    Supermarkets can sell alcohol now?

    • +5

Well yes… unless you live in SA or QLD :)

      • -1

        Nanny state SA.

      • Ah thats why. OK. I fall into the exceptions; haha.
Does that mean all supermarket staff are RSA trained?

Or are you allowed to sell alcohol to already intoxicated people in those other states?

        • ALDI are very strict at least the ones near me are. I've seen them refuse people who just looked tired 'as they couldn't be sure they weren't intoxicated' , ask for ID from people who look like they are almost 40yo & the one that always seems to perplex people they won't sell alcohol to parents just because their children are with them in the supermarket. So to answer your question at least in ALDIs car they seem to go beyond RSA rules.
Every other week I see parents looking perplexed when they won't sell them alcohol and are told even if they come back without their kids they still won't sell to them, seems excessive to me but I guess they don't want any chance of losing their licence I guess.

          • @Clarky77: Huh, thats interesting.
            Learning something new everyday.

Can under 18's check-out alcohol for over 18 customers?

Here in QLD you need to be 18 to work in a bottle shop.

            • @MasterScythe:

No you don't. You need to be 16+.

But yes you need a RSA.

              • @M00Cow: Learning a lot today :)

I knew the RSA, but I honestly thought it was 18+.
                Clearly I'm wrong.
I was told it was so you couldn't serve your underage friends, and just claim you thought the fake ID was legit.
Must have just been the local shops policy as opposed to law.

I've never actually bought alcohol, Im just going by what I was told when i was looking for first time work a couple of decades ago.

                • @MasterScythe: My reaction too when I leant it a few months ago. A mate's daughter has one working in a surf club. Apparently they can work in a bottlo too.

As for serving their mates. If they get caught its ~$12k fine and loss of RSA, so I'm guessing it'd cost them 1yr+ wages and no job to help pay for it.

A mate of mine who works for Coles Liquor said their line when getting kick-back for asking for ID is 'well if you're under 18yo it's going to cost me $12k and I'll lose my job. Will you give me $12k, a job and pay my legal bills?''

Not sure where to live in Qld, but Aldi in Tweed Heads sells grog. Qld has stupid laws where you can only sell alcohol if you own a pub (I believe you get 5 'offsite licence' within 5-10km radius of the pub . Which is why Coles/Woolies own or have deals with pubs. Every Dan, BWS, Liquorland, First Choice has a licence because of a nearby pub. Corruption in Queensland still exists. It's why Costco, Aldi, etc don't sell grog in Queensland.

    • Why is my question negged? Did it come off as impolite?

      • +2

Prolly they find it a little weird that an account from 2012 hasn't noticed the thousands of other supermarket alcohol deals that have been posted over the years.

        • +2

          OK, thanks for explaining.
I guess all I can do is apologise.
I'm not being weird on purpose, I just didnt know; sorry.

  • Wtf.. colour changing?

    • +3

The butterfly pea is like an indicator dye. It’s more commonly found in tea than alcohol, but clearly it can be added to both.

    • Yeah, Ink Gin started the craze.

This is actually quite a nice gin. So long as you use decent tonic (capi, fevertree, etc)

    • I can't get the picture of Kath and Kim buying this out of my head.

      It's noice.

    *colour

  • I had them when I was exploring some victorian farmers market many years ago, glad them made it super market. It was interesting seeing the color went from blue to purple/pink when u add tonic water to them.

    • They've been in bottlo's for awhile. I bought a heap at Liquorland 2yrs ago for $15ea. But They also stock the bigger bottles.

  • I’m an Ozbargainer. I get the vodka, juniper berries and butterfly pea from eBay, myrtle leaves from my free tree, other stuff from garden and pantry.
