Telstra/Boost Recent Plan Price Increases

So with Telstra and Boost upping the pricing on their plans, and Boost introducing speed caps a while back, what options are there if you still need to rely on Telstra's coverage as the other carriers coverage still don't match in regional areas?

  • Just received the email too. While being on Telstra is something I appreciate, just wondering whether there is a cheaper option with international calling.

  • The Telstra sub brand Belong has been putting their prices up and removing low spend plans. Note it only uses the wholesale network coverage.

    • I think Belong will increase its $25, $35, $45 plans by $4 later, aligning to the $19 plan (was $15) that is effective this month.

  • Bleedin heck, is this the CPI increase they keep talking about? Surely they can't increase if you're already on a plan with handset repayments, even if the mobile plan is month to month you're still got a agreement to pay off the phone over two or three years?

    • The service plan is month to month. They reserve the right to change price or inclusions with 30 days notice. The only contract you have is the repayment of your device. If you decide to leave or cancel the service for whatever reason, you have to pay out the remainder of the device in full. Check their critical information summaries if you're not sure.

      • I guess I should pray they don't alter the deal further. I don't see how CPI changes their cost of powering the cell towers in my area though…

And I just noticed that their cheapest plan now caps speeds at 250Mbps, wtf?!

      • neg'd because of what? Am I wrong?

    • More like them wanting to increase their ARPU

I haven't received an SMS but Googled and found this for Boost: https://news.boost.com.au/plan-updates/

      And Telstra Prepaid: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/pla…

  • My Telstra Pre Pay goes up 17% in July.

  • Any examples of these price changes?

    • My prepay went from $30 to $35. No biggie as I need the Telstra service area.

    • Boost changes

For me the $200 is now $230 (it was $150 a while back). Recently I paid $160 after $20 cash back. And 6 months earlier paid $135 after cash back. Those days are long gone I guess. Might move to Woolies…

      • Woolies are upping their own prices on 24 April

        • Likely to still be better value especially with the 10% off one/two shops per month.

Fortunately I’ve got until April 2024 to decide.

Kinda ridiculous it’s gone from $150 - $200 - $230 now. I barely use any data so it’s more just the coverage to me. Will stay another year recharge as need to full Telstra retail coverage for where I live but will be moving soon and will then just go to a Telstra Wholesale provider once I do.

Seems a crazy increase in price in not that long a period of time.

Disgusting price gouging from Boost/Telstra and a sign of all-too-common corporate greed. $230 for a 130GB plan… seriously? I'm absolutely going to reconsider my plan after I run out of SIMs.

    • I think 160GB now though

You're right. Still, that's where $150 plans should be imo, and this is a plan that was $150 not long ago. I paid $142 for my current Boost SIM with 140GB data.

If you already shop at Woolworths their $170/year plan (just increased from $150) can be good value and gives you Telstra wholesale network access.

With 10% off twice monthly (once online and then once in store) you'll recoup the cost of the plan if you are spending $71 or more per shop.

    • How can you get 10% off twice? I thought only once per month?

  • Where is everyone going to that require international calls?

Woolworths & Vodafone don't offer international calls on their offers.

  • On Boost but thinking of switching to Woolworths now. What’s the difference in network coverage between the two in reality?

    • Rural areas have less coverage. Check out the maps for retail v wholesale.

  • If I already have a Boost $200 voucher that I haven't activated, does that mean that I have to pay more when I activate?
If I activate before 4 July do I get something that I wouldn't get if I activate after the 4 July price rise?

    • Same question as me haha

NOTE POST 4th July 2023 - Boost recharge vouchers still available in denominations of $150, $200 & $300 from Newsagents & Convenience stores, presumably all for 12 month validity.
