Wi-Fi Extender Recommendation for 3 Storey Townhouse

Hi everyone,

I've been looking for an extender for my current router/modem as I live in a 3 storey townhouse where the signal is fairly weak on the 2nd but on the third storey it is nearly non-existant (as expected). I would like to add an extender of some sort on the 2nd storey to improve the range but I am clueless when it comes to wifi and modem specifications, I see a load of deals for them on here but so much seem to vary. The NBN outlet is on the ground floor so I'm not able to put it on the 2nd floor.

Does anyone have a recommendation of an extender that would work with my current Modem (belong 4353) otherwise I'm happy to buy another modem that is better quality if that would have sufficient range.

Thank you,

Ben

Search OZB for mesh wifi and have a read. Your current modem is an ODM modem where some one else makes it for Belong and they stick the Belong logo on it and it probably has a custom Belong firmware in it.

You also need to know what NBN technology you are using in order to get a new modem that is compatible with it.
As you are going to get a new modem Belong may not be able to support it and as such based on the the technical info in the post you may not be able to support the new modem without getting help from someone who is more technically savy with modems.

    • Do you know if i can use Asus RTAX88U with Belong Modem/router ?

Yes. But you should set the Belong modem to bridge mode if possible, otherwise you run into double NAT.

        • Is there any Oz bargain favorite Modem or just any ISP provided Modem performs equivalent.?

@ChipsChicky: If you have an ISP provided one, use that. Otherwise, any dirt cheap <$50 modem on Marketplace. It just needs to be a dumb pipe between the NBN box and your router.

      • The Belong VDSL2 modem is only needed for FTTN and FTTB. For anything else plugin the Asus straight to the nbn NTD.

        • I live in apartment and there is NBN box on ground level only, i believe its FTTN system ?

WiFi extenders suck. They worsen latency and amplify an already bad signal; but even a top dollar WiFi-compatible router will struggle to penetrate two floors. Look for any ethernet ports on the top level. If they exit where your NBN box is, purchase a mesh kit, or router + wireless access points, and set them up behind your modem.

  • Try a tplink extender, AC or AX, do not go for N. I have one on 2nd floor and it works like a charm and its concrete not wood.

    • Thanks I'll take a look! Age an issue? I saw some deals for older versions

      • No, no issue. Try to get AC atleast if not AX.

The only disadvantage of Extender vs Mesh is that in Mesh there will be one Wifi throughout home but in extender, you have to switch to different Wifi when going up and down as extender creates its own Wifi Network Name.

Just buy a tplink extender from marketplace, 2nd hand perhaps is for $20. I have the one in link below, maybe newer versions are available but it still works great.

  • extender is old technology, halves your speed once its repeated.

    get wifi mesh.

Why hasn't anyone said EoP's with wifi? They are wired directly from the modem/router and then give you a connection anywhere in the property via cat cable or wireless, your choice.
