hmm I am interested in speaking more than reading.
Hard to find an app that gives the phonetic sound in english rather than the hiragana or kanji or similar (e.g., tsukareta)
Does anyone know of an app that does that for learning japanese from scratch?

    this seems good tho!

It would be beneficial if you could learn hiragana and/or katakana. I didn't even try to learn kanji when I was learning.

Japanese sounds are not that difficult and there's not many to learn as they are mostly the same just a different letter at the beginning I. E.

      Ka ki Ku ke ko
      Ma mi mu me mo
      Ra ri ru re ro

You should be able to learn these from youtube fairly quickly.

      • yeah fair, I was hopeful to see a written phonetic rather than the Hiragana/Katakana so I can practice my pronunciation but this app might be good enough to learn it all :)

Memrise is good for that, they have audio and videos of locals speaking to help with pronunciation. Bit of a steep price if you're keen to try it - $10/month, $70/year or $140 lifetime. Or you could be naughty and find an apk for it somewhere if you have an Android.

      • Thanks :)

  • Hai!

  • Am I right in saying that this is useful if you know how to read Japanese?

    • DrMoku is a really good app to learn the alphabet

      • So it's a yes ? I was just looking to learn to speak Japanese. Just today downloaded Duolingo. Was wondering if this is any better.

        • Not sure. I downloaded the Memorize app, but have not tried it yet. From the description it looks difficult to me.

        • This seems more oriented towards learning vocabulary / kanji if you already know some Japanese. I only did the first test, but it seems like a flashcard app, so I don't think it'll teach you grammar.

Do you know how to read the Japanese alphabets (hiragana and katakana)? Duolingo will teach you those, as well as some basic sentence structure. But I found it's not very good at teaching you as such. You just keep doing exercises and learn by getting things wrong. Though it has been 3 years since I last used it for Japanese so it might have improved since then.

If you are a complete beginner, I think Duolingo and Memrise will be better for you than this app. But if you plan to read Japanese, you should add this app to your library for later, as learning all the kanji for different words is a challenge!

  • I'll add it.
But .. .I'm probably not gonna use it.
Duolingo will be better for me , I reckon.

  • If you need to learn Hiragana quickly, I found this very helpful in the early days. And she is easy to listen to.
