  • Question for the experts: is this a good razor to start with to see if I like safety razors? Or would I be better off buying something more expensive like a Merkur for a first razor?

    • +7

This is fine. The quality of the blade is far more important and these included blades are fantastic. When you run out of the included blades, you can find a lifetime supply of cheap Gilette Nacet blades imported from Russia on ebay which are also really good. This is a huge step up from cartridge razors

cheers arty. will report back to yell at you if I hate it

      • follow up question: should I buy Prosaro soap? and a brush? What's something good and economical for a newbie?

        • +2

Just use whatever you have already that you use for shaving currently. Spend on these things when you think you are happy with the results of DE shaving.

Jack The Barber Shaving Soap $7.50 (Normally $10) @ Woolworths. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/54940/jack…

They sometimes drop the price to $5 every few weeks, that's when you could stock up. I'm a relative newbie but seems good enough to me and the cheapest I can find.

          Shaving Brush $7.50 (Normally $10) https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/54915/jack…

Hey, I just got my first DE Razor like 5 weeks ago.

I purchased Prosaro soap, seems good. I got the Sandalwood one, its a bit spicy on my face (I consider myself somebody without sensitive skin) - next time I would purchase the Greentea & Oatmeal.
I purchased a Synthetic brush from Beard & Blade (their own branded one) - feel a bit put off using real animal fur. The brush is fine? I guess. It does what I need it to do. Unsure how I could justify spending more than 20-40 on a brush.
Lots of sites sell multipacks of Razors where you can try out different brands and find out what you like, I'd suggest doing this too.
I also purchased a Prosaro moisturizer balm (the Greentea one) for after, and an Alum Block.

I purchased a 2-in-1 stand for the brush and razor from Amazon - QShave I think it was called.

          • +1

@Cludo: Or if you want to try out the blade slowly, shaver shop has plenty of 5 blades pack selections.

        • If you want the full experience, yes proraso and a brush. I have the king gilette brush actually, and green proraso. Best though is the green proraso after shave. Even with rip off triple razor stuff, that green after shave is so good.

        • For the cheap stuff Nivea sensitive shaving cream in a tube. You used to be able to get it for around $2 on Amazon. Now it's around $3. Nice rich creamy lather, pretty close to Taylor of old bond st.

        • +2

A mate of mine who dances for a living told me to use hair conditioner. Honestly was better for me, no burns or ingrown. Very slick

        • I don't think it's necessary and just use body wash.
But you don't really know what you like until you try different techniques for yourself.

        • IMO this is the best value - https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/30583/sano… - it's way better than it has any right to be for the price

      • So this would be better than Gillette Blue 3 for everyday shaving?

(Yes, I'm showing my ignorance here)

    • +2

I started on this last year and it's been fine. Haven't felt the need to upgrade.

I would suggest a sampler pack of different blades. Everyone has different preferences so some work better than others.

    • I bought one of those Beard & Blade sets a couple years ago and haven't upgraded myself.
Just got a bunch of blades from amazon after I finished the different sample packs that B&B included, 100 blades were ~$17 on Amazon.

All it does is flex the blade. You can't really go wrong. We've been making these things for a hundreds of years, we got the angle down pat.

    • I recently got this as my first DESR. Pretty happy with it, easy to use, great finish, I just use the regular foam I was using (in the shower). Glad I moved over.

    • I would recommend a Chinese butterfly mechanism myself. Yintal, Weishi, Baili, QShave. These are all $15-$20 razors which are still the everyman's razor in Asia where the multiblade marketing never took over.

They are mild, properly made for practicality (no silly slippery handle like the Gillette) and the butterfly mechanism is a lot nicer than screwing around with 3 piece handle. Nice and easy to quickly open up for an unclog if needed.

Dealing with the finger slasher twist is something which puts people off the old DE razor, why give a beginner that issue as their first when a butterfly solves it?

      • Too late, already bought the Gillette. Don’t love the twist mechanism, will upgrade to a butterfly mechanism handle if I decide to stick with DE

Still years later, will not buy Gillette.

Buy this razor and then a lifetime supply of blades made by a different brand. That's what I've done. They will never make another penny out of me.

Still years later, will not buy Gillette.

      Why not?

Better question - "who gives a shit"?

          That's actually a worse question.
If you don't give a shit then ignore it and move on. The fact that you took the time to comment tells us you give some level of shit, while at the same time trying to say that you don't…

Probably having a sook over some woke shit…….

        • I'm still crying :..(

    • +7

Same here. Vote with your wallet, it's the only way they learn.

      • +4

lmao, I severely doubt Procter & Gamble are hurting in any meaningful way because a vocal minority are still crying about a supposedly “woke” ad from a few years ago

        • Obviously it was never going to send them broke, way too many normies who just don't care about all the BS untill it affects them directly (then they whinge about how it got this bad).

