Model : Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Petrol Highlander
Booked on : 15 Mar 2023

So are you going to get the sunroof-less car?

    • +2

      No

      • +12

Yeah I wouldn't. Sunroofs are cool.

        • +14

I have a Santa Fe Highlander with the full glass roof.

I would have definitely opted out if ordering new.

          • +1

            @Mechz: is it hotter ?

            • +1

@dcep: No. Unless your sunroof doesn't have a shade.

            • +3

@dcep: Has a blockout shade but I do think it increases cabin temps.

Might have been more tolerable if the tint was 2% instead of 20.

              • @Mechz: Sorry, if the question is a bit foolish, but wouldnt the aircon pretty much nullify any negative effects of having a sunroof?

I absolutely love ours as its wonderful to drive with the sunroof and windows open on a nice cool day - esp on longer drives. The blockout shade is quite effective and the aircon takes care of the rest.

          • +10

@Mechz: Full glass roofs are a pain in the ar@e! I never ever used mine.My brother in law owned one(Santa Fe.) the vehicle was involved in a major accident, not his fault btw, he hated the sunroof & never used it.He is currently looking for a new vehicle, likes the Tuscon, but does not want a sunroof that unfortunately comes standard with the N-Line.

            • +14

@Hackney: I wish this fad of nearly every manufacturer putting full glass roofs in their cars would hurry up and die, especially when they don't even provide a shade/cover for it.

Driving a Tesla on a stinking hot day in summer isn’t much fun.

              • -5

                @tight-ass:

Driving a Tesla on a stinking hot day in summer isn’t much fun.

Why not open your sunroof and let some air in?

                • +9

@AustriaBargain: People don't go outside and sit in the sun on a stinking hot summer day, just so that they can get some air.

              • +6

@tight-ass: These panoramic sunroofs are fine in the Northern Hemisphere, but in a country as hot as it is in Australia they are not much use.I had a Qashqai Ti a few years back with the panoramic roof, you could not open it anyway, just far to hot with the blind pulled back.Useless things.

            • @Hackney: Sunroof is only in the Highlander option across the range.

        • +10

Every car that I have had with a sunroof it has barely been used. It is a cool novelty for the first full months but soon you forget that it even exists. Then in 10 years time when it starts to leak or when you have an accident you regret it

          • +5

@hydration station: Yeah, I deliberately went for the lower model so I would avoid the sun roof and pleather seats- why pay $5k extra to toast your head and glue you bum to the seat? Admittedly the sunroof on this model is just a cloth shade and does didly squat, my current car has a moonroof and a solid cover (that hasn't been opened in about a year, and that was only to let air in for the cat while I was in the servo). Current car doesn't get too hot from it, but I just don't use it. I can give a full account of every time I have opened it, including twice when it was opened by passengers. The seats are leather and the outside is lifting off the stuffing, so not really keen on a repeat.

          • +2

@hydration station: I don’t like sunroofs either, but opted to get one with our new car because the sports trim we wanted came with an all-black interior including a black headliner, which I hate even more. The sunroof with the shade open now makes the cabin feel a little less claustrophobic during day time. I really don’t understand why higher end sports trim levels are offered mostly with all black interiors.
But the other car we ordered a few years back had the option to choose a lighter interior with a lighter headliner, so didn’t order a sunroof.

          • @hydration station:

Then in 10 years time when it starts to leak or when you have an accident you regret it

I don't regret it, as someone who had an accident 10 years later after I bought a car with a sunroof. My current car also has a sunroof

          • +3

@hydration station: I have a 20 year old car with sunroof, mind you it's not a giant panoramic sunroof but just a normal one over front driver and passenger, it gets used almost everytime I'm driving as long as it's not raining and I'm not on 100km highway.
It brings some nice fresh air in and is much quieter than rolling down the window.
            I wouldn't drive a car without one.
It does not leak, does not creak and when the cover the closed you can barely get any noise from up there.

It's a Lexus if that makes any difference, maybe the quality is better?

      • I've a Genesis with full glass roof and a motorised roof shade that could be used to block light if needed. I absolutely love the glass roof it use it most of the time unless it's hot or too bright.

On the other hand the car also has a sunroof which I barely ever open.

