Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions

Similar to my last post, I'm resharing this guide after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix. This is the third price hike for Turkey in the last 10 months.

  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 to TL₺130.99 in a span of just over a year).
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremnely easy and effortless, making it the easiest-cheapest country to sign up with
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe
  • Netflix Argentina is now ARS699 (A$5.30) for the Basic Plan and ARS1,899 (A$14.40) for the Premium Plan

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails) - EASIEST METHOD

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 3. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method (if it doesn't let you choose then it's highly possible it's already saved in the account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom), OR add a new card in (this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification however, hence Part 1 - see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?

    Best guide ever!

Thank you Kiz, appreciate it :)

      • used Turgame.
Says: The code entered is not valid

        What do i do now?

        • email them, they may issued a wrong code.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13284876/redir

        • Turgame is onto this now, the sender has been blacklisted. When you go onto their general website, the $100 giftcard is out of stock. If you try to buy their $200 giftcard, it says that you are using a VPN/proxy and it needs to be turned off.

          • @supersabroso: Maybe Netflix has threatened them with not allowing them to sell the gift cards if they don't crack down on VPN users

          • @supersabroso: Bought gift cards via Turgame without the VPN turned on, using AU CC and Mobile number. Worked fine, gift cards delivered within hours.

Tested a TRY200 to start with, then, when Netflix wouldn't accept my AU Card (or a Wise Card) as payment method, figured I'd load up an year's worth of netflix credits and forget about it for 12 months.

Second batch of 1500 TRY (7x 200 and 1x 100) came through similarly within hours of placing the order. Redeemed 5 of the 8 cards into my account. Must've hit some sort of an internal limit at this point as Netflix won't let me add any more credit despite recognising the code and the balance on it. Will give it a day or two and try to redeem the remaining 600TRY.

If this comes through, I'd have paid a smidgen under $140 for 12 months of Netflix Premium, saving just over $136 in the process. Can't complain.

            • @cbrbargainer: Well, that'll teach me.

Paid up for another 11 months, and now can't use the account in Australia.

Only way around is to ditch this account, transfer my profile to another account and use that.

              FML.

I've reported that deal to be marked as expired due to a price hike by Netflix. Starting a new deal post and leaving the past behind us :)

        Is this possible with Spotify?

So now a price rise is a deal. Welcome to ozb

        • lol

        • +1

If it’s cheaper than Australian Netflix prices, it’s a deal. In this case, it’s ~60% cheaper. If that isn’t a good deal to you, idk what is

    • Be better to get Hotstar Plus

      • Really. Does Hotstar Plus offers latest Bollywood and Hollywood movie collection at 4K?

  • +2

Be aware that if you are sharing your netflix account with people overseas, they might stop getting access to netflix. I was still sharing my account with some relatives in south america and when i switched to netflix turkey, they could no longer access the service using my account, so had to switch to second best which was brazil.

    • +1

Yeah. This happened to me. My Netflix Turkey account works fine in Australia. When I traveled to Malaysia for work, it didn’t allow me to watch. I had to VPN back to Australia to watch Netflix.

      • +1

I share with family in Italy and works fine.

    • +1

Signed up to turkey last deal. And thank you. In Bali now and Netflix won’t work here. All good. Offline downloaded a heap of content which got me through the downtime.

    • I've reported this issue in an earlier Netflix post.

OP - do you think we could add a list of countries where Netflix Turkey doesn't work?

      I could start:

      • Malaysia

gonzule, can you specify which country in South America wasn't allowing you to watch Netflix Turkey?

      • It wont work from Chile

      • thailand

      • Indonesia

      • It seems most Asian countries are blocked.

      • Does Australian Netflix work from those asians countries?
If it does, just sign up for a single month on a new account when away and cancel when back is always an option if stuck.

        • I think it would work but you might as well sign up for local netflix for a month because it'd be cheaper. Why sign up for Aus netflix?

  • +3

Great write up, super helpful. I will be giving this a crack with a family plan on the CDC credit card. Will report back if this cc gave me issues

    • Thank you for your comment and for offering to share your experiences with us :)

i originally signed up with my Paypal linked.
After getting on Turkey VPN, after i removed the Paypal backup option, now i can't add Paypal again.

