Thanks to user @Flickit : The Paypal method to avoid the $70 subscription fee:

They charge you for the hardware as soon as you go through the checkout, then they charge for the subscription a little later, so you need to cancel the Gopro Paypal payment permission to block the subscription payment…

Straight after you finish the checkout go to Paypal >>> Settings>>> Payments>>> select the Gopro auto-payment permission and cancel it so Gopro dont have permission to bill you again in the future…

This link should get you to the auto-payments:
https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/autopay/

An example of a Paypal Auto-payment permission page, go there and click the cancel:

(You seem to have a bit of time but to play it safe maybe have the Paypal page open and logged in before finalizing the checkout on the Gopro site so you can cancel the payment permission as fast as possible)

FYI: I tried the above method and only paid $475 for the camera :-)

seems like a good price. i'd be upgrading from a hero 7 black, anyone got any thoughts on whether thats worth it for that? in my case my batteries are nearing end of useful life so i figure id be buying new batteries anyway if i stuck with the 7

    • +2

yep, worth it if you actually do use your gopro lol. I have the Hero 10 and also came from a hero 7, and it's way more responsive to touch input, doesn't glitch out as much (the 10 will sometimes fail to turn off, but it will just hang on the "shutting down" screen, whereas my 7 would appear to be off, but then 1-2 hours later it would be hot and the battery drained).

cool features like horizon lock, and custom settings profiles. also 4K 120fps if you need/want that. No huge improvement in video quality or stabilisation (apart from horizon lock)

      • cheers mate. i just bought it lol plus the enduro 2 pack and charger. i have a small outdoors channel and kind of sick of relying on my phone as my current hero 7 batteries only get me about 20 minutes before dying its just pointless. cant complain for just over $500 to also get the extra batteries. the 4k at more than 30fps looks good to me too

        • +1

Yeah sounds like you’ll love the hero 11 then. So nice not having to remove the stupid case to change batteries too lol.

      • +1

Yeah never turns off screen stays black. Why tf dont they fix the issue

  • Price match JB and use $50 perks?

    • +1

If you purchase at JB I don't think you'll be able to block the yearly subscription. Purchasing via GoPro would be cheaper if you didn't want GoPro sub

      • What do you mean you can’t block the sub? Can’t you just cancel it by removing payment info? Seems illegal to force-sub without consent

  • +1

This or wait for the new DJI Pocket 3? Thanks

    • +1

For $475, I will prefer Go Pro 11, and DJI Pocket 3 will be above $650, I assume

      • +1

        $475… how?

          • @Sulpu: Ok cool. So don't they cancel the subscription if subs charges does not go through?

            • @Kunalb84: Yes, they do, but do you need the membership? If you need the membership, then go with $545.

            • +4

@Kunalb84: The membership/subscription is a bit pointless IMO:

              • The camera replacement thing costs $150, plus the $70 sub fee, so $220 for one year insurance, it's not value for money to me…
              • Discounted accessories, but they only ship batteries with a new camera , and other accessories you have to pay shipping on after the initial purchase so it's only cost effective to buy accessories with your initial camera purchase, you get the accessory discount on your initial order even if you use the trick to dodge paying the subscription….
              • Cloud storage, but that only lasts as long as you're paying the $70 per year sub fee, and uploading a stack of 4k footage = a lot of time…
              • unlimited use of the Quick App, I'm not sure what value this is, I've never used it, it "may" be worthwhile to some people though….
              • @FLICKIT: It depends on your situation, really… I had 2 Gopros (Hero5 Black and Hero9 Black) and one was smashed and the other out of warranty but glitching like a m@$)+! so getting the subscription was a no brainer.

                • @educalifa: Each to their own… I guess I've been lucky, 12 years of using Gopros, fairly heavy use, and I haven't broken one yet… I've swiped a couple off my helmet clipping trees and hitting the ground, but I've only ended up with a few superficial scratches on them, lol…

                  • @FLICKIT: They seem to work really well off road and that includes my glitchy Hero9 Black! But as soon as I put the Hero9 on my race bike it last maybe a lap on the track before it freezes or stops recording audio or decides to turn itself on and off every 10s or whatever other party trick it feels like presenting on the day lol

The Hero5 Black got flung at over 200kph and the rear screen got smashed early in its life but it still recorded perfectly all the way til last month when I sent it in. Only issue is that without the rear screen I could never update its firmware or change any of the settings properly.

          • +1

@Sulpu: I was reading that thinking "that sounds familiar", then I realized I wrote it, lol

          • +1

@Sulpu: And say hello to Amy.

