    Good deal, cheers.

I hadn't checked out the Calvin Klein website in a couple of years. 15 years ago it was quite a premium brand, but more recently they'd decided to go mid-market with lower prices. Now it looks as though they're trying to get back up to a more premium price point, but with deep voucher discounting.

Apart from their signature underwear styles though (which are actually pretty generic), I struggle to articulate exactly what the CK "look" is. It's not preppy, it's not sporty, it's not edgy… it's just… meh?

    • +24

I struggle to articulate exactly what the CK "look" is.

There isn't one. CK and Tommy Hilfiger and many others are no longer "designer" brands. They sold their label rights to the PVH group whom slap the logo on products made by third parties for royalty fees.

      • +1

        Then straight to Costco

      • PVH sounds like some kind of STI.

    • +1

The undies are comfy though. Who needs to wear clothes when you can pop them on your lowers and another pair as a hat

  • +1

Is there a separate CK store? The link is only for TH

    • +1

Yes OP didn't post the link, but you've got the googles I reckon

  • +18

Tommy and Calvin both overpriced garbage.

    • +6

Their style has really nosedived in recent years. Wouldn't want to be a shareholder rn

    • +1

      What would you recommend instead?

      • +2

        Mr Simple. MJ Bale.

        • Thanks, will take a look

      • +3

        In terms of clothing?

I get very good t-shirts from H&M for about $12 that last several years. They've got got cut and fabric right.

Levi's are a solid option for jeans, they'll probably have something that fits you. Myer and DJs carry a comprehensive range and regularly discount 25%+. If you're not in a hurry you can get them for about $80.

Hoodies, a few monthly visits to a TK Maxx store is probably a good use of your time. I got a very sound Academy branded one there for $30.

Coats are a harder one, fit matters heaps and brands don't carry a range of fits for each size. You're just gonna have to be patient, wait for sales, try on quite a few. If you hit on a classic neutral jacket that fits your body shape it'll serve you well for years, so don't be afraid to fork out a few hundred if that's what it takes to get the perfect one for you. You don't regret it.
If you want warmth for a coat, aim for something that's mostly wool (I'm talking about tailored style coats with buttons, not nylon zip-up ones).
Nine years ago I broke the bank for a Diesel wool coat on sale at my local department store for about $350, and while the elbows are getting thin now it's right up there with the best $350 I've ever spent. But don't settle for a not-quite-right fit.

        • +1

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'll take a look at these stores

I also feel like buying something from CK or TH, just to see how they compare to your suggestions in long term

          • +3

@Sopzo: No problem. I did a lot of trial and error in my early adult years and am happy to share what worked.

If I had to summarise my biggest learning in one sentence, it's "fit matters more than brand". A fancy brand garment that isn't the right shape for you isn't good, it looks dumb and is a waste of money. You'll stop wearing it as soon as the penny drops that it's a terrible fit.

I remember buying pants 2 inches bigger than my correct size because they were a cool brand and they were on sale. It was a dumb idea. I remember buying jeans that were too short on the ankle because they were my dream brand and I thought that'd make up for it. It was a dumb idea.

Seek advice from someone around you who seems to understand fit, and don't worry about whether it's a fancy brand or not. I promise you'll look better for less.

            • +4

@park: I get compliments for my $25 Kmart skinny jeans because they're the same shape as I am and the cuffs sit perfectly on top of my retro Air Jordans.

If you're bored at a shopping centre, go into some stores and try the jeans on. Don't be a snob, if you're a good match for a cheap pair of jeans it's absolutely your lucky day. Buy four pairs if they're $25.

But it you're new to this, like I said, seek out the advice of someone you know who seems to have their clothes fitting real nice. Individual physiques and vibes vary, but I'm absolutely digging in on my view that fit matters more than brand.

Also, if you have a young person who is on the slim side, CK are good for work shirts with both 86 and 91 arm lengths. They look less 'middle aged business man' (so I have been told, much more fitted around the waist).

    • Agreed! Work shirts are 🤌

  • +22

Tommy Hilfiger overseas is a homeless brand.
Yet in Australia we classify it as a high end brand 🤣

    • +20

Overseas you mean just USA? Can pickup a tommy basic tshirt for like $5 whereas here sells them for $50. Australians get ripped off as always.

