Netflix Cracking down on Accounts Set up as Overseas Account

I had a Netflix Argentina account set up here thanks to OZB that I tried to change to Netflix Turkey, noting there continuous price hikes. I was able to successfully do it, however, in 3ish weeks it got cracked down and I started getting message when trying to play something that services are not available is the current location. I had recharged the account via gift cards with enough credit to last a couple of months and now it can't be used until and unless the account is accessed in Turkey.

Anyone experience the same and also wondering if it is worth repeating the exercise to create another account for cheaper Netflix then Australia.

Update: 3 weeks later the content on the account is accessible again, the location warning no longer appears. Assuming rollout of sharing restriction might have something with it.

I had a Netflix Argentina account that I tried to change to Netflix Turkey,

    Rookie mistake

    • Definitely was a mistake as Netflix Argentina was still cheaper than the Australian one.

Wondering if its the Turkey ones getting targeted or only the ones that change the location.

      • +4

I'm guessing the change of location. Should have started a new account.

I assume you've tried following their advice and signed in from Turkey?
    If not, why not?
It's been a while since I last "took a jaunt over there", but I do it occasionally just to re-set the clock.

While I'm 'there", I also log into Youtube.

If I had the money to fly there I wouldn't be signing up with Netflix Turkey :-P

so like VPN is a thing?

        • -1

i understand..however setting up a VPN at router level will substantially reduce the speed and a good VPN for example Express, etc will mean extra cost.

Also the whole idea of signing up for Netflix from a region outside of Australia was to have same convenience at reduced price.

@notChatGPT: I think they mean try doing a little bit of netflix via a VPN to turkey, to establish some activity over there, then try viewing as normal?

          • @notChatGPT: You don't have to do it forever, just log in once, see if the problem goes away.
You must've had a VPN to set it up in the first place.
I just use the free VPN from my Getflix lifetime subscription (it's the only "value" I get out of that subscription these days)

You're not in Turkey, you beef jerky.

  • +4

My Netflix Turkey account has been working fine, but I've been using it for 2-3 years already.

    • +2

      Same.

If they start harassing me, I’m out.

  • +5

Why don't you just move to Turkey?

    • +2

They dont have Kebabs as good as Australia

      • If you're not having an Adana kebab, you're not having a good kebab.

        • Fifth-largest city in Turkey.

Adana kebab: "hand-chopped lamb meat and fat from the tail of a spring lamb that has grazed on nothing but budding sumac blossoms, aged in sunlight for nor more than 13 hours and no fewer than 12, seasoned with dried roasted chiles and the sweat of a bearded Turkish butcher"

          • +2

@jv: Try a souvlaki , at least you'll know what you are eating
and "no sweat of a bearded Turkish butcher"

  • Netflix cracking down on accounts set up overseas.

Are you making a statement or asking a question?

I haven’t had any issues with my Turkey Netflix account, regularly has been coming charge to my credit card for 6+ months (for now)..

    • Apologies, title fixed.

      It was a statement

Do they want to lose subscribers? Because this is how you lose subscribers…

The problem with cutting these accounts off is that people wont just go "oh well, it was good while it lasted"… and move over to their locally hosted Netflix… no. Most people will just throw on their eye patch, hoist sail and surf the seas to get their content.

I stopped paying for Netflix when they had 3 price rises in one year, content fell off a cliff in terms of quality/watchability/entertainment. This new cleansing added to blocking of account sharing is just making sure that people are never going to sign back up to the service.

    • +1

no. Most people will just throw on their eye patch, hoist sail and surf the seas to get their content.

Actually, most people will just subscribe the legal way…

      • +3

Nah. Netflix, at most, is worth $10/month to me. If I lose my Turkey account I'll lose Netflix.

Most (Australian) people would already be subscribed through Australia but those that go through another country do so as they aren't willing to be ripped off with the Australia tax. They won't continue

        • +2

          is worth $10/month to me.

Their revenue model is not base just around you though.

          • @jv: But those that are in Australia and subscribe through Turkey have similar views to me. I don't get why you don't see that or is it you just like to belittle bargain seekers?

        • +6

Yeah Netflix is actually not my primary source of content, I only keep Netflix Turkey because it's cheap.

          • @nfr: Pretty much my approach. I think I get more value out of my other streaming platforms but at <$10/month which I split with my sister anyway it's easier to keep it than cancel and the stuff around putting it back on if I ever want it again.

          • +1

@nfr: Ditto, I keep it cause it's cheap enough for our minimal use and not worth the hassle to set up again sometime in the future..
But yeah, have not had any notification to date.
Having said that it's probably time I did flip the switch on the VPN for a few minutes to log in from Turkey again.

        • +2

You've got to understand that netflix is nervous as hell. That know their content has dropped, they know that only a small percentage of their shows has that special sauce that draws in new subscribers. The streaming wars have exploded and it's clear not everyone will survive. No one can subscribe to 10+ services to see it all. Don't forget netflix can see all their data: who logs in to which account from which IP, how many hours are watched, is it binged, how many different people seem to be in that account etc. Imagine how much data they have. They know if they crack down on password sharing a good proportion will not resubscribe individually, but some must, and they're hoping against hope they see a little uplift to take to their shareholders.

          • @Drj55:

No one can subscribe to 10+ services to see it all.

            Of course they can…

You can switch providers each month until you've gone through all the content you want…

No need to watch it all at the same time.

        • Netflix, at most, is worth $10/month to me. If I lose my Turkey account I'll lose Netflix.

I agree. Any higher I'll be cutting off

  • I wonder if other services will follow suit and follow this model of banning overseas account holders from accessing cheaper geopricing.

crackdown on account sharing in Australia also starts today

    https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/streaming/netflix-s…

    • Yep just got the email. Well time to cancel. Let's see how this plays out for them. Little to nothing interesting to watch anyway.

