Binge now with Adverts, Time to Cancel?

So I don’t think it would be controversial to say that compared to all other services, Binge has been a train wreck since day 1.
Terrible interface, poor streaming quality (HD is the highest available !), general hatred for all things Murdoch and now adverts have been added. I just had to sit through 9 ads watching the latest episode of The White House Plumbers and pay a subscription for the privilege.
The only thing keeping this train wreck alive is the exclusivity for HBO content, foxtel know this and hence have zero incentive to provide anything resembling a decent service.
It should be a crime to be subjected to squinting through a dark episode of The Last of Us or Game of Thrones on this pixelated mess of a platform.
Without Foxtel and its dodgy deals, Australia would most certainly have a HBO/HULU streaming service with 4K quality.
For me, the ads are the straw that broke the camels back. I am interested to know what everyone else is thinking after having these pushed adverts pop up this week.

I hate Murdoch and you should too.

I never bought or supported any of his business here and abroad.

    • I try to avoid at all costs. My VPN didn’t have active servers during Covid, sailing the high seas became too difficult

  • I have discount with Telstra. But I gonna watch all the HBO shows before quitting.

Having no adverts was the whole point of bringing in pay TV… let's see how long they last with adverts.

    • Fingers crossed that it does, sounds like it’s haemorrhaging money for Foxtel.

      • It's got more subscribers than Foxtel now though

  • whats a good alternative?

    a) torrents?
    b) VPN + HBO subscription
    c) one of those pirated boxes that were all the rage few years ago

    • VPN + Torrents I think.
Not sure the VPN + Overseas Subscriptions are as reliable as the used to be. Services have gotten better at recognising and blocking VPNs, that my experience, I may be wrong?
I don’t know enough about the Pirate boxes or debrid service as mentioned above as mentioned in a comment above. Others might ?

    • Seedbox!

  • Did you sign up recent Apple TV+ free 2 months deal? It will keep you busy for awhile.

    • Sure have, enjoying Silo at the moment. Looking forward to Killers of The Flower Moon and The Crowded Room.
For All Mankind is one of the best shows of the past few years! Also enjoyed Blackbird, Severance, Invasion, Slow Horses, Foundation, Bad Sisters, Ted Lasso, Morning Wars.
That being said, for every good show they seem to produce at least one other that is unwatchable. Extrapolations should have been brilliant, just couldn’t get into it. Hello Tomorrow was terrible

      • +1

Hello Tomorrow wasn't terrible, it was just weird. And a lot of Apple TV shows are weird. It also has the voice of Homer Simpson in it.

        • Different tastes I suppose, just wasn’t for me. I liked the concept and the jetsons style 50s future. But once I got past the 2nd episode I just felt the rest of the series was just really drawn out

      • About Unplayable titles: I learnt this yesterday. I watched in TV with Google TV. I click on Apple TV app, didn't realize that ehater you see in 'Watvh Now' or search result are mix of everything including those unplayable ones. You need to go to Apple TV+ then everything you see should be playable.

  • Just curious - who is advertising on this shitshow?

    • Maltesers, Hyundai, AAMI, Flight centre

      • The AAMI ads drive me nuts! If you've ever read through one of their policies they often have far more exclusions than the big brands (e.g. excluding car accidents with people living in the same house). They even hint at this by saying in the ad they pay out only 99% of claims.

        • +1

I agree, the entire add seems to be an apology for their rubbish fees

        • @markathome
I'll take your word for it that AAMI exclude car accidents with people living in the same house.
That would be to combat fraud within certain ethnic groups which are notorious for staging car accidents.
I can't believe that any insurance company pays out 99% of motor claims.
It is significantly less with the many insurance companies for whom I have investigated motor theft and accident claims.
For each investigation dollar that I invoiced, I was expected to save the insurance company four dollars in denied and withdrawn claims.

Honest question, did Binge/Streamotion ever fix their buffering issues? With Binge I'd often get low quality streams (like 240i) or buffering but pretty much never with Netflix/Stan. This was pretty early on in the whole Binge thing but I've always thought about it whenever I considered renewing.

    * Foxtel Now had similar issues which may be clouding my memory

    • +1

Seems alright, considering it doesn't support 4K. What I have a problem with is when casting from my phone it doesn't keep track of having watched what was cast. I've been taking screenshots of where I'm at when I stop watching just so I can remember where I was up to.

    • +1

Not as bad as it used to be. EXCEPT, when there is a popular new episode released on a Monday, the quality is usually shit. I’d guess quality goes to shit when there is high traffic. I’d assume the same if not worse for Kayo given that people would be watching live

  • I gotta wonder how viable the whole streaming model is once every country has local content laws. Seems like the production values are just gonna be stretched too far and we get stuck watching the same things/stories just in different dubbed languages, I don't even want to watch the Aust cheap content let alone pay for the Dutch/German/Russian etc versions.