        Any ideas?

    • You know the CDC rebate has ended right and they no longer reimburse Netflix?

      • Correct. But I'm just using as a regular card as I have some funds loaded on it.

  • +1

I just got this email today. I am on the standard plan via Turkey.

We hope you’re enjoying everything Netflix has to offer. We’re updating our prices to bring you more great entertainment. Your monthly price will change to 130.99 TL on February 27th, 2023.

    • +1

Prices are now increasing for all current members effective on their billing date :(

Still cheaper I will stay on it

  • +2

If you’ve signed up through an Apple TV or iTunes account is it necessary to create a new one? I did this years ago and haven’t been able to work out how to change payment type. I’ve always just relied on discounted Apple gift cards to save some $$.

  • how does the pak thing work, do i just need a pak number or do i need a pak bank.
If i need to open a pak bank can i do it if i'll be there for only a week?
A relative is travelling the world and I think I can convince him to stop there if there is a way

  • +1

Great post op! It’s much easier to change the credit card details once previous card expires. I did via tv and worked flawlessly, whilst via chat didn’t work.

    • Thanks @fozzie :)

    • +1

You didn't get prompted for a Turkish mobile number?
I had to change my CC details (due to Revolut changing all CC numbers) and now I cannot register a new credit card without a Turkish mobile phone. Tried the chat method (does not require a Turkish mobile number) but it keep failing, according to their agents it only works with Turkish credit cards :(
So now I'm stuck with method #3 - gift cards

      • +3

I use a wise.con prepaid credit card. I changed my address in wise to Turkey before adding it to Netflix. Didn’t need a chat agent.

        • +1

          That's great info thank you!
Assume it did not ask you for a mobile no?
Also did you use an AUS address when you first opened the Wise account?

          • +1

@bauser99: Yep it didn’t ask me for a Turkish mobile number at Netflix but things may have changed now. This was about six mths ago. Yes used an au address for wise then changed it to Istanbul then back to au after Netflix setup but may not even be necessary.

      • +1

Via chat didn’t work. You need to wait for payment to fail then go via your tv (or box). I think I went via my Hisense. Unfortunately Revolut is also cancelling the online MasterCard I used so soon I’ll need to redo it. I will let you know how it goes

        • My Revolut card worked perfectly until they decided to change card number :(

The new one is not accepted via chat form (they keep telling me chat form only works for credit cards with a Turkish address) and asks for a Turkish mobile if I try to do it through the Netflix website :(((

          • @bauser99: Yes, it was the same for me. First month I added voucher, then I let it fail and I did via tv. Someone on another thread on here mentioned it and that’s why I found out this method.
Via tv I added new Revolut and it worked no problem.

            • @fozzie: I looked everywhere on my TVs (Samsung & HiSense) and I cannot find anywhere to change payment information… I tried to Goggle it but all I can find is via Netflix website or App but then I'm back to square one.

How do you get the account / payment info on your TV??

              • @bauser99: You must wait it prompts. I don’t think you can do before that (I’ll have a look on my mibox in a minute, but I think you need to wait there is no money on the account).

                • +1

@fozzie: I just checked on Linsar tv and mibox. No payment box there. I’m positive it will appear when payment fails (hence don’t load any vouchers).
Unfortunately my virtual card will fail in March (stupid Revolut is getting rid of it for I know reasons), so I’ll need to do it again then. I will let you know how I go. I’ll pm you so hopefully I’ll remember.

                  • @fozzie: Thank you! Crazy they don't let you add a credit card until payment fails!!

I have credit from Turkish e-gift cards until July (will probably expire earlier as that's based on the "old" monthly pricing) but I'll definitely give it a go and let it run out until I get prompted.

Things you do to keep the OzBargain badge :)

                  • @fozzie: Remind me….does the TV need to be connected to Turkey VPN when adding payment once prompted? Account is already setup there.

                    • +1

@Borg: No vpn is needed. You just need to ensure the payment fails (hence no credit on the account and obviously invalid card). It will then prompt you on the tv (that’s how I did it, not sure if it’ll work on phone/pc).

