nbn FTTC to FTTP Questions

Hello,

We currently have Fiber to the Curb (FTTC) and want to increase the speed of our internet which will require Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). I have several questions I hope someone with experience can answer…

  • When changing to FTTP I understand a fiber cable needs to go from the roadside pit to the NBN utility box on the outside wall of our home, and from the NBN utility box to the active equipment inside our home.

  • In preparation for the fiber to be installed from the roadside pit to the NBN utility box, I was thinking about installing the fiber from the active equipment (inside a rack) in our home to the NBN utility box location on the outside brick wall. I work in ICT so running fiber cables is something I have done in the past, and so I figured it might be easier for me to do the install? Yes, I am also fussy :-)

Only things I don't know…

  • Am I authorised to run the fiber from the NBN utility box location to my internal rack?
  • Would NBN installers be ok with me running the internal fiber?
  • There is no NBN utility box on the wall (it needs to be installed), so how do I know where to cut through our brick wall, so when the NBN utility box is installed it's in the correct location for the internal fiber to pop out?
  • If I am ok to install the internal fiber… where do I buy the correct fiber cable?
  • Is the NBN utility box installed on the house before the FTTC is cut off, allowing me time to install the internal fiber cable from my rack to the box?

Appreciate any feedback/information so I can plan the best approach.

Am I authorised to run the fiber from the NBN utility box location to my internal rack?

If you need to ask, then no you are not…

Would NBN installers be ok with me running the internal fiber?

    No

so how do I know where to cut through our brick wall

They will install it. It's their job.

If I am ok to install the internal fiber…

    You are not.

Is the NBN utility box installed on the house before the FTTC is cut off

    Yes.

I'm looking into the same issue: if you want the fibre run to elsewhere in your house (because the NBN techs are only allowed to do back to back installs from the outdoor box to the NTD internally), then you'll have to get a sparky to run conduit with non conductive orange string inside so the NBN techs can just pull the fibre through to the final location. That's basically the only option from what I've found

Yep, anything up to the nbn NTD must be done by NBN.

After that you can just connect ethernet to your router, or get a licenced cabler if an fixed wiring is required.

It really depends on the installer. There are techs that want to do B2B installs and techs that put the NTD where you like as long as it's not in a wet, damp or dusty location. The fibre cable can be up to 40m in length.

          yep, this.
when I had the upgrade to FTTP done, the box outside was right out the front near the meter box.
When they came to install the NTD inside I asked if they could do it in the TV room which is literally the furthest point from the outside box - the tech said no problem and ran cable through the roof all the way to the back.

The NBN box will have CAT5out, not fiber.
I would not go anywhere near real glass fiber based on what I have heard can occur if you do not know what you are doing. I have played with plastic fiber (low speed) and it's safe to use.
If you work in ICT then ask the network guys your questions as then you can have a good chat about what to do.

Nope let the installers run the fibre. Put in a conduit and draw string to make the nbn NTD installation easier.

Ours was laid on the ground under the house.

This, when I had NBN FTTP installed this is exactly what happened from the NBN box outside my house to where the unit was installed in the garage was a fibre cord and string attached and he basically had the cord pulled through the wall with the string and connected it to the box in the garage. Was done in 20 minutes

      I did this

  • I recently upgrade from FTTN to FTTP. I put in my communications conduit and bends with a draw string on my own. All was ready for the installer to run the fibre cable from NBN utility box external to the NBN Connection box internal. I believe their cable or in 30mts or 50mts only. Hope that helps.

    • Do you know if there's a maximum amount of bends they allow and what the minimum radius is?

  • The easier solution is to pre-request Rack Mount (instead of wall mount) NTD for NBN - FTTP service. It is not a usual request and therefore may require your time and effort. Once you have the NTD in the rack, you can use simple ethernet handoff connected directly to your equipment.

Depending on how large your house is the NBN tech can install the NTD or NCD where you like but generally they will install the NTD on the internal wall with the connection box on the external wall. But NBN can be flexible with the internal equipment.
    It just depends.
But you can't just run Fibre yourself you need a registered cabler for that.
