  I'd strongly recommend buying a can opener that cuts through the rolled seam. This eliminates the jagged edge on the lid, and enables you to re-use the lid of the can if you don't use the whole can at once. They're often sold as "soft touch" can openers.

    For most cans those soft touch openers work great - I actually have the Culinare 7501 at the moment, but after running into a particularly stubburn Fray Bentos tin today I realised that it isn't heavy duty enough to cope with anything besides the standard size cans. An edge case I know, but might help someone else out.