    Model: BYD Atto 3 Extended
    Booked on: NOV 2022
Wait time: 4-6 months (taking delivery in a few days)

    • +11

Nice. Seeing heaps of these on the roads now. They look sweet on the outside, but I'm torn about the internal trim. Very weird.

      • +6

It’s one of those things that once you start driving it, it becomes just another car interior. In fact, when I get in other cars now, I find that their interiors feel horrible, cluttered and claustrophobic.

I will say though, the best thing I ever did was buy a carpet dash mat instead of looking at the fake dark blue leather dash.

        • +1

Sounds about right. We had a Hyundai Ioniq Electric 28kWh (before the Ioniq 5 and now 6 came out and made the old 28 and 38kWh models obsolete/discontinued), and loved the more traditional interior. Have a Tesla Model Y now and while most owners seem to rave about the minimalist interior, we still miss many of the steering wheel controls of the Ioniq, and various other features too. You really do just adapt to whatever. I'm sure I would have been mostly happy with the Atto 3 or even the ZS EV, but kids and all their junk just keep growing! So the storage in the boot, under boot, and in the front made the Y a bit of a no-brainer.

          • +2

@JownehFixIT: About to take a model Y on a road trip. 4.5 hours west of a capital city. Going to be interesting with minimal charging options! Hopefully the car is a good size inside for 3 adults and 2 children.

            • @serpserpserp: It's been good for us two plus 2 kids 5 and under. Just had 4 nights away at Sea World Resort, and a double seater pram, one large suitcase, three backpacks, and other random stuff all fit very nicely. FYI the battery efficiency we're getting is nowhere near the sticker's estimations. If you're relatively new to the car, I'd basically allow about 360km of range fully charged leaving features like Sentry Mode on because it eats battery when it is parked. Just use PlugShare (on Android or iOS) to track down chargers. You can filter by Type 2 plug type, and include or exclude specifically Tesla chargers or whatever you prefer. You'll usually find plugs around. You can use it on the web too so handy for planning ahead: https://www.plugshare.com/

              • +2

@JownehFixIT: Yeah my destination as a small town, staying in a motel. The town has one charger, so I sure hope it isn't broken when we get there or i'll have to door knock the town to use a normal power outlet lol

                • @serpserpserp: As long as you've got your mobile charge cable with you, that door knocking approach will at least be an option, haha! :)

        • Floor mats I understand but I never had a dash mat so just curious why it is nice to have - for aesthetics or to protect the dash from fading or cracking?

          • +1

@naruto128: Have one on a Kia. Mainly to protect but also covers the odd cable and less sunlight reflecting I guess.

      • +2

It really doesn't look as weird in person, the reviews up the gain and contrast and make it look…weird.

    • +1

Same, booked in November last year and taking delivery tomorrow. Now Rubbertree mat is running late.

    • Which group had a self-titled album in 1969: Yes

  • +5

I want to order a Rivian but it will probably be 2025 before they actually arrive here.

    • R1S?

      • Undecided. Probably the R1T.

    • Geez that is one ugly car.

      • +2

Ugly, and which end is the front?

        • -4

The inside looks nice though, but I'd be embarrassed driving around in one of those.

    • Such a cool car. This is the only EV that interests me at the moment

    • nice, but will never arrive like cybertruck :-)

  • Model: Lexus 350h
    Booked on: March
Wait time: told to be around 6 months. Build to order.

    • RX?

      • Yes

    • ordered nx 350h in may last year. was told 18 months at the time, dealer cannot say if that date will be met…

    • Only twice as a long to build than a Nick Scali couch, not too bad.

  • I was looking at a Sorrento PHEV, but the current responses have been either 18-24 months or the waiting list is closed.

  • Model: MG ZSEV
    Ordered: January 31st via NVL
Wait time: Quoted late March/early April, refined to early April when I called a few weeks ago, but was told "that's assuming the ports don't get worse". No word on delivery, but have signed the lease schedule for payments and dropped off my plates.

Victorian car deliveries are a mess because of customs atm.

    • Apparently a lot of them got sent back to China for cleaning.

      • I hadn't heard that. I just read that 91% of cars are found to be contaminated and sent off to be cleaned- in that case, why not clean em all, skip the first inspection steps, that's gotta knock some time off.

