Did they just change the connector to make money?

    • +1

Depends on their objectives when they were doing it. Probably a mixture of the following:

      1. Screw over the 3rd party market (Until they get one shop with a cnc and autocad in china to fix them up an adapter)
      2. Normalise the threading for their cylinders, for savings at scale (The blues have different threading by market)
      • Probably their patent expired and they want to extract more rent from consumers.

    • TERRAble idea to change the connection

    • possibly.
as soda king use the the same cylinders.

if thats the case, id be changing over to soda king myself.

Yeah so you'll want to check on the website whether your usual exchange site has the pink quick-connect cylinders available, as not all places are doing them. (Although it looks like most of the larger sounding ones can)

  • I have had a Soda Stream for years and have never seen one of the pink cylinders in any shop. I'll stick with anything that works with the blue ones.

    • I got screwed by my local swap and they supplied a pink one which doesn't work with my machine (was in a box so I didn't think to check). And because I didn't bother with a receipt they won't admit fault. Pretty crappy. I didn't even know about the new connectors.

It's insane that the 400g of CO2 for these things comes in at $35. I get my 2.5kg tank for homebrew beer filled for the same price.

    • That's a new tank price. Swaps are $19. But yes, homebrew tank refills for the win. I was getting 2.6kg swaps through Gas Guyz but they've stopped doing them, and no one near me does tank refills, which is a pain.

      • Oh no. Am low on gas and didn't realise Gas Guyz had stopped refilling the 2.6kg bottles.

Are there any other services in Sydney that will do this preferably deliver and swap a bottle over?

        • +1

Their website says "back in stock May 2023" but nothing yet. I don't know of another service doing delivery swap 2.6kg. In the interim you could check here - https://www.kegland.com.au/pages/distributor which will give you a few ideas of where you might be able to take your tank to be swapped/filled.

I pay $10 for 450g refill with Billy Bubbles… [VIC only]

      • They have a very small distribution area, unfortunately.

            • @sponson: Which is where most people live.

They add new post codes often too.

    “Quick Connect” technology

They did that to create a monopoly so you can't use 3rd party refills.

    -ve vote for that…

Thankfully there's a place called China that might help out.

    • Probably patent but still