However it did cost them a few billion $, which appeared to be enough to stop them doubling down on the woke BS. More than happy to never buy another P&g product.

        • +2

I severely doubt Procter & Gamble are hurting..

If enough people feel the same way they will. This is precisely how voting works in case you didn't know…

Good razor, I purchased last time it was on offer. Can anyone recommend any good blades?

    • +2

Everyone is different, so difficult to recommend. However in my opinion……
For a sharp blade, Feather, for a smooth but still sharp, Astra or Nacet.

Buy a sample pack from VSHOD
      http://www.vshod.com/products/razor-blades.html
      Or
      Razor Blades Club

      • +2

If your blades don't have Russian writing on the pack, you're paying too much.

        • +1

Astra & Nacet are made in St Petersburg, Russia, branded by Gillette, owned by Proctor & Gamble. All the blades coming out of this factory are excellent.
There is also another Russian manufacturer, Mostochlegmash in Moscow, who also make very good, but not excellent blades.

Feather is made in Japan, cost a little more than the Russian blades, but are sharper and last longer

Blades from China, Egypt, Vietnam & India are crap. Blades from Germany are ok, but overpriced.

          IMHO.

    • +1

I've got course, thick facial hair and sensitive skin. Found Astras, Derbys and Asco pretty good. Feather blades were way too aggressive for my skin though. Best bet is get a multi pack and try a few to see what suits you best

    • +1

Fwiw I went straight to bulk purchase of GSB (Gillette silver blue) blades as they were recommended as being pretty close to the included ones. Been going great for over a year now, but can’t guarantee you’ll fine it the same.

    • +1

Get one of the mixed collections online. They are quite different and a lot of personal taste involved.

    • +1

I use Astra, I found Feather too sharp and Shark too dull

Think I paid like $12 for 50.. And I've used about 15 in 3 years. Using it for head and cleaning up beard.

  • Does any one know how long this blade last for?

I remember my dad used to use this blade on both sides then flip it over and use again on both sides :)

    • +1

Depends on both the person and the blade.
Generally speaking, anywhere between one and five shaves.

    • +1

As mentioned, a lot of variables. I even found out that different climates can impact the life of a blade. My blades last about a month before I start noticing the drag of the blunt razor. I have to shave everyday.

    • Totally subjective, depends on your hair, your soap, your storage. And just feel for when you want to replace.

Doesn't really matter, good blades are 5c each in bulk online so cost isn't much of a factor.
Supermarkets massively inflate the price so they don't make the multiblade gimmicks look bad, but they are cheap.
I recommend a sample pack of 10 different packs, blades do have unique feel so it's an adventure trying them all and looking for preference.

You don't really use one side at a time, you spin it after a couple of swipes when it clogs up, to double the time needed between rinse offs.

  • Are these any good for clean shave ?

  • -3

For a couple dollars more I'd recommend one of these bad boys: https://timelessrazor.com/shop

    • Couple of dollars? Cheapest I see is $75

      • -4

Just joking but they are very nice. I've had mine for a few years. Keep in mind its USD too.

    • Haha timeless is for the real enthusiasts.

  • +2

    Need a deal on cutthroats

  • My opinion is that I think this is a fantastic razor to start a DE shaving journey because it is so cheap and also quite mild.

If you don't shave that frequently and grow out something quite decent and thick in-between shaves I don't think you will get very far with this one unless you hit it with a trimmer first. If this is you, see below.

My recommendation if you want to invest in just one DE and keep it for your life, go for the Rockwell 6C. The 6S is stainless steel but the 6C will still last your lifetime (and is much cheaper) and the chrome finish on the 6C gives for a very smooth/slick glide on the skin. The 6 different settings (via 3 plates) means you can test different levels of "aggressiveness" and see what works for you and what you like.

    • I'm a relative new DE convert and agree this handle is quite mild. I'm interested in something more aggressive and will look at your suggestions. Thanks!

  • +2

    sharp enough for pubic hair?

    • Yes, sharp enough for pubic hair and even the jewels.

  • +1

did price go back up ?

These woke warriors deserve to go broke. None of my family will ever buy this product under our roof.

  • +7

Purely observation, not putting an option out, but kinda interesting there are dozens of comments detailing people boycotting Gillette blades over the ‘woke’ thing but not a mention of boycotting them due to being made in Russia that is actively at war with Ukraine and has resulted in countless innocent casualties.

I find it odd where people draw the line sometimes.

    • +1

Huh yeah this is an interesting observation actually, thanks for pointing it out. Its weird because there's quite a few brands that make DE blades in Russia, I have always wondered why Russia.
Edit: Just looked it up, apparently they're mostly companies bought out by Gillette and then moved to Russia.

    • +1

I was scrolling down and was wondering the same….I never seen or heard of the woke thing, but it must be a terrible thing when it causes more stress/upset than what is going on the Ukraine
