Welcome to the ultimate guide of Netflix subscriptions

Similar to my last post, I'm resharing this guide after previous deal post expired due to a price increase by Netflix. This is the third price hike for Turkey in the last 10 months.

  • Turkey is no longer the cheapest country for a Netflix subscription on all tiers, after they increased prices multiple times (Example: Premium plan from TL₺54.99 to TL₺77.99 to TL₺93.99 to TL₺130.99 in a span of just over a year).
    • However, obtaining a Turkey-based Netflix Gift Card is extremnely easy and effortless, making it the easiest-cheapest country to sign up with
  • Pakistan is the cheapest country for all Netflix plans, however, obtaining a Pakistan-based Netflix Gift Card to sign up will be quite difficult I believe
  • Netflix Argentina is now ARS699 (A$5.30) for the Basic Plan and ARS1,899 (A$14.40) for the Premium Plan

Please note: Signing up via Part 3 may be the easier method as most OzBargainers previous had lots of issues with Part 2, due to Netflix Turkey requesting a Turkish mobile number

There are plenty of previous threads on users commenting their experience. Please read it if you are stuck. See here and here and here and here

Instructions

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Part 1 - Ensure you have your Australian mobile number and debit/credit card saved in your account

Complete either steps (a) or (b), depending on your current situation

a. If you currently have an Australian Netflix subscription:

  1. Make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  2. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account. If your payment method is PayPal, remove this immediately and replace it will a debit/credit card.

  3. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, simply cancel your subscription and wait until the end of the renewal period (i.e. keep watching until the sub expires. Don’t let your sub go to waste since you’ve already paid for it). Once your subscription has expired, go to Part 2 or Part 3

b. If you DO NOT have a current Australian subscription:

  1. Sign up and subscribe to any Australian Netflix plan (preferably the lowest cost basic plan - don’t worry, you’ll get your money back). Do not use PayPal to sign up, it must be a debit/credit card.

  2. Once you’ve signed up, make sure your Australian mobile number is saved and verified in your account. See this screenshot

  3. Make sure your current or new debit/credit card is saved and verified in your account.

  4. Once you’ve triple checked your mobile is added and verified, go to Netflix Live Chat and tell them you “would like a full refund since you’ve changed your mind” - they usually don’t ask why but if they do make up some random excuse like “my sibling just signed up” or “you don’t want it anymore” etc. This should be a very fast step and take you only several minutes. The account cancellation will be effective immediately and the refund will arrive in a few hours or days

  5. Once your subscription has expired (should be immediate as you’ve cancelled it for a refund through live chat), go to Part 2 or Part 3

Part 2 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Direct Method - No Gift Cards - MOST LIKELY TO FAIL)

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 2. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. With VPN off, log into your Netflix account

  2. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem: You use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, but it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul.
Possible Solution: You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  3. Open Netflix and proceed to Netflix to choose your plan:

    https://www.netflix.com/

  4. Proceed by adding your Australian credit/debit card as the backup payment method

Possibly working cards from: 28 Degrees, ANZ Rewards, Citibank Debit, Macquarie

Possible Problem: If it asks for a Turkish mobile number, you will have to find a working one so they can send you verification. AFAIK, there is no way bypassing this and you will need to sign up via Part 3

Part 3 - Signing up via Netflix Turkey (Using Gift Cards if Part 2 Fails) - EASIEST METHOD

Please ensure your subscription has completely ended/expired before starting Part 3. It has completely ended when you can no longer watch anything and Netflix asks you to resubscribe or restart your membership

  1. Purchase a Turkey Netflix Gift Card. If you are signing up to Netflix Premium, buy the 100 TL gift card. If signing up to Netflix Basic/Standard, buy the 75 TL gift card (just an idea, doesn’t matter what GC you get)

Note: Choose a reputable seller and make an account so you have a record of the purchases if anything goes wrong. I recommend Turgame (I've bought Turkey Apple GC's from there and they have fast delivery, they charge the same price as the gift card value and the payment gateway fee is very low) or g2a

  2. Once you’ve received your gift card, it’s time to redeem your gift card and sign up to Netflix Turkey at the same time. Make sure from Part 1 that you have not logged out. You must stay logged in to your Australian account. If you’ve logged out, please log back in now with VPN turned off (Logging into your Aus account with a VPN gives an error)

  3. Activate a VPN service, turn it on and set it to Turkey (Istanbul is the largest city). There’s many free VPN’s if you don’t have a subscription to one. Here's a few great VPNs that work:

    Nord VPN: https://nordvpn.com/
    Express VPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/
    PureVPN: https://www.purevpn.com/
    Windscribe VPN: https://www.windscribe.com/
    ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/

Note: Use chrome browser plugins for these VPNs where possible

Possible Problem 1: If you use Windscribe VPN and set it to Turkey, sometimes it defaults to one of the cities of Turkey that is not Istanbul. You want it to land in Istanbul, Turkey, so keep turning off and on the VPN until it lands in Istanbul. Confirm it’s Istanbul by refreshing this page: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

