Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions

Similar to my last post, I'm resharing this guide after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix. This is the third price hike for Turkey in the last 10 months.

  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 to TL₺130.99 in a span of just over a year).
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremnely easy and effortless, making it the easiest-cheapest country to sign up with
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe
  • Netflix Argentina is now ARS699 (A$5.30) for the Basic Plan and ARS1,899 (A$14.40) for the Premium Plan

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails) - EASIEST METHOD

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 3. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method (if it doesn't let you choose then it's highly possible it's already saved in the account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom), OR add a new card in (this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification however, hence Part 1 - see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?

              • @I Smell Pennies: were you signing up to a new acc in Turkey, or did you use your verified aus acc with aus mobile already verified & Citibank stored as payment,
Should mention I also paid for 1 month in aus first to verify everything & then let it expire, then used that acc to sign up in Turkey

                • @RogueWolf: I used a verified Aus account with Aus mobile verified and Aus payment verified. Still asked for Turkey verification

If the prices are increasing, I would recommend buying a few 200TL giftcards and redeeming all of them while the prices are low. Your account will be paid to a future date at current prices. Mine is paid till end of June and plan to extend it before prices increase."

It's like an Amazon S&S, it's always at the latest Price (whether it's higher or lower). Unfortunately I've never seen Netflix decrease their price..

                                          • @johnmelb: will do, my usual billing cycle was mid feb & I hadn't received the price change message yet, for now 3 x 200tl it's taken it to 25th aug, so if date hasn't change by say sometime march then it's payed forward at current rate 94tl

                                        • +1

                                          @RogueWolf: It's not worth it.

Before applying the credit, my next billing date was 22 Feb. Now I've applied 400TL, it's paid till 22 May. That's three months paid. But 400TL divided by 3 months is ~133TL?

So we're not really getting a cheaper rate LMAO, we're prepaying at the new 130.99TL rate :(

                                          • @I Smell Pennies: Oh shit just bought another card 😂

                                            • @RogueWolf: Yeah. I guess I only wasted the payment fees ~$2 AUD to do this test, no biggie. Good to learn for the benefit of OzBargain

                                              • @I Smell Pennies: not sure what went wrong on the 2nd 200tl you loaded, I just done mine & it took the date too: "Your account is paid until 21 June 2023."

                                                • @RogueWolf: @RogueWolf Very weird huh, let me buy another 2 more and test run it

                                                  • @I Smell Pennies: Maybe you bought 100tl without realising lol, hopefully this one works

                                                    • @RogueWolf: @RogueWolf what plan cost does yours show when you go here: https://www.netflix.com/BillingActivity

                                                        • @RogueWolf: mine showing 130.99TL. Lucky u

                                                          • @I Smell Pennies: that explains, still think there is a chance my acc updates to the new price over the next month & adjusts the date its currently paid too

Your account is paid until 25 August 2023.
"Date is estimated and may be updated based on plan changes, taxes, and fees."

                                                              @RogueWolf: Keep us updated

                                                            • +1

@RogueWolf: Netflix really should just note the "Account Balance" rather than Paid Until. The paid until date is only based on existing monthly fee. If prices increase then the account balance won't last up to the original "Paid Until" date. That was my experience when I have had $250 credit in the past.

                                                              • @Borg: Makes sense, had a feeling that might be the case

                                          • @I Smell Pennies: So a good test would be to apply gift cards before a price hike is announced, to see if they then really apply time to your account or credit (and bring the date earlier in case of price hike).
Now we only need a glass bowl.

But you should also take exchange rate into account though ..
If TL keeps inflating, not sure if prepaying is best thing to do.

                                            • @johnmelb: TL inflating means what exactly? (sorry I’m a noob with economics)

From what I can see on the charts, for each TL, AUD is dropping which means it’s probably better to pay with a bank card rather than a gift card

                                              • @I Smell Pennies: Turkey has got very high inflation.
So prepaying gift cards means you pay at current exchange rate.
Next month you might pay less in AUD for the same amount of TL.

