Help with Upgrading System 1440p Gaming

So thinking of upgrading my current setup (Ryzen 5 2600, gtx 1660super, 16gb ram) and reusing some part if possible mainly for 1440p gaming and 4k in future if I get a new monitor. Trying to keep everything under $2.5k, I understand there are a lot of prebuilds on here that I could just get, but I would prefer to keep to the better/reliable brands.

Parts that I have decided to get brand new:

CPU+Mobo bundle ($648)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 6 Core/12 Threads 3.8/5.1GHz AM5
Motherboard: MSI AMD MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5
RAM: Corsair 32GB (2x16GB) CMH32GX5M2B6000C40 Vengeance RGB C40 6000MHz DDR5 DRAM - Black ($199)
GPU: 4080 unsure which one yet around $1400 (getting overseas)

The parts I have

Case: NZXT S340 Elite Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX
Cooler: Corsair iCUE H100x RGB ELITE 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler
PSU: Corsair 650W RM650x 2021 80+ Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe 1.3 M.2
Storage: Various HDD

I want to reuse as much of these parts as possible, however I think most 4080 will have trouble fitting in the NZXT S340 Elite case with cooler radiator at front. Also unsure if the 650W PSU is enough for the 4080.

Open to any suggestions on which parts I should keep and which parts I should change? and if my choice of cpu, mobo, ram is ideal

I dont reckon 650w is enough. Id go at least 850w.

    • thanks! i guess ill add that to the shopping list

    • This system would only draw ~550w at load (90W CPU, 300W GPU, 10W RAM, 150W for drives/fans/cooler), so a quality 650W Gold PSU is fine, especially if undervolting the 4080.

The 3080 had issues with power-spiking, so you had to massively over-provision to account for that.

But the 4080 fixed that for the most part, on top of just drawing less power in general.

If you're already buying a new PSU then I wouldn't go below 850w, but there's no point replacing a new high-tier PSU just for the sake of it.

I would be looking to re-use your AM4 motherboard if it's a good quality one. Upgrade to a decent 5700X or even 5800X3D
Also yeah, you'd want to upgrade the PSU if you're looking at the RTX 4080.

    • kinda assumed I'd have to update the mobo if I update the cpu too.
I currently use rog strix b450-f gaming, guess I can really consider that option, would really bring down the pricing by a lot.

Nope! AMD has much better generational support than Intel.
That looks a good board. You'll need to do a bios update to support newer CPUs but doing so might make it stop working with your current CPU so make sure you have everything is ready before doing that.
DDR4 RAM is also really cheap right now so upgrading to 32GB will also be inexpensive

          ^^^ This

I recently did similar; dropped a 5600 into my b450 and it's been a great last mile upgrade.

You should only bottleneck an rtx4080 by 1-2% when using the PCIe 3 on your board - so I'd say go for it.

          • @barge-in hunter: I have a b450 as well and was thinking about a 5600. I don't know what GPU to pair with it, I currently have a Rx 580. Also did you have to update the bios for that?

            • @R3DPOINT: @R3DPOINT - I did a bios update with the old cpu still in it (super easy)

I run an rtx 2070 super so didn’t see the need, but can understand why you’d want to upgrade.

Depends on a lot of things - but mainly budget. You’ll see a decent uptick from even an rx6600

              • @barge-in hunter: Thanks, I did see a nice point of updating the bios before upgrading for obvious reasons haha. But yes the old GPU has done really well but I just want to play some upcoming games well and last me a bunch more years. I do a bit of CAD too so it will help there.

            • @R3DPOINT: Really depends on your budget. Arc A750/A770 is unironically a good looking option, the 750 is $70 cheaper than the 6650XT and the 770 costs about the same, if the games you play all work well with its current driver its really good value for money. Its driver is also not taking full advantage of the hardware on the card, so its potentially a few driver updates away from another major performance boost.

They weren't really good cards before the recent DX9 driver update, but now I think they're quite competitive. Else, 6650XT/6700XT are safe options.

              • @[Deactivated]: I'll look into that, to be fair this is the first I have heard of them. It's a hard choice in the end. CPU is generally easy haha.

  • i game every day at 1440p (actually higher cause i game at 3840x1600). and i do it with a RTX3070. Get 60 to 70FS on most titles on very high to ultra.

Save some money and look for a second hand 3070 or 3070ti

my CPU is only a i5-9600 and i only run 16GB ram too.

    5800x3d and 7900XT, $550 + $1200,

keep most of the current PC and just swap out CPU, 5800x3d is only 6% slower than 7600. Probably need to go to 750W PSU minimum

    • this seems like what everyone is suggesting
guess I should rethink my plan and save some $$$

      • look at the benchmarks, doesnt make economic sense

I have a 58003xd with Arc 750 as a office PC, it awesome for 1440p gaming, cheap.

        • Thanks again, will prob still get the 4080 just cus I can get it at a decent price. And k realised I've been reading my PSU wrong I actually have a RM750x so hopefully they should be good enough!

    • Got my 5800X3D for $486 in this sale:

      Well worth it.

  • 5800X3D, 32gb kit, 4080 and a new case. I would not put a 4080 anywhere near that hotbox.
