Is This 1993 Honda Prelude a Good Deal?

Alright so I've recently got my Ls and I've been browsing cars on Facebook marketplace etc. I saw this Prelude for $6000 and I'm wondering if it's a good deal for a first car. I am in no particular rush to get a car and I know that they can become money pits but this seems like a good deal and cool car to me. Like I said I have no clue what I'm talking about nor what I could be getting into with this car. What do you guys think?

Here are the images of the car and the description the seller provided.

  • my eldest (17) was very very recently looking at buying a prelude or intergra or celica. (bought a VW on monday instead)

I saw this prelude is S.A. for $5000 which looked not terrible- https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/1995-honda-prelude-…

Hahahaha, passing over reliable japanese cars for a criminal eurotrash reliabomb.

Are you going to make a new thread every time you find another beat-up 90s ricer special?

Used car market must be completely cooked if a bomb like this is going for $6k in 2023. I sold a pristine 96 Civic (first car) about 15 years ago for exactly that, and was lucky to get it.

      lol

Someone has posted a (admittedly fairly clapped) enthusiast / moderately sporty car, and you suggest an Alto and a Mirage.

  • Hope you're planning to get third party property insurance at the bare minimum …

incredible handling. Positive vtec engagement at 5.3k rpm

It's been thrashed and bastardised. Crashed at one point as well given the different colour panels.

looks fully sik and definitely not a cop-magnet…id snap it up before someone else does…

  • IS this a troll post because no way is that even close to a good deal. Maybe for $1-2k it might be ok.

Suggest you buy from a dealer they have to supply a warranty. Facebook market place is full of scams.

  • It’s only $4k if the seller takes USD, but what do your parents think?

Unless you are an enthusiast with wrench monkeys for mates it’s not worth buying anything that you don’t see a dozen of every day.

Don’t buy anything uncommon. Don’t buy anything ‘boy racer’ style it’ll cost a fortune in insurance - that you can’t afford to go without.

First car should be a bland nana car to get you from a-b until you’ve driven for a while. Youre likely to crash it in the first couple of years.

Grab a Corolla from an old man, drop in a sub and some 6x9s, add some cheap mags and your first car is ready.

    No. Don't buy a sh*tbox. Just get a decent & recent car.

Better safety features and & won't give you headaches like sh*tboxes do.

I didn't, not many people do. Should still be able to afford somewhat of a decent car, otherwise just take public transport until you can. As I said, not worth the headache of having a crappy car.

  • NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO MMMMMMMMOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    • Should buy an RS with a body scoop, FMIC that leads to nowhere, and milo can exhaust right?

  • Hahaha heck no. Might be worth $2k.

  • Not a lot in SA but for the money this is a fair buy.

Lol… no. Again, if it’s over $500, your in for a bad time. These cars were electrical nightmares, let alone 30 years later.

What is it with people wanting to buy beaten up, shitbox, crashed and/or faded Hondas for over blown prices?

I was wondering this as well, it's the same dude. Also wants to use US $ to buy for some reason.

      • Yeah, I saw that… "just to confuse people…" Like, really?

    • V-tec yo!

Some people can learn from other people's mistakes. Some can't and have to experience the pain themselves to learn. Go for it op.

  • Find owners forum online and check all the posts for that vintage of car. Best place to find problem is on the internet, also good place to find solutions (if they work)

  • Nah man. While they can be good cars, 6k for one in very average condition is asking for trouble.

Keep looking and try find one from someone older, they are still out there.

Maybe 3k for that would be ok

  • I just bought a mint 99 C200 W202 with 200k, one owner for $3k as a second car/daily. Have put 4,000km on it in the last 2 months and had not a single problem with it. I cannot imagine buying a clapped prelude with different colour panels for $6k.

  • The 90's Jap car nostalgia is one helluva drug.
