Just got an email from derrimut gym. It's a decent deal for 1 year. If you have one near you then not a bad time to sign up. Not sure if it's Victoria only. No lock in contracts

$299 plus $59 admin fee. Would there be any payment surcharge or payment surcharge admin fee? I really don’t know. It’s a surprise worth having.

  • Any comments on how busy they are now? I've heard the Thomastown location is crazy most of the time.

    • Braybrook is crazy all day.

Adelaide ones are terrible. No parks, block traffic, park illegally. And thats before youve walked in.

      • -4

        No parks,

Good. Stop driving to the gym.

  • This the lambo guys gym?

    • That maybe kahma i think.

  • +1

    Call me when it's 199 + 49 admin fee

    • +1

      2010 called

    • +1

Not including the admin fee its already $5.75pw… that's like 1 coffee.

      • But I need 1 coffee pd not 1 pw

        • Well that's kinda my point… this gym membership is already way cheaper than most people's coffee habits lol

Yet they still want it cheaper

How come all their gyms are in the poor suburbs?

    • +3

Larger/cheaper industrial real estate in these suburbs I’d imagine, for starters.

      • +1

Yep… that just about describes everywhere in adelaide

Now if they just opened in Sydney, they'd have the best gym here

    • +1

Yea, Norwood SA tops my list of poor suburbs /s

I've been a member nearly 3 years and have no complaints. By far the cheapest gym and Windsor Gardens is possibly the biggest gym in SA, always packed but you don't have to wait long to use equipment.
My only knock is the obnoxiously loud music they sometimes play lol

    • Shame to hear it's always packed (do you only go at peak or other times too?) also what's it like in terms of people re-racking weights/tidiness/cleanliness/etc. current gym is driving me nuts with people leaving weights/gear just lying around. It's reached the point where people just drop dumbells on the floor near the benches a whole meter away from the rack…

      • +2

I go there at various times of the day and it's usually busy no matter when. There's 20+ squat racks if thats what you're into.
When I go after work at 5:30 the only thing I ever had to wait for was cables to do flys.
If you use machines, there must be about 15 different machines for each muscle group. If my favourite is in use I'll try out another one.

People putting weights away is hit and miss, no real different to anytime fitness. People seem incapable of putting dumbbells back in the right spot on the rack though, that does annoy me a bit.

All derrimuts have a seperate women's gym inside. The few times somebody has left the door open I've seen nobody in there, so that's a plus if you're a woman.

Benoffie's comment about the parking is true, I sometimes have to park on the street or at bunnings and walk a whole 2 mins to the gym lol

I'm a tight ass, maybe that's why I'm painting Derrimuts in such a positive light, I think it's fantastic value.

        • The SA Melrose Park one does not have a separate female gym. Nearly always packed and always blasting music though. Stopped going due to the music volume.

          • @BargainDoubter: Ahh, I should have said I was mostly talking about Windsor Gardens. I've been to Norwood, City, Gepps Cross which I think all had the women's gym.
Ahh actually Welland doesn't, and that gym is tiny, I hate going to that one but it's close to my workplace.

        • "All derrimuts have a seperate women's gym inside. The few times somebody has left the door open I've seen nobody in there, so that's a plus if you're a woman." Sweet, one of the days I'm glad to be a woman (minus how hard it is to put on muscle and the monthly blood loss..)

    • +1

Manage to park there or resort to Bunnings/Salvos/KFC? 🙄

    • So when is it least busy?

  • +1

Most of the locations in Melbourne West are crazy busy all day long. However they're the cheapest gym so far (when there is promotion like this). I tried Snap and Anytime Fitness but they're more expensive and equipments not as good.

  • Great deal

  • You pay what you get..

    Admin fee is a scam

    • +2

I have worked in gyms for half of my life, from reception, to sales, PT, management, and yes, it is 100% a scam.

A lot of commercial gyms these days sadly are run by a group of shareholders or equity firms trying to squeeze the most profit through pointless revenue lines, which flows into incentivised commissionable lines for their middle and upper managers.

Admin/joining fee is one of them. It is cringe watching them trying to collect as much revenue as they can through meaningless 'service' fees, while most people are clueless to what's actually going on.

Always fight this fee. They can often waive it.

      • +1

If anyone has managed to get the admin fee waived from this gym please let us know

      • +1

The only thing Derrimut will waive is you Goodbye

  • Anyone know how busy Derrimut gets at night?

  • +1

I was attracted by the price, then I visited the closest branch, Frankston Vic.
I walked out in less than 2 minutes.
Machines are basically touching each other and it was so busy, that you work out while rubbing against someone else.

They said this is "the quiet time" so busy time means you are in queue waiting for a machine.

    • Yeah I'll have to visit the one near me fingers crossed it's alright

  • One location in Brisbane in some shit suburbs miles from the city. Shame, looks like a good deal.

  • $59 admin.
how do they justify that price

    • +1

Relatively standard/on the cheap side tbf, for reference many gyms have a $70-100 joining fee and another $70-100 fob/key fee (Deri is staffed 24/7 so no fob fees)
The joining fee is likely in part to cover the costs of setting up the (somewhat predatory) direct debits through the 3rd party billers they use.
How they justify the fob fees is the real mystery they cost a couple dollars/ea at most so they sell em at a ~40x mark up.
      FWIW:
Jetts - $89 joining fee, $79 fob fee
AF - $99 joining fee, $79.95 fob fee
Goodlife - $89 joining fee, etc.

      • actually i was being sarcastic.
these admin fees were set up simoly to make the overall price look cheaper.
maybe theyre not used exactky like that now, but still… a lot of money to do admin.
