What's Your New Car's Wait Time?

Just curious to hear what the wait times are for any new car ?

Model?
Booking Date?
Wait times?

Ex : I booked :

Model : Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Petrol Highlander
Booked on : 15 Mar 2023
Wait time : 3-6 Months

Dealer called me yesterday to ask if I was interested in a non sun roof version of the same car for shorter wait time(may be next few weeks delivery) for $1500 lesser.

I didn't accept the dealer's offer.

So from what I am reading, hardly anyone on OzBargain buys cheap cars, like low end hatchbacks or sedans?

    • +1

This is OzBargain. We don't roll in anything less than C63 AMGs. Understand this.

      • Wow if Ozbargain users don't roll in anything less than a C63, then Whirlpool users don't roll in anything less than a GT 63 S.

        • I sound like foolish and poor, both together.. I can't even fully recognise those car models. haha. Looks like I belong to a minority on OzB. Where are the drivers of Camry, Swift, i10, Prius, Jazz, Polo, Corolla, Alto, Altima, Mazda6, City, Brio, Civic and alike?

          • @virhlpool: Prius is discontinued. So is City and a bunch of other cars you mentioned.

Also have you seen how much a new Civic is?

          • +2

@virhlpool: Some of those stopped being 'cheap' cars a couple of years ago

            • @spackbace: A Prius wasn't exactly a cheap option when mine was built, and that was 2009.

As Kerfuffle said, a number of those are gone- mainly the little roller skate ones :p

I bought a Corolla sedan, but it wasn't low end. It's top-trim and hybrid (second most expensive Corolla after the GR)

    • I drive a 1999 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. I can’t afford a new car.

  • the main question I have is, if you order a 2023 model and it takes more than a year or two, do you get a two year old model in 2024 or 2025?

    • +3

You get whatever year model they are up to, and will likely have to pay more than you were initially told if prices have gone up for successive model years.

Best not to order and just go have a look at what various dealers have on their lot or call around and be prepared to go interstate for a model you want, there is always cars sitting around without a buyer, not for long though.

  • Just switched from a Corolla Cross Hybrid with an ETA of early 2024 to a Lexus UX250h with an ETA of early June. Got lucky with the colour, otherwise ETA is 12 months+.

    • Yep, I was initially after a UX250H fully loaded, was told wait time 18 months, but an ES300H had just landed at the dealer so went with that instead, build date is January, why tf is taking 3 months to get here from Japan!

    Model: Kia Seltos GT AWD
    Ordered: mid-Dec 2022
Received: late Mar 2023, 3ish month wait!

    • I wonder why the Seltos wait times are a lot less than other models. Must be in less demand

  • I'm waiting for the iPhone 27, which will be a car and phone in one. So a couple of decades I reckon

    Model - Tesla Model Y
    Booking Date - June 2022
    Wait times - Oct 2022 (4 months)

  • anyone looking for a new car i HIGHLY recommend James at https://carhelper.com.au/
He has found new cars within weeks for us 2 times in last year, when no one else had them available or months or years.
And he also got them with some very good discounts.

  • Model? Prado GXL
    Booking Date? April 2022
Wait times? Still waiting - was told at sea .. maybe May 2023

  • After about 15 months it’s down to a few days.

  • Toyota Camry SX Hybrid
    Paid deposit July 2022
    ETA is July 2023

  • I should have laid down the deposits on 5 X Rav 4 some 24months ago and resold them all at a buy it now premium :p

      LC70 would've yielded greater returns 😛

  • 2011 Camry here and this thing still drives like a new car - only complain is lack of CarPlay otherwise, it's a great car in terms of reliability and maintenance cost.

    • +1

Wouldn't be too hard to fit an aftermarket unit with a fascia kit

    • Camry has maintenance cost!!??

      • +3

        It's called servicing …

    • I doubt the ports are the only reason her Toyota has taken 2 years… but yeah, is a PITA

      • ????

        • Oh, the main interviewee in the video linked was a woman waiting for a Toyota for nearly 2 years, I just don't think the ports are the main reason for the Toyota delay, I think that's at Toyota's end.

The ports being back up is a pain.

          • @seannami: My status is in production, with a port/plant date next month and dealer eta date the following month. Do you think this is accurate from Toyota?

            • @boostpak: Honestly don't know- I have an MG on orde adn was going by third hand information to be fair- but the ports are sitting at 4-6 weeks (east coast at least), though apparently they are processing the cars in no particular order (some are taking one day, some are taking 6 weeks with no real way of predicting which).

A friend who ordered a Rav 4 was at 12 months and it hadn't even made it to production mid-last year- hence I didn't think the ports were the primary issue. Others who have ordered Toyota might be able to be a bit more helpful.

  • You should of taken the deal, there's already a 6 month backlog of cars waiting on ships, they stopped sending new ships. You'll be waiting well over a year no matter what they told you.

    • Even if they have a port date and its in production?

      • If its in production, it dosen't have a port date since all carmakers have stopped shipping cars to Australia since there is already a 6 month wait for a port spot. So after all those already completed and waiting are shipped and quarantined again from waiting around as these ones are, 12 months might be a very optimistic timeframe.

        • it dosen't have a port date since all carmakers have stopped shipping cars to Australia

Umm wut? At least for the west coast they're still shipping

          • @spackbace: Um…no? True once it's in port on the east coast ATM the delivery is absolutely anyone's guess (mines at 1 month and counting), but they're still coming.

        • @bomberswarm2 I have a port date and dealer delivery date though??

          • @boostpak: East coast? Delivery date might be a bit…fuzzy… Since the dealers have no influence on the order quarantine inspect or fumigate, they can't really give a set date (mine has been in the port of Melbourne for around a month, dealer date was first week of April)

          • @boostpak: Yea I had a port and dealer delivery date too. Port date was 21/2, dealer date 7/3. Ended up docking 8/3, dealer 31/4. This was also before it became a huge problem, it was mid March when new ships stop being sent.

  • Minutes.

    Toyota Prado Kakadu
    Waiting since Feb 2022.
Been told 6 months, extend a month every time I call and it's nowhere to be seen.

They sent me some sort of list and apparently there's some info in there that they shouldn't have been sent to me, as order from big fleet company with wait time of 1 - 2 months were being built too lol. so much for the queue.

  • The wife is getting a new car.

    Model : Range Rover Sport
    Booked on : October 2022
Wait time : Will hopefully see it by the end of the year. Apparently they start building the hybrid versions in June, so we will see.

  • I couldnt wait any longer. Called up almost all of dealers across Vic and was lucky to find the car I wanted - deep sea highlander.

So I paid 1k as deposit immediately to reserve it and picked it up 5 days later. There definitely are plenty of Tucsons out there (Elites and Diesels).

Do factory cars comes fitted with towbar if a customer had asked for it? I thought the dealer does that from the spares they have.
The dealer wasnt willing to remove that so I ended up paying an extra $1200.

    • Dealer fits the towbar

You got a deal fall-over vehicle
