Hi Ozbargainers,

Well what a week for community pharmacy. For those who skipped a days news, the pharmacy news of the week is that the Federal Labor Government has announced that 60 day dispensing will commence on the 1st of September. Without exaggeration (and supply, ethical, moral debates aside) this will lead to the closure of many smaller pharmacies (or our PBS registrations will be bought out by the big box stores). In short, concession holders will only pay for one month of supply and receive two and the government will only pay dispensing fees to pharmacies once on two months supply of medications. So in summary, concession holders win (great), the tax payer saves money (probably a good thing), but community pharmacy have to effectively hold double the amount of stock and get half the income, sure the work will be less, but there will also be less foot traffic and there isn't an unlimited supply of clients.

For your big box pharmacy who generate 2/3rds of their revenue from retail sales of perfumes, shampoo etc, probably not such a big issue, for pharmacies in wealthier areas where few clients are concession holders, maybe slightly more of an issue - for regional pharmacies and those in the outer burbs (like us) who rely on the $5 per script fee from the pensioners plus the $4 the government pays us to dispense it, potentially a death blow. My back of the envelope calculations predict we're going to lose money every day we open from September 1 unless we have a serious pivot (I haven't worked out what that is yet, but either we pivot or go broke).

You know the industry is really in trouble when the industry's national figurehead gets on TV and starts crying. https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/pharmacy-lobby-presi…

Anyway - I understand folks are here for a bargain and not a wo-ers me story, I keep getting emails asking for more Nasal Spray deals, the issue has been (and still is) two of the major generic suppliers in Oz are long term OOS and the 1 or 2 other generic suppliers have hiked pricing to take advantage of the supply issues in the market. Maybe luckily or unluckily Dr Reddy's have asked to me help clear out the balance of 2023 dated Lorazol 50's - so I've been able to bundle somewhat overpriced Nasal Spray with Bargain priced Lorazol to offer a very good overall balanced deal tonight.

Since this item ships in a satchel with plenty of spare space, I've provided some add in items at reduced prices if anyone is interested (select from the drop down menu on the item page). Please select free envelope shipping at checkout - this item will ship as a satchel with tracking for all Ozbargainers.

I haven't started crying yet - at the end of the day, things change - businesses have to change and adapt to the cards they are dealt. It will be interesting to see if everything else in pharmacy has to rise in price to compensate for this dramatic loss of revenue. Things like free webster packing, free delivery for oldies with no vehicle, store credit for those that can't pay until payday, blood pressure checks etc etc will all have to turn into a fee for service.

Don’t be an idiot. This stuff isn’t simple.

Yes, people save money which is a good thing, but there are costs. One is that we’re going to end up with big Amazon style retailers.

You might think that’s not a big deal, but the human element in society is important. Like having GPs to talk to and not just Telehealth, or why we have psychologists and don’t just tell people to read a book to get over their issues.

The new measure probably had to be done, but it is still a big deal. Not everything is black and white.

I'm a big fan of local retail, but if the government and pensioners can save a bit of money, I'm not clear why pharmacies should get treated differently to every other shop we've watched close down in the main street.

I'd really like to see policies put in place to assist local retail and assist them compete with global companies, but maintaining less efficient ways of doing things as a handout to cost and inconvenience people isn't a great way to achieve this.

        • What’s scary is that local business will always be less efficient than mega corporations.

Which is why the single pursuit of saving money might not always be the best thing…

Imagine during COVID with lockdowns if only big companies survived. Every Main Street would be full of McDonald’s and starbucks, etc. no local coffee shop or cafe.

I’m not saying one way or the other. All I’m saying is that we have to be better than pushing to save money, no matter the cost. We might as well just all give our lives to Amazon then. Which is where it all might be heading…

Fair call but keep in mind the majority of subsidy in pharmacy doesn't actually go to the pharmacist who gets $4 to hand over a box, its the $30-50-200-1000 subsidy the government pays to the drug companies (those globals you mention) to allow the concession card holder to buy their meds for $5.60 per month (or soon per 2 months). This bloke articulates the issues better than I can: https://www.facebook.com/twinwaterspharmacy/videos/132125756…

  • Why is there a banner on top of your website re delays in postage cause of COVID?

Can you pose the same question to Australia Post? Every time a client complains their item is slow to be delivered or late, I contact Australia Post = they blame covid (yes really)

We post daily, the rest is up to Australia Post (and Covid apparently) https://auspost.com.au/service-updates/current-covid-19-impa…

  • Counter: The government policy is going to be most meaningful to those who suffer from afflictions that require medications over the rest of their lives. It is a change that is targeted directly to support vulnerable people, folks who are legible for concessions.

    • No issues with concession cards holders saving money and paying less, the issue is the government aren't the one's supporting those in need by providing the savings - the government is taking from private businesses, who in the main part aren't straight up businesses (as in pharmacies are also service providers funded by the Federal Government) and then giving only a portion of what is taken from the pharmacies back to the aussie battlers.

On the surface its actually a move of political wizardry; every day battlers win, it costs the government nothing (actually saves the Government a few billion), helps unclog GP's, those rich whiney pharmacy owners get a little less (the average Labor voter doesn't give a rats about a pharmacy owner) - The crash point, which I think may be the undoing of the political genius is the little less (50% less), is actually allot less, so much less that the core provision of service (the one the Government funds/wants and needs) becomes unsustainable and keels over en mass.

  • Can I ask how this compares to Nasonex spray?

In ye olden days I could say "same active ingredient as X" or "generic X alternate" then, angry ozbargain keyboard warriors started reporting me to rights owners and the world became a slightly less fun place for me.

      This google search may assist.

        You got reported?!

I’m so sorry for you. That’s… insane.

I’ve come to realise there are many nut jobs on this site.