            • @craving: Amy is asking for money, I am going to ignore her ;-)

              • @Sulpu: Yea, I received the same email from Amy Brown last night, I'll respond to her once I got the camera, just to make sure ;-)

          • @Sulpu: I cancelled as fast as possible and my $475 is sitting as "authorisation" so hopefully GoPro process the order and havent caught on to the cancelling sub

            • +2

@cplagz: You should be fine, she'll be right :)… Every deal there's always a bit of panic about it, sometimes it takes a few days for them to process orders and such, but it always works out ok… (no doubt they will catch up with it one day, but it's worked for about 3 years now so it's unlikely to change "today")

              • +1

@FLICKIT: Shipped =D thanks for the deal and paypal trick! Will go great for surf trip to Sumatra soon

          • @Sulpu: I got the 3rd email from Amy; tried to contact her, but the email bounced back. lol

  • +1

For those looking at the accessories bundle (like me), the total price of them all individually comes to ~$646, vs ~$614 for the bundle

  • +8

I have been using the GoPro HERO11 Black for a few months now, and it has been awesome. I had a problem with the 10 where pans would be jerky (otherwise good IQ and great stabilisation).

My holiday kit now is a Sony A7R4 + 35mm F1.4 for photos, GoPro 11 in my pocket for super stable handheld video and a DJI Mini 3 for drone shots (when I can be bothered carrying it). Super light kit for amazing, easy photos and videos.

    https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/794214058

    • Damn! fantastic video. I have to make a plan to visit Lady Elliot island.

      • Do it. We did the 4nights get the 5th free in Jan and it was just the best family holiday. Some of the best easy, off the beach snorkelling anywhere in Aus, super relaxing, great food. Was amazing.

Entire video was done just holding the GoPro in my hand. No gimbal, no mounts, no selfie sticks, no polarising filters. Just point and shoot, then iMovie for putting the footage together. Stupid easy and great memories for the kids.

        • Awesome video. We are off to Cairns and going snorkelling next week and I think this has sold me on the GoPro. Now to figure out how to get it for the best price before we leave tomorrow.

    • Money bags over here…

    • Mine arrives tomorrow with the creator bundle! Can't wait :)

In hindsight I would've got this deal instead, did the loophole to avoid buying the sub, and got the volta separately, but hindsight is a bitch

    • Same! Such amazing videos. Just checked flights and accommodation for lady Elliot island.

    • Do you have any issue with the camera being shut down because it is too hot? They will send me a replacement soon and promised to test it before sending me. I could only record the 4K videos between 20-30’ never longer period than that.

  • I see a lot of people complaining about heat. How does it go at FHD or 2K?

    • Check out the DCRainmaker video on this topic.

      • Tl;dr overheats is a yes?

        • +3

Only if there is zero air movement over it. Otherwise is fine. I have never had my 11 overheat on me and that's using 4k with horizon lock.
          But YMMV

    • I haven't had any heat issues on the 10, 4k 50fps hypersmooth no boost, comms and gps off, but I only use it for bushwalking, boating, and as a helmet cam, MTB & motorbike, "action", what it's designed for.. Bushwalking and boating tend to be shorter clips, on the helmets I record continuously for hours…

Most the people that seem to complain about overheating seem to be the people doing their best to make click-bait videos to make money, trying to use it as a desktop cam and the likes, I'm not sure why they don't buy something fit-for-purpose…. (10 & 11 seem to be about the same heat wise)

(Edit: To add to this… I've seen surfers complain about heat issue when they've been using them in a dive housing, I assume a combination of trapped internal heat plus the sun through the case, it's kinda understandable)

  • +1

Make sure you order any extra batteries you want with the camera. GoPro won’t ship batteries without a camera, so you won’t get the accessories discount with your subscription on them. I had a polite whinge about this with online chat and they sent me a free Shorty.

    • +1

No, that's the mini (no screen)

      • +1

        and a fixed, non-changeable battery…

  • Anyone experiencing an error message when placing order? - "We're sorry, but your order could not be placed. Please confirm your address and payment information is correct. If you feel this is a mistake, please contact our customer support team and request a callback by clicking here." Tried different emails and incognito mode as well. Still the same error…

    • They seem to have issues with P.O. Boxes and some addresses…

  • Been waiting for the deal to come back, bought the 11 black along with a whole bunch of accessories.

Now, time to sell the 8Black

    • +1

is it better to purchase accessories separately or is via bundle? Its a gift to my Son - would appreciate any advise. If accessories - what all would be good - thanks

      • I purchased the accessories separately since the bundle wasn't relevant to me apart from the batteries. I needed accessories more for Motorcycling.

  • If paid via paypal - will I get invoice from Gopro or Paypal? Need to claim tax in Airport. Will there be any issue if paid via paypal?

  • Enticing but gonna wait, I think they're still using the same camera sensor from GP7? maybe 12 brings new hardware.

    • +1

The 11 has a new sensor so it can do 8:7 aspect ratio… Google it ;)

      • oh nice! maybe time for an upgrade ;)

  • thanks OP… impulse buy :) a new gopro at 475 is a steal :)

  • "Amy" from gopro emailing about failed subscription payment. Still waiting on shipping confirmation. Any risk that it wont go through?

    • +1

It'll be fine, ignore Amy ;)

      • nice! just need to grab a few aftermarket mods and rather wait till the camera ships before i outlay any more

  • thanks OP! Ordered mine at 5pm yesterday, but still no order processing or tracking of order.

I get this message when i try and track through GoPro's website

'We don't see it, but hold tight.
We couldn’t find your order, but it’s usually a timing thing. If you recently made a purchase, please allow a few hours for our systems to process it.'