      • +8

This is true 😂. I think I remember picking one up for $2 at Ross.

        • +7

Ross is the best ! Like a hobos treasure hunt, we always go for a wander through when we see one in our travels.

    • +4

Same with Levis and Wrangler, over there its Walmart, here is mid market.

    • +2

Lets not exaggerate too much here. Maybe the odd ugly one sells for $5 in a discount store but we have deals here for nasty Clarks volley shoes and Fila clothing. Compared to that, TH is much better.

      • How did you end up comparing Fila to TH lol
Fila is a cheap Target brand

    • High end? No…Nobody classifies it as high end here.

  • +6

Oops deleted my comment by accident. Its 50% off the RRP, not additional 50% off. Also for items that are more than 50% off, the coupons have no affect.

You seeing this on TH or CK?
TH have a 40% off already reduced items, this code replaces that 40% with 50% for me.

      Unfortunately red
Still bought 9 pairs for free shipping

    • +2

I chafe pretty bad so seeing this hooked me. Got 7 pairs (gf likes the colour and recommends the modal material too).

Also added on a bunch of stuff for her, plus some jeans, dress pants (down from $300 to $75 with promo), and a towel. Promo code gave me $325 off listed prices overall.

    Uniqlo >>>>>>>>>>

    • Is this a popular opinion? I think on reddit they get good rep

  • +10

Well, that is your name, isn't it? Calvin Klein? It's written all over your underwear.

  • +1

Coudn't stack 10% calvin klein loyalty discount. Was anyone able to get that?

  • For the people who want polo shirts, they have a 3 for $199 deal. The THFF code brings it to $178.50.

Was at DFO though and they have 3 polo shirts for $159 (with 10% further discount if you are a member - usually you need to sign-up beforehand or it's a 24hr wait for activation - note DFO Tommy registration is different from online store Tommy membership). Admittedly the $199 deal does have more 1985 polos etc. but may not have not many slim fit in the 1985, etc.

    • +4

Not a real showstopping deal unless it dips below $50 per shirt I think

  • If you are a member, free postage. I'm not sure but I got free postage.

Good thing about CK, they made in all over the world, not just China.

    • +2

Free Postage if you spend >$100

    • Well ever since they moved manufacturing to what Trump would call "shithole countries", the quality of CK has gone down the drain.

      • What kind of quality are you expecting? I haven't seen any quality change, they are just as any other brand label. You only playing for the label, design n style.

        • +1

There's a very obvious quality difference between TH and CK.
Tommy is nowhere near the best but they never moved their manufacturing hub and quality has been consistent.
CK is constantly shifting manufacturing, one second its Bangladesh, the next It's Honduras. CK are much worse off for it in quality compared to Tommy.

  • -7

This first model photo is so confusing… so much wokeness

    • +6

Lol give me a break - you're literally in the "PRIDE" section

  • What’s the fit like for a large slim fit polo compared to a large regular polo?

  • +1

Funny how shirts that sell for $30 are now almost $90

  • Nice one OP. Had my eye on a jacket from CK.

Now I've got it with 4 other items for the same price.

  • Found some good stuff on Tommy… But Calvin Klein has become a way to progressive

    • +1

      They are the same company

      • It does not matter they can have different strategies and targets.

        • +1

Yeah, but the guy is complaining about CK being Progressive, but he is still giving PVH his cold hard cash.

Same thing as the Bud Light boycott in the US, sure they boycotted Budweiser, but they probably just switched to another line in Anheuser-Busch's portfolio, and frankly its still cold hard cash in Anheuser-Busch's pocket. Just look at their list of brands

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AB_InBev_brands

          • @annarchon: Haha, I have a feeling I misunderstood what progressive meant in this context. I thought it was just about their fashion. Why are they too progressive?

          • @annarchon: You are right, but PVH may not do the same with their other brands if CK takes a hit.

  • Recommend if you are unsure on sizing/quality to go the store to try some things on before you buy given sizing/materials vary quite differently. E.g. went to store and tried some joggers on and the cheaper joggers were very thin compared to others and also some of the joggers were very long in the same size.

  • Just received email that order was refunded…