                      • @fozzie: Thanks. Will see what happens when mine is due, I had to use a VCH to purchase as existing cr/card wouldn't accept but I left it there. Touch wood it works on renewal?

                        • @Borg: Yes, just wait and do it then. My card will expiry for the renewal in March so I’ll to do it then.

                  • +1

@fozzie: Please do post it here, will help others.

My debit card (NAB) is expiring in June. I tried adding another card as a backup yesterday but it's asking Turkey mobile number. I am hoping when NAB issue me a new debit card with same card number but a new expiry date, the payment goes through without any issue and no update is needed.

Otherwise will have to try different methods listed by fellow members here as below
                    1) Let payment fail and add another card through TV if I receive any prompt
                    or
                    2) Ask for a payment link via chat and add a new card, hopefully it won't ask for a Turkey mobile number
                    or
                    3) Try gift card route
                    or
                    4) .??? not sure if there's any other way

                    • +1

@hothot: Tbh, the “update via chat” Is super easy and doesn’t ask for Turkey mobile number.

Have done this recently (a few days ago) to charge to a completely different card. No questions asked, just said: “ i am having difficulties updating c/c, hoping you can help”. Agent then goes to produce a secure form in chat to fill out with new c/c details. They confirm updated. I get email stating updated, and account does new card details straight away.

                    • @hothot: After claimed Gift card DON'T select backup payment method, otherwise it will ask for T mobile number, just let it finish the setup first, you can update the card later.

                      • +1

@superforever: happy to confirm it works! I let card expire, today if asked me to update. By IPad didn’t work (wants Turkish mobile) but then logged on tv and it worked perfectly. Used a Linsar built in Netflix app
In the past I asked via chat but didn’t work

                        • @fozzie: You can update credit card on TV?

                          • @superforever: Yes, I have done it before. I used Revolut and lately they got rid of a visa and also a MasterCard. So few months ago I changed the visa on telly (android tv and possibly apple would also work). Then yesterday I had another card expiring. You need to wait to get the message it’s expired.

Thanks to OP's previous guide - been successfully subscribed to Premium TL plan for a while and have updated credit cards twice (card churning) via live chat easily too.

    • -1

      Thank you :)

    • Already signed up and using for almost 2 yrs now. My saved debit card will expire in 5 months, so don't want to try or disturb anything now, but will need to update it soon.
Can I add another card as a backup option now? Will it ask for Turkish mobile?

If this is not possible, for live chat, while asking via live chat, do you use VPN to connect Turkish support or without VPN?

      • No need for VPN to connect to chat, they will send you a link to a form where you enter your credit card details. I tried a few cards but got denied so I had to switch to using e-gift cards.
According to the agents on chat you need a card issued by a Turkish bank - I tried with Citibank and Revolut and didn’t work, others may be successful using other local cards (eg ANZ?)

        • If I already have a working card and try to change it but it fails, will it have removed that working card and I risk breaking the whole scheme for myself, or will it stay there? I’m on wise prepaid but would be great to switch to Macquarie.

          • @dammit: I tried this yesterday to add a backup card (ING), but it's asking for Turkish mobile number so have to cancel the operation.
My already added NAB card is still there without any issues.

  • does this mean my indian youtube also going up….

  • So just to crarify, you redeem the turkish gift card and then future payments will be taken from your debit/credit card directly? Or you have to keep buying gift cards

    • +2

future payments will be taken from your debit/credit card directly?

      This

    • Yes, that's how I had to do a recent credit card change a year ago. Was able to update via chat last week when needed to add new card.

      • Which card worked for you last week?

Best post on Ozbargain! Singed up via Turkey during the last post. Been working perfectly for me, had a few mates sign up using the same method.

  • What if I cancel Turkish membership and restart membership on Pak VPN. Will I get mobile number verification even if my Oz number & payment method is added on file?

  • I am not able to buy Turkish Netflix GiftCard, I dont get the mobile verification code from Turgame.

    • I don't need T mobile number to buy GC from them.