  4. With VPN on, open a new tab and go to the following Netflix site to redeem your gift card and follow the prompts to subscribe to Netflix Turkey:

    https://www.netflix.com/tr-en/redeem

Possible Problem: On the plan selection page, the currency is not in Turkish Lira
Possible Solution: The problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed

  5. Proceed by choosing your current saved Australian credit/debit card (shown on screen) as the backup payment method (if it doesn't let you choose then it's highly possible it's already saved in the account - in this case, press "skip this step" at the bottom), OR add a new card in (this may prompt you for a Turkey number verification however, hence Part 1 - see fix below)

Possible Problem: After entering your debit/credit card details, it asks for a Turkish mobile number
Possible Solution: Two causes for this. Cause (1): the problem is due to your VPN - Double check or change your VPN if needed, then go back to step 4. Cause (2): This is because you've entered a new debit/credit card. In this case, please click back on your browser and avoid entering a new card by pressing "skip this step" at the bottom. If this option does not appear, please restart Part 1 and ensure you save the card you wish to use as a backup payment.

Possible Problem: My debit/credit cards keep declining, and I'm unable to subscribe
Possible Solution: It's likely the problem is due to your VPN. Double check or change your VPN if needed and restart the whole process. However, if VPN is not the problem, you can continue to subscribe without a backup payment method (i.e. start your subscription with just the Gift Card you bought), and then afterwards you can contact live chat and tell them you need to update your payment method by asking them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Note: You’ve just used your gift card to pay for the first month, as well as partially for the second month. For the second month, Netflix will deduct the remaining of the gift card, and the remaining balance will come out of the credit/debit card you’ve inputted, and from thereon each month Netflix will keep charging your bank at those rates (be aware many banks like Commonwealth Bank have a small international transaction fee but this is only a few cents extra. Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees). Besides this, you should be saving >$100 AUD each year at least ($200 saving annually for the premium plan)

  6. You’re done! Turn off your VPN and enjoy your subscription :)

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I watch Netflix?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you watch a show or movie. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Netflix without a VPN and you will have access to the Australian Netflix library.

Q: I want to watch a show/move from another region or country. Can I do this?
A: If you want to watch a show or movie that is region locked to another country, you can do so by setting your VPN on your phone, laptop or PC to that country to watch it. Yes, you will need a VPN for this

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Netflix subscription, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely! See Part A

Q: My bank blocked my payment, what do I do?
A: Some banks block 1st attempt and then text to confirm it's you. Once you reply, 2nd attempt may work. If after several attempts it does not work, just go through the Gift Card method and avoid the pain

Q: How do I update to a new debit/credit card?
A: You can contact live chat and ask them to send a payment form popup (this will allow you to add a credit/debit card and save it into the account). If the agent refuses or has no idea what you’re trying to say, end the chat and start a new one.

Q: Is signing up to Netflix Turkey going to affect my Netflix library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Netflix catalogue may be weird with brand new shows, etc… It might not even change anything, but if it does change, your Netflix catalogue will adjust to what you’re watching and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?

        • Will it back to AU after expired?

    • +2

Just updated my payment ! I let card expire, today if asked me to update. By IPad didn’t work (wants Turkish mobile) but then logged on tv and it worked perfectly. Used a Linsar built in Netflix app

      • Interesting and a good one to know for others with same issue. Wonder if this trick will work using Chromecast TV.

      • I think you will be charged in $AU. Did you have VPN on running your TV?

      • Thanks for sharing your experience. But both my Sony TV and Panasonic TV, the built in Netflix app, I can't find where I can edit the payment, only shown account details and device details. Maybe my TVs too old?

Can you share a screen shot? Thanks.

        • Suggestion only,: if stuck do it on a friends/neighbors TV by just logging into your account on it. Once done, log out.

        • The payment must be overdue. If not I don’t think it’ll pop up.

  • I have got a F7111-5059 error after everything is done :(

    • …..if it helps Netflix Error F7111-5059

Don't try watch Netflix with VPN on if this is when the error shows for you? It's not required.

      • Thank you for the input.
Possible problem: Hong Kong IP address.
        Solution: VPN to Australia.

        • AH, so you are overseas? Just checking as one only needs the VPN for sign-up. Once done, then turn it off as it is not needed to view unless you wanted to view Netflix in another country.

          • @Borg: I am currently in oversea. Thank you again.

  • Anyone tried egypt Netflix next cheapest after Pakistan, premium US$5.39/Au$8.10

Hi happy to confirm I updated credit card as Revolut expired ! I let card expire, today if asked me to update. By IPad didn’t work (wants Turkish mobile) but then logged on tv and it worked perfectly. Used a Linsar built in Netflix app and an Up MasterCard

    • Via VPN or Aus (on TV connection)?

      • +1

No Vpn needed (if you have already turkey set up previously of course).