I'm not in finance, my terminology might be completely off

                                            • @johnmelb: Latest payment went through at 93.99tl,& acc still saying the loaded credit takes me too 25aug, big test will be next month if it charges 93.99 again or the new rate & my expire date comes forward, still haven’t received the price hike email

        • +2

I think the difference people are experiencing comes down to whether netflix has already increased their current plans billing price at the time they add the gift cards. If you login, and select change plan, in my case it shows the older 93.99TL for premium still. When I applied the gift card, it calculated the date based on this price (not the 130TL price). Hence I got slightly more than 2 months added for 200TL. I repeated the process, and it added just over another 2 months. I am currently not sure when I get the price increase email if this "paid until" date will be brought forward to an earlier date or not. Will update this post when that happens.

          • @JohnSy: Would be good to know

            • @I Smell Pennies: I added the GCs before the new rate activation date and I got it for 93TL for the months beyond the activation date. Now that the activation date has passed, any credit I add via GC, I am being charged at 130TL.
It's the GC credit applied before/after the activation date that determines your subscription rate.

              • @newington07: Hard to know when the rate increases as I am still only being charged @ 93.99TL for the premium (Paid monthly via Cr/Card) for last 2 months. Initial months payment was via Giftcard.

I got this deal for a few months now. However not sure what shows to watch. Any good shows to watch that someone can recommend.

    Hey everyone,
If the prices are increasing, I would recommend buying a few 200TL giftcards and redeeming all of them while the prices are low. Your account will be paid to a future date at current prices. Mine is paid till end of June and plan to extend it before prices increase.

    • Good tip

    • Is there a max extension you're allowed? Would totally pay off like a decade at this price haha

      • Lol, not sure, I can say definitely works for a few months.

  • Followed all steps and got to final part which requires to confirm payment method and am getting error "Sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again later."

tried 2 different cards (Citibank and CBA) - not working, keep getting same error every time. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Confirming also that I am connected to VPN (tried both Cyberghost and Windscribe) - connected to Turkey, Istanbul.

    • Are you planning to try the GC via Turgame?

    • Use GC method

    • +1

Update: used gift card method and it seems to be working now!

Checked billing details and apparently all my billing details are still valid (even though it kept failing when trying to enter it again in the final step). Payment is to be deducted on 21st of feb so let’s see what happens then.

      • Good to hear, any problems in a month's time - please let us know :)

Cheers Pennies. Definitely will do. Thanks again for the helpful, informative guide.

Interesting note:- the chat agent for signing up (and cancelling my account) asked a few questions and made a bit of a deal about requesting the cancellation - including not being able to ever request a refund for any future accounts created (not sure how they would figure this out). But we got there at the end.

      • Yeah I had the same issue as you went back and proceeded without back up but upon checking account my payment details are still there. I wonder if it will still process in March hmmm.
I asked the live chat and they said I already updated the payment method or possibly authorisation limit reached so they asked me to try again in 24hours.

Hey folks, I failed at this last time it was posted (and my parents have since taken over paying for the communal Netflix account since anyway) but I still have an unredeemed 'Netflix Gift Card 100 TL Key TURKEY' if anyone wants? Just let me know and I'll dm you the key. Should work, but not guaranteed. First dm gets it

    • +1

      Key gone :)

      • Big thanks :)

  • I initially subscribed through iTunes but there is no way to add or change the payment plan. Did anyone get it going?

    • +1

Netflix no longer offers new subscriptions through Apple, so if you want to change plans you'll have to cancel that and then follow the instructions on this post

Worked like a charm. Thanks a ton.

  • I wonder if saving $13/month is the only reason most people go through all the trouble that may not even work? Perhaps for many it's more to do with the satisfaction of making a hack (not a deal) work?

    • +2

Well I managed to do Part 1 in under 10 mins, and Part 3 relatively quick. It's guaranteed to work.

