      More Codecs ….

      • +1

How does compare to the Fire TV 4k max or Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen in terms of codecs?

    • You can load potentially more apps eg Kodi.

The hardware may be more powerful.

    • +2

      explain to me

No. This is asked every single time a dedicated media player is posted. Read the comments in past deals.

Just like you took the time to post the question instead of doing a quick search.

            • -1

@ihuntbargains: Is a simple question. So much so that the first result of Googling “shield tv vs smart tv” answers it.

                • -4

@ihuntbargains: Love that toad messaged his ozb friends to come neg me. Same people every time. Obsessed weirdo.

                  • @ihuntbargains: Jacob I'm not negging you. Youre on my blocklist. That's sufficient, I don't then need to come rubbish people for the sake of it

                  • +1

@ihuntbargains: Huh? I certainly don’t have Ozbargain friends.

                    Same people every time

What do you mean? You can’t tell who neg you.

Either way, sorry for being too grumpy. Just irritates me seeing the same question over and over again. Have a good one.

                    • @PainToad: He assumed it was me negging, which it wasn't.

Old mate always imagines the worst, regardless if its true or not, so don't worry. This time he might have been right tho.. Can't tell with all the deleted comments.

He always deletes his comments. No idea if that's him realising he's wrong or just trying to stop things escalating or something else. Given the abusive pm's I received I have low expectations. Doesn't matter I guess.

Potentially less lag. TV CPUs are not really known for being fast.

      • +1

I guess it makes sense if you have a high end tv that got stuck with a slow cpu/os.
        Thanks

I have the pro model, twice actually, here are some benefits.

Fastest Android box on the market
Upscale 1080p to 4K with a button on the remote
Can run VLC and you can access content via USB (pro) or microSD, also supports Plex streaming for bigger setups
Supports YouTube at 4K, HDR / Dolby Vision + HDR10+
      Nice remote with backlighting
Can use as an emulation machine

At this price, it's a no brainer, the in-built Rokus and alike, they're serviceable nowadays, they used to be garbage, but this is just far superior.

      • +2

Both models have the backlight on the remotes. I would still tell people to wait for a sale on the Pro model unless they do indeed have a budget and don't want to watch 4K remuxes.

Damn I didnt see this has no usb slots. So I went to cancel BUT..

    From catch site:
"Can I cancel, update or edit my order?
In line with our Terms and Conditions once an order is placed, we can not cancel, update or amend it. Please note, if your order is in process or transit, Catch is unable to provide refunds or credit unless the product has been returned."

Wow.. I can usually cancel from any online business these guys are pretty fishy.. also this crappy policy means No buy in future.

    • Please share why would you need a USB port?
It has Bluetooth for wireless connectivity

      • +7

Guess some people want to be able to connect a USB or harddrive to it without extra hardware. Some need extra storage for games and APKs. Perhaps a receiver for whatever peripheral device that isn't bluetooth. A wired controller maybe. Perhaps as part of their Plex setup.

I can imagine why having no USB could be a deal breaker for some.

      • When I travel I always take my Shield Pro and a portable HDD as I can never guarantee that the place I'm going to will have reliable internet, or a smart TV capable of Netflix etc.

    • +2

Yeh catch lost my business many years ago with their poor policies

    • +2

Their change of mind return policy is also terrible. Self post and only offers a store credit or exchange. Even their OnePass membership doesn't get free returns!

    • For Firestick you can get a generic adapter that gives you a USB port via the micro USB connection.

    • +2

Just an update: I was able to get a refund when I message them directly. Kinda a out of the way process… but atleast they didnt ship it out and expect me to pay postage back.

    • You can email them to cancel, worked for me in the past

    • I'll buy it off you for that price :P

  • +3

usb peripherals. The pro model has them so you cant say it's redundant or useless. Also it has 2gb of ram which seems a little low even the pro model with 3gb, but hardware is fast.

  • OOS unfortunately (at $124)

  • Yeah it's back to $258.28 for me too 😔

  • +7

As someone who has had multiple Shields over the years; don't buy this one. Not when there is a Pro model out there. This one is slow, has less codecs and overall has a bad design. It's incredibly hard to troubleshoot with no actual buttons on the device and the fact cords come out either side of it makes it look ugly on any set up.

Save your money and wait for the Pro model to go on sale again.

    • What's a good price for the pro?

      • +4

It retails at $350. The price does go below $250 quite often. It was down to $218 once or twice according to Camel x3.

I would even buy at full price because it's that good of a device. Being OzBargain though, wait for the inevitable sale of <$250.

    • The cord situation is so dumb. Deal breaker before going into any "real" considerations

Why has Nvidia not upgraded the hardware since 2019

Likely to find a deal for Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K at $200 or less as the hardware prices have been declining.

Do it make sense to buy the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K if you have the budget?

    • NVIDIA probably exiting the media player market.

    • i reckon they have an improved one locked and loaded in R&D. They just refuse to release or even lower the price of their existing ones whilst they are still top dog in the media player market & their existing ones do all the top tier stuff as it is, there isn't really any need for improvement right now….Also, remember, the more models they release, the more they need to support for updates.

also….NVidia's never really been pro-consumer, only time they try to appear to be pro-consumer is whenever competitors catchup.

    • +1

There's not a lot to update without a new chip. The Shields have been essentially the same device since 2015. They share the Tegra chip design of the Nintendo Switch.

New Switch might mean new Shield but that is pure speculation. Probably not enough volume out of these to bother developing a new one just for the sake of a new android tv box.

  • Did anyone happen to have a screen shot of it with the price?

    • why?

If it's for price matching purposes, don't think you're going to get it because nearly all places that do price matching actually check themselves, as they know screenshots can easily be manipulated via HTML editing. So if they check and its either restored to its original price or is out of stock they won't honor it.

      • Because I have 28D 12 month price protection and can claim the difference

        • i don't have a screenshot of the website from when it was $124, but i DO have my order confirmation email, which has the price in there. Will that suffice?

However keep in mine my total was $133.95 (i paid the $9.95 postage)

  • Back in stock ATM FYI
