Monitor Only Running at 60hz

Hi all,

I've got a 2560x1440 165hz 27inch monitor (Samsung Odssey 52a) and a gtx1070 connected via a DP 1.2. Every time I try to change the resolution to something other than 60hz, I get the message "Not Optimum Mode Recommended Mode 2560x1440 165hz".

Things I've tried:

Changing it in display settings and advanced display settings

Changing it in NVIDIA settings

I can't change it via the monitor as it's greyed out since it's supposed to be controlled by the PC

Uninstalling and reinstalling NVIDIA drivers

Turning off G-Sync

Turning off image scaling

New DP cable and port on the pc

HDMI works but capped at 60hz

I saw somewhere in the manual that I cant change refresh rate if adaptive sync is on on the monitor but when I turn it off, the screen just turns black

I'm not sure what else to do.

Thanks!

    Username checks out.

    I thought 1.2 only supports 60hz? - disregard - that’s at 4K.

Maybe a dumb question but confirm the DP is plugged into the 1070 not the motherboard?

    • Maybe a dumb question but the DP is plugged into the 1070 not the motherboard right?

Not a dumb question, I made that mistake when I first got the PC haha. Yeah, it's running of the 1070, the CPU doesn't have a graphics card.

      • Might be a PITA but have you tried a fresh install of Windows?

        • Nope, hopefully that's a last resort

@helpme: Is it possible to try your monitor at a mate’s place? Or their monitor at yours? That would isolate the issue to monitor vs PC.

            • @Pelicannn: Yeah, I'm going to do that, probably some time next week though. Just trying to see if I missed something. Cheers

  • Try a different cable. Lots of dodgy ones on the market.

    • I had my own, and then used one that came with the monitor. I don't imagine Samsung supplying a cable that's not compatible.

  • Not to be rude, is it plugged into the video card or mobo?

Have you looked at settings on the monitor itself? That could be causing issues.

    • Not rude, appreciate any help, yes it's in the graphics card.

Most of the settings on the monitor are greyef out. But yes, I've extensively had a look and a play with the settings.

  • ChatGPT answer:
    On your monitor's OSD - Menu->Games->Refresh rate->144Hz
If above is greyed out, disable Freesync

    • Disabling freesync (called adaptivesync on mine) shows the error message but it doesn't go back. I have to reset the monitor settings to turn it back on.

  • Maybe try a different resolution?

I went to right click desktop > NVDIA control panel > display on the left > change resolution > under PC heading select a resolution > on the right change refresh rate

I noticed if I select Ultra HD, HD, SD 60Hz only shows.

I am connected via DP as well.

    • Yeah, mine is the 2560x1440p under PC. I have all the refresh rates, it's just whenever I click on one and click apply, I get the not optimum mode message and it switches back in about 10 seconds.

      • Try a lower resolution to see if it applies?

Try also turning off some automatic settings on the monitor like auto brightness

Try turning off AV mode think most Samsung monitors have it

I am 99% sure it's the monitor and one of the setting is countering the higher Hz. Theres some setting in your monitor that is cancelling it.

        • Try a lower resolution to see if it applies?

          Already tried

Try also turning off some automatic settings on the monitor like auto brightness

The only thing I could see was local dimming, switched it to manual and didn't help. I don't have auto brightness and I've played with the settings extensively.

From what I saw, people who had trouble adjusting refresh rate had to turn off adaptive sync, but when I do that, it no longer works and I have to reset the monitor.
Also, I tried with a HDMI 2.0 cable (supplied by samsung) which should be able to run at 144hz and for some reason, it only works when it's changed to HDMI 1.4. I tried with a laptop which only has a Intel UHD integrated graphics but according to online, should be able to run 1440p at 144hz (it's also an option in display settings) but still doesn't let me use HDMI 2.0. So I do think it's the monitor as well.

          • @helpme: Seems like you went through it all and I would have done the same.

The only thing now, IMO, do you have a spare GPU and switch it out and test? I'll be surprised if it was the GPU (for a reason I can't think of), I have a 1070 as well and they're still really good cards.

            • @hasher22: It's the monitor OSD settings for certain. Google shows a bazillion results relevant.

            • @hasher22: Sorry, I know it's been a while but it was a hardware issue. Thanks for your help :)

              • @helpme: Ohhh what hardware was giving you the issue?

                • @hasher22: They replaced the motherboard (twice) and it fixed the issue. They're not exactly sure what was wrong.