    • This is going to stuff up some sharing accounts from OzB Classifieds.

I noticed that the "with ads" plan now gives 1080p resolution. It was previously just 720p. For 6.99 and 1080p, it's not bad with some ads mixed in there. I've not tried it, but doesn't sound like they excessively throw ads in. There is a reduction of some titles in the "with ads" plan, but I believe it doesn't affect Netflix original series or movies availability. I generally just watch their original content anyways, and maybe others are similar.

      • Yeah i was amazed to see people still advertising slots. It was inevitable it was coming.

        • I had used Gamsgo.com a few times to get a shared account rather than through OzB. DIdn't need it every month, so easiest that way.

The worry now is how other streamers/services will react to this. Apple has "families" and no specification of living in the same household, so hopefully they don't make changes. Not sure what T&Cs the other streamers have.

It's going to be really hard to enforce this stuff. Imagine a family where, for example, one partner goes overseas or interstate for a month or two for work or holiday. They now have to buy a 7.99/month extra plan?

Policing this is going to stop the "cheaters", but it's also going to stop legitimate household members using Netflix in other places. Get the popcorn ready for when the Netflix hatred starts to really heat up and maybe boil over.

          • @bk1973: Yeah part of the reason im bailing is the fact that i cant legitimately use it at a holiday house. That and the vfact that a lot of their content is just not up to scratch. I think it will be interesting to see how the streaming landscape fares over the next 5 years. The idea that they can expect exponential growth is rediculous. And spending 100-150 mill on individual content projects just makes no sense. Surely they can see that there is just no way to recoup those costs. Honestly im happy to let it go. Was only staying on due to a shared sub. Having access to such a vast library of content makes it impossible to actually make choices sometimes. Less choice sometimes makes the choice easier.

            • @hazzad: Their solution forgets travellers using 5g as well. No adequate solution for the van lifer/grey nomad. One of our family is a vanlifer and she's said her IP changes daily. $26 a month is a rort for the service to be honest and they don't cover off all shows we watch. I just added up our subscriptions and its getting pricey….Netflix, Stan, Peacock, Binge, Youtube, Dinsey+, Paramount and Hulu (which addmitedly includes Dinsey+ and ESPN+ in the cost) with Spotify and a couple of software subscriptions we have we're at $220+ per month. We are a family of 7 however but still….

          • @bk1973:

            Gamsgo.com

That's an interesting service! Prices still seem a bit high though so my guess is they don't use any VPN subscriptions (or they need to take a cut).

    • Setup a VPN on your router and connect your external users to that then setup rules to only pass Netflix traffic over the VPN.
      Should probably work.

      • +1

Wouldn't your upload speed be the bottleneck?

        • Yes, you could imagine your upload would be through the roof too if your family was constantly watching netflix through your bandwidth

Its a good workaround for when you want to watch netflix away from home - Holidays etc

  • Has anyone paying Netflix turkey been emailed about the changes happening for Ozzy accounts?

Curious as to what defines an Australian account.

    • Haven't seen anything yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it once they turn on "account sharing detection" in Turkey.

  • +3

My Turkey account is still running perfect. No VPN needed to watch anything. Charging CC atm monthly

All thanks to this deal here:

    Netflix Monthly Basic TL₺63.99 (A$4.79), Standard TL₺97.99 (A$7.33), Premium TL₺130.99 (A$9.80) @ Netflix Turkey (VPN Req)

    oh wait that's my deal

    • Is it still valid? Says "expired" in your deal.

    • Yeh I would like to know if one can still set up a Turkey acc.

  • I share an account with my sister in law who lives in the US, I won’t be affected until they roll it out in the US?

    • It has started in the US today I believe

  • Might be time to cancel my Turkey Netflix anyway.
Just got billed A$7.64, versus last month's A$5.47 for the Standard 1080p Plan!
All of a sudden it doesn't feel like it's worth keeping anymore.

    Was there another price rise?
or maybe they delayed my January price bump?
The Lira to AUD value has decreased further from April 25 when my last charge occurred.

  • I pay for Turkish Netflix with my Citibank Global Currency debit card, but now that payment is failing. Citibank has turned to sh1t since being taken over by NAB and I assume the problem is they can't/won't process Turkish Lira transactions anymore. So I'm going to have to do the VPN thing again and change the credit card which scares me.

    • I use ING card with no issues so far.

Try using a VPN, if that fails, request from chat support a secure form to change your payment method.

      • Thanks @HardQuiz. I used the "update payment method" link in the email they sent me and tried to change cards but it insisted on a Turkish mobile number for SMS verification.

Turns out Citi put a block on my card and I had to ring them and sort it out. Once the card was working again I could just "retry payment" and now I'm good again. Phew.

  • The geoblock should last only 30 days.

    • As in ? The accounts they have Geoblocked will be accessible after 30 days?
      Source

    • Wait, I still don't understand it.
Do I have to wait 30 days to start using Turkish Netflix account after it was setup?

      • +1

For the first 30 days the account can be used only in Turkey, so if you want to use it immediately you need a Turkish VPN. Otherwise, you will have to wait 30 days.

  • so…

    Standard plan…..

Option to add 1 extra member who doesn't live with you

Standard: AU$16.99 / month (extra member slots** can be added for AU$7.99 each / month)

so does that mean two households for $25/month?

    • +1

      yes

  • The latest is - I let my OZ account to expired then followed this detail procedure

YES - my subscription is from turkey and charge is in Lira

however when I try to play the content without VPN ON to Turkey - netflix blocked it with error and you cannot play the content.

As soon as the VPN is ON, netflix works without issue, which is an extra little inconvenience to do.