        • +1

Apparently too many to clean at the port and they all got sent back. Big problem everywhere as cars are sitting waiting for transportation and get dirty waiting for ships

      • Just been told mine is sitting in port waiting for quarantine to do it's thing

    • Victorian car deliveries are a mess because of customs atm.

It's not customs holding up car deliveries. It's biosecurity checks and cleaning.

      • I wonder how much that adds in costs to the car

        • most likely less than dealing with infestations and so on, well i imagine.

cant the ports find people to do the job?

          • +1

@juki: The ports have plenty of people…….but I wont say anymore as I'lll probably get negged on here lol

            • @Sammyboy: i did say people to do the job, so i think i catch your drift…

      • Sorry, meant quarantine- my bad

    2024 Mustang Dark Horse
    Ordered: October 2022
    Delivery: September-December 2023

    • 370kW RWD. What's your tyre budget like?
      .

      • +10

If you’re worried about how much tyres are going to cost on your car; I wouldn’t be looking to buy a brand new car

        • +7

          my last car was $400
          .

          • +2

@Nugs: Mine are about 500 per tyre, 19” Michelin pilot sport 4s :’)

      • Not as bad as ev!

    • Spoken to your dealer yet? As don't think any Mustangs are arriving this year

      • Not recently. Last update they gave me was in January. I’m expecting later rather than sooner. I’m not fussed to wait;

    • 2024 Mustang Dark Horse

They really f**ked the pooch with the exterior and interior styling, especially the dual screen cockpit; that looks hideous.

Nice to see the power output increase though.

      • Each to their own. I quite like how they've moved with the times and steered away from old style clunky dials and switches

        • Yeah wait until you start having to interact with those giant tablets just to change your A/C settings.

I quite like how they've moved with the times

That's an interesting way of saying cutting corners.

"Old style clunky dials and switches" are more expensive to manufacture, more reliable and easier to operate.
The entire point of sports cars is for the emphasis to be on the road and the driving experience, not to be sitting in front of a dual-screen setup like you're in the office, geeking out over excessive amounts of irrelevant data and customisation settings. In a so-called muscle car it's even more ridiculous having an interior like a Tesla.

Besides the full digital dash in the facelifted/refresh S550s was perfectly fine from a modernity and styling point of view.

Are you going with the optional carbon fibre rims?

          • +1

@Gnostikos: Everyone likes something different; I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying I just like a digital look. How often do you touch the aircon? I think I used my aircon a handful of times over this summer; and other than the radio (which just about every new car is a digital display now) I never liked the look of the old style switches. I'd say having a large screens and the software to handle everything would cost more than a few plastic knobs

Are you going with the optional carbon fibre rims?

No. I like the stock black rims

            • +2

              @Danstar:

I'd say having a large screens and the software to handle everything would cost more than a few plastic knobs

Physical switchgear in performance vehicles requires bespoke buttons/controls in a lot of cases along with a bespoke centre console mould, a lot of wiring, additional looms and sensors and then additional relays/switches to feed inputs back into the ECUs/CAN bus. The Mustang S550/S650 platform is not shared with any other Ford vehicles, so while some of the switchgear can be sourced from the vast Ford parts bin inventory, a lot of it can't due to the platform-unique interior.

A lot more R&D goes into switchgear than you think.

Those screens you find in most modern vehicles are basically the equivalent of $500 dollar tablets and with everything done in the firmware/software, it's an enormous cost-saving to manufacturers. If you're wondering why your infotainment system lags and freezes like almost all of them do, it's because they're powered by the sh*tty internals of a mid-range mobile phone or tablet.

Physical switchgear doesn't have input/response lag because it's interfacing directly with the CAN bus and ECUs, not intermediary infotainment firmware. There's also far less that can go wrong or break with physical switchgear.

Don't think for a moment that the transition to all-digital dashboards/interiors has been done for any other reason that cost savings to manufacturers.

Have you seen the glare/readability issues on some of those displays when you get light/reflections hitting them from a certain angle?
Most of them have ultra-glossy finishes for some stupid reason, attract smudges/scratches simply by people looking at them and make end-user repair/replacement impossible.

