Idk I’ve kinda just accepted it

    • +1

Yup I went off it for a couple of months and there's really no difference now after using it for 2 years.

  • +2

Surely this stuff doesn't work, when the alternatives are $15K, or a shady expedition to Turkiye?

    • +1

It works but results do vary for each person. However you will see an improvement.

But it requires a combination of exercise, diet, supplements, good rest and a derma roller too.

And you need to do it at the early stages.

      • It’s worked well for me, after 6-9 months the “patch” is almost not visible.

I take saw palmetto supplements from Amazon US too.

        • Did you have to use a derma roller as well?

        • Is the hair regrowth permanent? Do you have to keep using it indefinitely?

          • @Bargain Fighter: Yes you need to keep using it

            • @Commodore64: If you don't keep using it falls back out again?

              • @nightelves: Yes. Few ways to approach it:
                1. Don’t. Just accept hair loss or get a hair transplant.
                2. Accept using it for the rest of your life.
                3. Believe a pharmaceutical or gene therapy solution will be developed within 5 years so this is a stop-gap.
                4. Use this as a less intrusive version of the pill to test if it works, then switch to the pill version.

I got a scalp applicator and is so much easier to apply evenly and regularly without making my hair look greasy.

                • +3

@truemana: Mind sharing what sort of scalp applicator you used?

                  • +2

@Surrealblank: Hey, sorry I didn’t get the notification. Here’s the one. The top screws off - I ended up keeping it off and applying without it as otherwise it seems like the minoxidil won’t flow out due to a slight vacuum created when you’re applying. I really like it as it’s way less messy, goes straight to my scalp and I can put it on before I do my hair for work in the morning.

                    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/314501930060?hash=item4939c69c4c…

                    • @truemana: @truemana Can it be used for the Foam Regain in this deal or only for the Serum version?

                      • @Bargain Fighter: Probably only the liquid version. The foam wouldn’t flow down at all. Luckily the liquid version is way cheaper ($50 for 6 months).

                        • @truemana: So you add 1-2ml of liquid Minoxidil in the scalp applicator every time without screwing on the cap.

Can you fill up the applicator to use multiple times before refill it again? (Not sure if it will dry out)

                          • +1

@Bargain Fighter: I add 1ml into the applicator side and leave the “measuring” top unscrewed so it flows out easier and doesn’t create a small vacuum. I do that every time.

If you fill it up to the top with eg 5ml and keep the cap on, you have to check how much you’ve used every 15 sec or so. It definitely dries out and crystallises etc.

    • Thailand is the place to go for HT, about $2.60 per graft

      • How many grafts do you need?

        • Depends how much hair you have lost and needing replacement.

could vary from hundreds to thousands

        • -1

          Only 6 billion.

        • I don't need any yet, maybe in 5-10yrs i'll need 2000-3000

    • Minoxidil (the key ingredient) is actually a blood pressure medication with a well recorded side effect of excessive hair loss. It and finasteride are basically the only two legit medications in a sea of snake oil.

    • Why “shady” expedition to Türkiye?
      https://medtour.help/medical-tourism-in-turkey-popular-desti…
      Seems everything but shady.

      • Lots of 'hair mills' in Turkey, need to do your research on Reddit

  • +2

I'd suggest just buying some Minoxidil from eBay. I've been using that for years and has worked better for me than Regaine ever did (and much cheaper)

    • this is about as cheap as it gets for the foam. the liquid minoxidil causes irritation for a lot of people due to the propylene glycol (which the foam does not contain)

    • -2

What are the negative effects of minoxidil?
      Side Effects

      Acne at site of application.
      burning of scalp.
      facial hair growth.
      increased hair loss.
inflammation or soreness at root of hair.
      reddened skin.
      swelling of face.

      Yeah Nah…

      • I guess you don't know then what the active ingredient is in Regaine?

Spoiler alert - its Minoxidil. Ie. What I'm saying is you can get the same stuff (albeit it in liquid vs foam form) on eBay cheaper.

Also, having used Minoxidil about 7 years now, I've had none of that.

        • I find the liquid makes hair feel quite ordinary. I switched to foam as a result.

          • @frogger081: Interesting! I guess its personal preference because I tried the foam initially, then switched to the liquid and I like the feeling it gives the hair once it dries. It feels to me a bit thicker and its a bit more 'moldable' without needing product. All subjective I guess!

      • +1

You do realise minoxidil is the primary ingredient in regaine as well?

      • +2

None of that happened for me.

      • Sore balls is also common.

I could only stand it for a day or two… not worth it.

I definitely wouldn't buy 4 months supply unless you have tried it first.

        • Applies to any products.

Test first and if it doesnt suit then stop using it.

          Everyone reacts differently.

      • Try it for a couple months. There’s an explanation to each of those side effects. I’ve had most of them.

        • acne was irregular and mild
        • burning lasted maybe 3 weeks at the beginning
        • dunno about facial hair
        • hair loss is initial and well-explained as a part of the hair growth phase and the operating mechanism of the drug.
        • my scalp is slightly sore or inflamed when I apply it? Dunno, it’s barely noticeable
        • didn’t get facial swelling

Anyway, they’re all temporary. Buy the 6 month generic version on eBay for $50. If you don’t like it, stop using it. You’re no worse off than now except $50.

    Just shave it off people.

    • +21

Which people? Do you just glue it on afterwards?

  • What's the consensus? This or finesteride and Minoxidil saw palmetto biotin

    • Minoxidil makes the hair thicker, finasteride stops the hair from falling out.

      • What makes it grow?

        • +1

          hopes and prayers

        • Minoxidil makes it grow thicker.
It it's already fallen out it may be too late.
Ideally you want to start finasteride soon as you notice it starting to thin.
I had some regrowth with minoxidil when I was mid twenties, stopped for a few years during COVID and now it's not having the same regrowth only making what's left thicker. I shouldn't have started finasteride when I first started minoxidil.

