Replacing MacBook Pro Screen

After only 6 months, my 14-inch M1 MacBook Pro has met its match (i.e. a certain pet chomped down on a certain screen) and the display is kaput due to a tiny puncture in the corner.

Apple have quoted $1269, which is half of the price of the laptop ☠️

I'm wondering if I should:
(a) Get some quotes from third parties
(b) Buy a new laptop and use my current one with an external monitor and replace the screen in the future when it becomes cheaper (I presume it would?) and sell it
(c) Cop the $1269 with Apple

TIA

  • (a)

  • (d) sell as parts on marketplace and start again

  • Review the iFixit guide and see how you feel about difficulty=moderate, this will help you choose a pathway

Use it in vision impaired assist mode.

    e) Insurance claim? Your Home and Contents policy may cover accidental damage.

    D) sell the pet

  • Should have got Apple Care, or better yet make sure your home contents insurance covers thing like this. Contents insurance usually cover you if your stuff gets stolen from your car too, works out to be better value than Apple Care if you don't need Apple Care's extra tech support (which I wish my mom would get instead of calling me asking how to do anything).

    • You should have suggested this before the dog took a bite of the screen.

  • By the time the screen is cheaper the computer won’t be worth repairing, and would you really use it with an external monitor?

Get a quote from a 3rd party, they may not be much different in price though.

Best to try and see if you can claim on contents insurance (if your cover has accidental damage cover). But if not, just get it fixed, it’s a new laptop.

Just a thought, how much is a replacement refurbished one from Apple?

  • I had a similar issue and decided to go with C. New laptop would cost more, unless it's not an macbook pro. Third party quotes were even more expensive than apple. I don't regret it. But insurance claim sounds tempting too :)

  • Turn it into a server for HA and the like. Use it closed, via sshd, and get a new one.

  • You can also plug in an iPad and use it as a screen. Classy.

  • Thanks everyone. I will be replacing the screen with a third party which is a few hundred cheaper than Apple. And cat has been disowned, saving some extra $$