    • Couldn't Disney do co-productions with Amazon and Binge to produce Australian content they share between themselves? Though I don't think Disney likes sharing as much as the other apps. Plus I think if Disney is going to produce the next Bluey then they'd rather own all of it.

      • +1

Was listening to something recently about Citadel on Amazon (not my cup of tea), but the production company wants to tie parts of the overall Main commercial story into smaller local language spin offs. I’d imagine they are being creative about saving costs around the issue of local content. Pay big on the big story and then plug and play into cheaper local stuff

I like Murdoch keep handing him money!!!

    • unironically, the most basic of takes - why am I not surprised?

  • Kayo and Binge will stream in 4K in the year 2050!!

  • A streaming service should not be supported if they are still showing adverts to subscribed users.

i get where you are coming from but 'what choice' do ppl have

i dont pay for Binge i got a 'free 2mo'from Optus atm in which i think it is 'shit' - why on earth would anyone pay for Binge

but i 'do' pay for Kayo to watch sport, Optus Sport and Paramount Plus - there is no option for 100 percent 'Ad free' i would probably pay for it

other content can be pirated which i am more then happy to do - but with live sport this is not possible

  • The best time to cancel Binge was yesterday. The second best time to cancel is today.

  • +1

I watch Binge every day and haven't had any ads.

If ads did come into play, I'd pay more for Binge without ads and just get rid of Netflix or Amazon which I hardly watch.

Ads have been introduced on the base package for now.. depending on if they get away with it, they will sneak them into other packages shortly

Am I the only one who loves Binge?
Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, We Own This City, Mare of Easttown, Love & Death, House of the Dragon, The Staircase, The Outsider, The North Water, Chernobyl, Silent Witness…….
    I'm not seeing ads. 🤔
The only negative for me is that I can't download content.

    • +2

Ads are base package only, at this stage …. Guaranteed to see them to expand this if they can get away with it. I’m with you on the content, the HBO stuff is great but the point is Binge have a stranglehold on the license of content in Aus, so our only way to watch legally is through a terrible app with terrible viewing quality all while bankrolling Satan in a Mr. Magoo disguise. Based off the poll so far, I’m surprised how many people already don’t have a subscription

    • Would I Lie to You, 8 out of 10 Cats does countdown - man that Murdoch a!sehole has all the good stuff. We're mooching off the missus' parents (higher-tier), but if I start seeing ads we'll click off. Eff that

  • How many dogs did Rupert have?

  • Real Debrid is all you need, too many streaming services to subscribe to and they mostly release crap. Binge really is the worst of all, terrible HD quality, and PAL speed up.

  • Simple solution, set yourself up with Plex and a seedbox!

  • It's not great but it has enough content to keep me going for a bit more.

Initially I mainly got it for Mr in between and Mr robot.. Then I saw it had the walking dead and the wire and law and order and the sopranos and a few other quirky things like skinwalker ranch which was another reason I got it.. But yeah I can easily live without it and just use Stan and Netflix for everything else until the end of time.

Honestly prime video is the streaming service I get the most value out of but prime is still worth it for me for the free gaming stuff that gets given out every month and the occasional once a month purchase.

But honestly yeah I could see myself leaving binge soon unless I get a sudden urge to watch one of the above mentioned TV shows.

  • 1 week of using Binge (TV app) and haven't had any ads.

    • The ad version is for the basic plan $10 a month.

      • Ah ok. I am using the Optus free offer, so guess the non ad version is offered. Sneaky.

        • I confuse. If they give you the $16/m plan with ad free for 2 month free - isn't that a good thing?

          • @foxmulder: You're right, I should remove the Sneaky part out but can't edit the commet now.
Just that in my head Binge was $10 in the past when I used and now it is with Ads. I assumed the lowest tier will be free. Also I went to the website and it clearly says "Basic with Ads". So nothing really sneaky.

            • @archieduh: I see. I personally sign up with Binge when offered with American Express cashback credit card. Initial offer was for basic plan but fortunately cashback is based on monetary value of $10 a month, thus still valid for $16/m, thus I pay around $6/m - the difference. A lot of things I dislikes about Binge features and lack of things to see - if the cashbacks over, I'm thinking to just cancel.

              • @foxmulder: I just keep switching over.
I realised when I bought the Disney plus annual plan that doing 10 months monthly sub is same as annual plan costs. And i actually didn't use Disney much day to day. Could have effectively used 4 months over a year (like once a quarter to binge new content).

So until now I have Netflix (password shared) and Prime (which I am ending after upcoming price increase). And i keep using a service 2/3 months, then do another service. I just try avoid spoilers and usually Binge series after all episodes have released.

                • +1

@archieduh: Same here. I just signed up Netlfix again today via Optus Subhub for $8.50/m for 3 months. I guess after that I will break again from Netflix.