    • Finesteride definitely helped with my hair gain - give it a go. Took about 6 months for it to be noticeable for me, but my hair is generally very thin and harder to notice. Been on it for more than 12 months now, have not notice any side effects.

I've also been using Regaine (for more than 2 years now), to be honest I'm not sure if it's doing much…

      • is your finasteride dose 1.25mg daily, or higher?

  • Not from Amazon, couldn't return it if didn't work.

  • +3

They say you grow hair, look a like Stalin.

    • +2

      Seinfeld early season, nice.

  • if you want minoxidil cheap get it from epharmacy type websites though its a generic brand same stuff alot cheaper i actually found it on ozbargain doing a search. i think i payed $55-60 for two 120ml bottles

im currently on minoxidil and finesteride combo

finesteride you get from a doctors prescription. cost about $20 a month for 1mg tablets, your doctor can however prescribe them in 5mg($35/m) so you can cut them up into quarters for cheaper

    • I want to try finasteride but I'm concerned about my T levels dropping, did you get your T levels checked before and after?

      • no i didin't however the most commmon side effect is a hit to your libido, i didin't experience any though.

finesteride blocks the conversion from testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) so i think it actually increases T-levels

        • OMG, 7 days on finasteride 0.5mg/day, first time in my life I've had equipment malfunction - so embarrassing. Not sure where to from here, I did ask my GP about having my DHT levels tested before starting but apparently only the royal Melbourne children's hospital does DHT testing so we figured it was pointless post puberty to test. Maybe I'll ask to get a new hormone panel to see if there's anything else besides DHT that's gone to crap.

found the link $58 for 6 month worth which is 2x180ml bottles https://pharmacysavings.com.au/products/minoxidil-extra-stre…

      • This is 240ml.

  • Has anyone been able to buy oral Minoxidil in Oz? I can't find it here but in Thailand you can buy 100x 5mg tabs for $9

    • following

    • pilot etc offer it, though it's probably around $29 or so for a months supply.

      • Pilot only sell 10mg capsules so you need to open them up and split into 4x doses

    • Yep. I just go to my GP for a script and a compounding pharmacy makes it.

      • How much did you pay? My local compounding pharmacy only do capsules, not tabs, so if you want 2.5mg caps they want about $1.50 per dose

        • Aud 55 for 100 capsules with 1mg per capsule. Private health insurance covers the difference above aud 30 for me. 1mg should be more than enough and has been for me. I actually dropped it to 0.5mg recently.

          • @mhecker: Theres risk with oral, if you look into it. I dont think it's worth the risks, but thats me and alot of people on reddit feel the same way.

            Off course, it works better.

          • @mhecker: All I could find on chemist warehouse was 100x 10mg?

            • @reactor-au: Yeah hence it is compounded and the dosage is really small compared to what's on offer via a normal chemist.Normal chemists don't see that (e.g. Chemist Warehouse is not a Compounding chemist)

              • @mhecker: Please share your experience, did you use topical minoxidil before that , are you on finasteride also etc

                • +1

@reactor-au: I have never tried the topical one as I'm a cat owner and it's toxic to them. I tried combining oral Minoxidil and Finasteride but that had quite some side effects. Sticking with low dose Minoxidil 0.5mg per day which has stopped the loss. Am happy for now.

                  • +1

                    @mhecker: I'm a cat owner, and I just washed my hands 5x.

Unless you plan to leave the bottle somewhere where your cats going to drink it, and I'm pretty confident the cats aren't interested in it.

My cat has a bad habit of biting my ear, or laying on my head to wake me up in the morning and I did get super concerned.

I imagine after 5-6 hours, it's dry. I mean he could lick my hair, and it could affect him but it hasn't.

Not much I can do about that unfortunately, he likes sleeping on my bed. It's been fine for the last 8 months.

I think it's more dangerous if they lick, or drink it directly. I don't know, I only use it before bed and even I try not to pay them tho I've washed my hands alot.

I thought about oral, it's more effective but dangerous heart sides I read.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Fair call and helpful comments from everyone. Hadn't really looked into these side effects and my GP had little knowledge about this product. Might reconsider. Thanks guys.

                      • @mhecker: Yeah my GP is useless.

Definitely, look into it and double check.

I think if it's low dose, might be okay.

                        Check Reddit.

What I would love to know is, what is the story with Elon Musks hair? Is it a transplant or what?

If you haven’t, watch his interview from PayPal days, he was clearly going bold.

  • Is this any good?

  • -3

men seem obsessed with stopping hair loss in current year. never has there been any other time in history when men cared so much about this. i guess selfies will do that to a person.

    • +6

Nothing wrong in caring about how you look, especially if you're young, trying to meet women until they see your hair loss. Not everyone is comfortable with "just shaving it off". Im glad that there are options now for this situation that there weren't a couple of decades ago. That's all it is - options.

  • +1

Warning: Minoxidil (the active ingredient in this) is extremely toxic to cats, and very toxic to dogs. Even a droplet can be deadly, and exposure to shared surfaces (such as sheets and pillowcases) can pose a risk.

    • This is probably why my dog loves licking my pillow, I'll have to put a stop to this

  • Anyone know when the sale ends?

    • They usually last anywhere from 1-2 weeks

    • +1

Price tag in store say ends 14/05/23

  • I have 2 words relies to people who are trying to grow their hair back…..

    “ Jeff Bezos “

    • Two words for you -

      Elon Musk

      • No, if anyone could grow hair back it would be him

  • Why does it say expired? It still works and I think the Catalog is going til the 14/05 from what they told me.