      • +1

        relatively quick

Same, very easy with GC method, may be he/she needs a week to read to understand.

  • Looks like theres a few places that sell NF gift cards from Pakistan. Has anyone tried them yet?

As if say this and not share any links!

Just ended up signing up with a new email.
    Working perfectly.

  • Trying to redeem this on existing account and getting no where.

Tried a handful of vpns, all showing ip as based in Istanbul but when trying to redeem the gift card code all I get is the code entered is invalid. Any ideas?

    • Where did you get your Gift Card? Sometimes the ones they give you contain a typo and you need to chase them up for the correct gift card number

      • turgame. They're confident the code is correct.

        • Suggestion only: Open a support chat with Netflix and ask they to check the code. If they say it is not valid, copy the transcript and send to Turgame as confirmation….

    • If you still can't redeem it, I'm happy to do it for you via PM as I've been doing for a few people :)

Otherwise, good luck. Might be GC typo as others pointed out, otherwise it's VPN or user error

      • huh…..redeem it into your own Netflix account? :-)

        • +1

Redeem it on their account LMAO. You can tell from my history I'm more of a helper, rather than a scammer. I'd never

          • @I Smell Pennies: Apologies, it was said in a joking manner but I should have wrote (joke) at the end rather than only a smiley to make it clear.

As a matter of interest, how do you it. Is there a way to check a Netflix giftcard balance without activating it? I also was going to offer to assist but then thinking about it realised I couldn't within my Turkey account as that would activate it rather that show balance in advance if I am not mistaken. I may face the same issue if my cr/card fails to charge after the first month and then need to buy giftcards for ongoing payments?

            • @Borg: haha no worries, I know you were joking :)

As for your question, I’m not too sure. I believe it stays there once you add it to an account and it let you add the same card to another but I’m not too sure

              • @I Smell Pennies: No what I was asking, if there is an issue with Giftcard, How do you assist others i.e. do you have a method of testing a Giftcard number?

                • @Borg: Oh I just offer to sign in and do it for them. If they don't want to, then they're on their own I guess. There's only so much I can do to help through these comments

Thanks OP - I've been doing the same for DisneyPlus for the past 6 months.

For this one I'm getting an error. I'm connected via VPN (Getflix) showing as Istanbul. When I try to redeem my giftcard from Turgame, I'm getting the error: "An error occurred during gift redemption - please try again later." Any experience with this one?

(I'm still googling for solution). Netflix does see me as in Turkey…

    • Has ur Netflix expired

      • Yep - got it cancelled today via netflix chat. Maybe it’s still too soon… i’ll try again tomorrow.

    • Thanks for your comment. Hopefully it works - please keep us updated.

      • So all good! I tried this morning, it went through without issue. I guess Netflix just needs a little time for it all to catch up after creating and cancelling new account (or something…).

        Thanks!

  • Anyone tried buying from the official Netflix giftcard retailers?

    https://www.trendyol.com/netflix/100-tl-hediye-karti-p-47214…

    https://www.hepsiburada.com/netflix-hediye-karti-pm-HB00000W…

You need to buy the 200tl cards, but they're sold at face value.

    • Why not just turgame?

      • I tried there and it asked for a mobile number….

        • No Mobile number is needed and no VPN is needed

  • Can't seem to buy a Turgame card as it need a mobile number. Also the other suggested on, the code did not accept when I redeemed it..

  • Hi, I successfully used the GC method to subscribe via turkey. However, when I disable my VPN and try to watch, Netflix says I cannot use this service in my current location… Anyone else have this problem and how did you work around this?
The Netflix chat said because I subscribed via turkey I can only use the service in Turkey…

    • I just subscribed with the GC, and disabled VPN, and I can watch the movies right away.

    • Are you using existing AU netflix a/c?

      • it's a new account

        • @dazaman Did you follow 1b subscribe to AU Netflix first without VPN?

  • question though: I seem failed to change the password after the above, but I can log in with my existing account.
I tried to connect to VPN first but still failed. any idea?
