be a deal, at $2400 it's beige.
Too bad the 4070 laptop gpu is crap which is artificially inflating the price of last generation tech.

    • +1

Most other models are similar in price if not more and with less inputs. So atm this seems to be the cheapest i could find in the aussie market

good deal ! cpu and gpu is last gen