Got Amy's email at 5:25am this morning, she clocking in them hours!

    • It'll be fine, this is all fairly normal… :)

      • i literally just got the confirmation of order email. thanks for reassurance! now to buy accessories. Is there anything wrong with sticks / water grips from AliExpress?

  • Shipped. With PayPal subscription cancelation trick

  • Did anybody get the 10% studentbeans working with this?! 🧐

    • 3% unidays code worked for me.
      $461.69 for the HERO11.

  • Just ordered with accessory bundle and Gumby mount. What are the best 3rd party accessories?

    • Also shoutout to Revoult single use cards

    and such … .. .

(All 4k 50fps, hypersmooth, no boost, comms + GPS off, around 60,000kbps, roughly 8 hours on a 256gb card)

  • If I pay by card can I still cancel the susbscription afterwards?

  • gopro 11 or gopro max 360? Confused - can someone throw some light pls

  • Received mine yesterday along with a bunch of accessories, used it for the first time on my ride home, have it in the protective housing attached to my motorcycle helmet.
recording at 4k, 60FPS with max stabilisation.
My old Hero 8 Black would like the ride to work and ride home before needing a recharge and that was recording at 1440p. I've done two trips, and if % is to by, it'll last another ride home and a half on the 11. So not to bad.
HOWEVER, after I got to the office today, took it out of the protective housing to charge the battery and yep, this thing RUNS HOT, way way hotter than I ever felt the 8.
So do be aware of that.

Edit - oh and Amy has now sent me two emails regarding my cancelled subscription payment. Poor girl, she'll be perpetually waiting for that payment.

    • I don't bother running the dive housing on the modern Gopros since they're reasonably water resistant and have heat issues, I just run a silicon case for scuff protection most the time….

Battery life isn't great, if you want to record for extended periods it's probably worth investing in the USB pass-through door then power the camera from a battery-bank in your pocket:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09BBJTF8R
I run one of those doors with a short right-angle cable which makes it a bit tidier and easier to unplug the USB-C up near my neck before taking the helmet off:
      https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08J7HP5BB

(I'll have to cut up the silicon case if I want to use it with the passthough door)

    • *hero 8 would last the ride to work and home rather

  • I did this with the paypal trick, Amy has reached out to me twice and my initial payment is still in authorising - has it been caught on now ?

when should i expect the shipping info / delivery ? I ordered on weekend so presuming weekend + public holiday has caused delays.

Would they cancel the whole thing otherwise and release the auth ?

    • It should be fine, weekend orders often take a while to process, US company, shipped from Asia…. Ignore Amy ;)

      • a third email and still no sign of it or confirmed payments - i think thats it … the trick is over. RIP

        • +1

Gopro have issues with P.O. Boxes and some addresses, orders hang for no real reason, so there's a good chance you may have an address issue and it's not related to the subscription dodge…

  • +2

Thanks OP for the trick, it worked flawlessly.
    Purchased on 03/05/23
Order shipped and on the way

    • +1

      Hey Pass,
Just wondering when did you get your shipping and confirmation etc?

We just made the purchase this morning 6th, card was charge but we blocked the subscription.

      Hopefully the trick still works.
      Thanks 🙏🏻

      • +1

Hey just commenting here, bought it 4 days ago, got the email from Amy but ignored it. Got the shipping and confirmation the next day!! Worked perfectly

        • many thanks!
was holding off but maybe I'll start picking some accessories from amazon

      • +1

Be mindful weekend orders sometimes don't get processed until mid week…

        • Thanks FliCkiT 😃

Things you should know before purchasing GoPro:

    1. The camera is NOT waterproof. Well, first months it is waterproof, but then one time you find it is not working because it is full of water inside. Google, and you will find many people complaining about this. Maybe it is waterproof against rain, but you can't swim with it or do snorkeling (what I did and the camera didn't survive).

    2. The subscription is useless. They say you can exchange the camera anytime with no questions, but in reality, you are simply unable to use this subscription. There is no button on the site that you want to return or exchange the camera. You have to contact support. And there are only 2 ways you can contact the support: live chat, which simply doesn't work on any PC in any browser (again, you can find many topics on the Internet about this including GoPro site where support replies "We checked with technical specialists and everything works"), or request a call back (and they never call you back).

Really, they behave like a scam company. They provide you with some features/services, but do everything you were unable to use them. Is it possible to fix the chat or use another chat if this one is buggy? Yes! Is it possible to add a page to the site where you can request an exchange? Yes! But they deliberately don't do this, even though people have been complaining about it for 2+ years.

  • I dont see %15 off anymore (but subscription is 50% off).
Is it me or party over? Was about to pull the trigger..

    • +1

Give it a few days… They tend to have rolling specials, one will end then a couple of days later a new one will start… It's basically been 15% off for many months now…

  • If I just want video, for filming fish while fishing 😃, would I just go with a mini, battery and waterproof cases?
Can the minis send the video back to your phone for a 'live feed'?

    • +1

The mini has a fixed non-replaceable battery, so limited record time and limited life-span..