Good luck trying to buy an off-the-shelf head unit to replace those things when they inevitably die and you're out-of-warranty in the future, like you used to be able to do with cars up until quite recently. You don't even have a place to put an aftermarket head unit in most interiors anymore.

I won't get into the whole driver distraction debate but all-digital infotainment systems and capacitive touch controls are absolutely a danger for so many reasons.

No. I like the stock black rims

I'm curious as what those carbon rims cost over here as they've announced they're an $8000 extra in the US so I can only imagine over here we'd be paying well north of $10K for that privilege.

In any case, I would be amazed if you received your Dark Horse Mustang any time this year.

The last production run of MY 2022 S550 Mustangs experienced severe shortages and delays with only about 1,000 units delivered to Australia in 2022 from memory (in previous years it was in the range of several thousands of units) due to chip shortages and on top of that, shortages/delays with the Coyote V8 engine as well.

              • +1

@Gnostikos: Yeah those rims are too pricey for my liking. I’m on the list for both the dark horse and GT

The dealer was honest with me and told me just about every salesman has put their order in for a Dark Horse so hopefully they get a few and not a long wait; I’ve told them I’m happy to take a GT

Apparently ford is ahead of schedule

  • +1

this week I ordered a xtrail ti-l, due before eofy. FYI times are changing. I run a store that deals in australian made spas. We where out to 12 months wait period, now at 4-6 weeks. Its a different industry, but feel it shows a decline in wait times

    • BG's?

      FYI times are changing.

      That's only because people aren't buying Nissans…

Model: Toyota Corolla ZR petrol sedan
    Ordered: April 2022
Delivery: Never produced, so never delivered. Colour I ordered got discontinued end of August 2022. And rumours were swirling that a ZR hybrid sedan was going to be available.

Model: Toyota Corolla ZR hybrid sedan
    Ordered: November 2022
Delivery: January/February 2023, or still waiting for it (until 2025) if I didn't take the cancelled order for a different colour …

    • Oof, I'd be tempted to take the cancelled order (unless it's a dealbreaker colour). Toyota waits are nuts!

      • +2

Yeah I did. The deal-breaker colour would have been white. I ordered blue, changed to dark blue, ended up with silver (which when I think about it, is better in the long run)

        • What is wrong with white? My first Toyota was white

          • @[Deactivated]: It's boring as. My last car was red.

Edit: thanks for the neg kajke!

            • +5

@kerfuffle: Depends on the model though plus I didn't have a choice as it was a used car buy

              My current Toyota is red!

Edit: You're right - the ZR doesn't work in white

              Edit 2: I don't neg!

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: Please accept my apologies. You are right. I guess it's one of my haters. Or someone who has a white car.

And yes, the ZR definitely doesn't work in white. But also, I'm not copying my brother and getting a white car, even if it makes it (allegedly) easier to see at night.

Edit: Definitely a hater or someone who has a white car.

                • +2

@kerfuffle: Methinks the double whammy of a hater with a white car otherwise all of your posts would be negged

            • +5

@kerfuffle: A Corolla is a pretty boring car lol

              • -4

@Danstar: It's only boring if you drive it like a boring person 🙃

                • @kerfuffle: As a boring driver- I could probably drive a Ferrari and make it boring, so fair call

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: This is the main reason I don't want a white car, to be honest (or silver):

            https://imageresizer.static9.net.au/I1lAZG8aZDZ5e6jbv6IDzxDU…

That one poor red Camry, all alone. (my first car was also white)

            • @seannami: Same. It's why I originally ordered blue (that, and my first car was silver)

              • +1

@kerfuffle: Its amazing how much easier it is to find your car when you are the only non white/black/grey car in the mutideck!

  • Toyota Corolla Cross GXL 2WD Hybrid
    Paid deposit in June 2022
Dealer says they get advised at the end of the month about what's being made in the next month, then it's at least two months after that before it arrives. So, earliest possible delivery at this stage is July 2023, but it's not looking promising.

    • Toyota Corolla Cross Atmos 2WD Hybrid

      What motorcycle, pegaxs?

      • +3

Had my deposit in for a Savic C Series. Just missed out on being in build group 1.

Covid kicked in and put them way behind. Update was Feb this year, pushed back to June-July… it now looks like they are not going to start build group 1’s allocations until August-September.
