How Do You Churn Electricity Providers?

Hi Everyone

Long time lurker and first time poster so forgive me if I’ve completely butchered the location of this post 😅.

In an environment where the Default Market Offer is very much the standing rate for most electricity providers, I chose Origin to take advantage of the everyday rewards plan with a fixed rate for 12 months on June 28 2022.

Ultimately I want to take advantage of this plan again as they have $100 off your bill and 5000 rewards points however I am not sure if it requires me to leave to another provider before coming back to Origin and I wanted to know if anyone here has experience in moving electricity providers within a timeframe of a few days?

Thanks guys!

  • I have moved electricity retailers within a few days because suddenly my solar was not registering in the new one which is BS.

You probably wouldnt get the promotion again though as it likely has a period attached for "new customers"

    • Red energy by chance?

      • Momentum, and they couldn't fix it from their end "waiting for Ausgrid" to authorise

      • Just switched to Red energy, same problem. BS with solar

    • Thanks for letting me know!
As it turns out Origin have removed their 12 month fixed rate option from their plans smh.
I am now looking at Nectr as the only provider to offer a 12 mth fixed rate at 10% below DMO.

    Not worth the trouble

  • If it wasn't for Origin's 12c uncapped feed in tariff I'd swap every month for the sign up bonus.

    • ive done that twice now.

It depends on the Terms & Conditions. Which can also change over time.

I tend to switch Electricity and Gas every 1-3 months taking advantage of the best signup promotion offers available. I find sign-up credit offers adds up to more savings for me than lower rates.(if you take the time to switch regularly).

Some energy companies will only give "new customers" the signup credits. Example Globird " New customers" includes any old customers in the last 12 months. So I'm not eligible for Globirds sign up credits (including friend Referrals) until after 12 months.

Some energy companies allow switching back to them and avail the Signup credit again (no timeframe)
As an example, I switched electricity to AGL received $100 credit, stayed for 3 months, then switched out to 1st Energy for $100 Woolworths eCard, stayed for 45days, then switched back to AGL for a new signup $75 credit, stayed 35days, then switched from AGL to Sumo for their $100 sign up credit.

Gas meter reads are every 2 months in Victoria, so I tend to switch before next meter read (every 2 months).

Electricity smart meter here in Victoria, switching providers can take from 2 to 10 days. In my experience it's been 2 to 4 days.

Check T&C before switching to check your eligibility.
If not in their T&C, then chat online to confirm with rep (making sure to save chat transcript in case Credit isn't honoured later on)

    • For gas, why not to change after meter read? Also I have seen most ppl only churn electricity but not gas. Why is that in your opinion?

        • Gas service churn takes significantly more time. Electricity churn can occur in as little as 2 days. Gas can take weeks and months, depending on when in the meter read cycle.
        • Some people may live in more modern houses with electrified cooktops, hot water, etc and therefore have no gas.
        • Gas providers are not as numerous as electricity providers, so even if you were a penny pincher and frequently check the prices, you'll find yourself not churning gas as often because of the reduced competition.
        • My last actual read was in August and latest bill generated on 27th Dec with estimated value states that new meter read is 29 Dec. In that case is it too late to change the provider?

          • @nnaa8287: If by "too late" you mean in time for a quick churn, probably, given that we're only a week after the 29th of December 2023.

But if you choose to churn, it will be queued up and actioned 2-3 months later.

If you have a digital meter setup, it may be possible to do a remote read and speed up the transfer, but I don't think that's likely, given that home gas is being treated as an outgoing energy source in Victoria, with their new home ban.