        • Thanks. Yeap and based on account already setup in Turkey. Good to know in case I face the same issue when the time comes.

          • @Borg: I have done twice in the last 5 months and both times no problems. On the computer asks for Turkish number so no go

    • Hey mate, I tried to add a secondary payment in the past but Netflix Turkiye rejected all my 28 Degrees card, ING, NAB, etc. So do you reckon it's best to let my subscription expire and then update from TV? I've got a Google TV and I access Netflix through it. If that works, it'll save me time and more money as I have been buying prepaid gift card from G2A.

      • Look, from my experience Both Revolut and Up have worked, once the expired. Give it a go.

    • This was really helpful. Trying to update my expired card via the website kept asking for Turk mobile number, but on TV via Fire Stick the payment went through, no problem.

Didn't realise this would be an option. So thanks! I was about to dump Netflix altogether, but will keep it for now.

      • +1

Glad it helped. Previously I tried via chat, but no luck. Via web it asked for a turkish mobile. Via tv it was so easy and worked first time :)

    • You da MVP! Didn't work on my Shield but worked on FireTv

  • The Turkish subscription has been charging me 69.99 since December 22. The actual amount is somewhere between $5.56 and $5.71.

    • +1

      @nivel1971 for what plan sorry?

      • Just checked, it's the Standard plan

  • I could not get windscribe to select Turkey, so I installed the Getflix App ( 14 free trial with no credit card ) on my pixel and it worked.

    From my pixel:
Logged in to netflix on opera browser. Account subscription ended yesteday. Close tab.
Connect to Turkey with Getflix app
With Chrome browser, search for netflix and confirm it loads to https://www.netflix.com/tr-en
Open https://www.netflix.com/redeem in Opera, put in Gift card code ( mine failed the first time )
    Selected Plan, skipped backup payment.

  • Fingers crossed got an email saying GC ends soon and they will continue subscription Charing to CC.

  • I think it has worked for me following the documented steps for 'Part 3'. I've successfully re-subscribed with the currency marked in Turkish Lira and credited my account using a gift card - although I guess I won't know if the next month's payment can successfully be debited from my backup card (ING debit card) for a while.
I tried to purchase gift card from Turgame, but the order was stuck in Pending status for a while and was then marked as cancelled - not sure why.
I used g2a instead and this was straightforward and instant.
I used the Windscribe Chrome extension. I could not get it to 'locate' me in Istanbul, but Denizli worked OK.

  • I seem to be working for me see a pending Netflix charge but from los Gatos nld.

  • I went on to live chat to ask for a payment update form, and they asked my name and email address, which I gave - it's definitely correct, and they said I failed the verification process!

"We apologize but you have failed the verification process. To protect the privacy and security of our members we cannot proceed with changes. In case you would contact us back, please be reminded that the system has flagged the account for suspicious activity."

I've been a member for 14 months paying with WISE.com account, seems like I'm stuck with it. I can't update the payment method myself on my account as I'm registered via turkey and it wants a +90 mobile number to verify… anyone had this issue?

    • Did you try via Netflix App on TV once expired i.e. it should ask for MOP there which one can add. Ohers have had success as per earlier comments.

  • Asking to update expired CC details via the live chat form did not work for me.

What worked: Updated CC details via Netflix app on Samsung TV.

Tried Google TV Netflix app but it asks to you go online to update.

    Bank: CBA

    • Interesting that Netflix App on Google TV failed to work yet Samsung TV did. When my time comes will be stuffed as don’t have a Smart TV. Will have to find a fried that does!

  • Hi all,
My credit card expired and i have updated it but it asked for turkey mobile number.
What should i do in this case?

    • as per above have you tried renew via Netflix app on TV?

      • I tried on my old Samsung tv.. 2014 model.. up to the enter expiry year, it only gave me 1979 to 1980ish options. I have no idea how to future years.. sounds silly but frustrating.
Tried on my windows netflix app, didnt give me prompt to update cc details..

        • Yeah WIndow's won't work. Strange you can't put the date in!.
I don't have a TV with the App. Perhaps pop around to a friends or family member who have a newer TV and do it on theirs and then sign out once done (suggestion only). It's what I'll end up doing should the need arise.

  • +1

It worked lol. Tried the direct method and it asked for a phone number. So I quickly bought a key off g2a for A$9.42 and now I'm subscribed to Turkish Netflix. I should mention I use CyberGhost VPN and set it to Turkey.

  • When adding more gift cards for Netflix Turkey do you follow the same instructions on the post or can you just sign in via Turkey VPN?

  • Anyone know when the new pricing kicks in? I'm still paying 93.99 Turkish Lira.

    • Netflix will send a reminder

      • Thing is it's written in Turkish which I just kept deleting 😅

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just followed your steps and the signup works. Gift card through Turgame and selected premium account. Now to see if my 28degree as a backup cc will work when next month when my gc credit is insufficient..

I used VPN Unlimited for signing up.

  • +11

Found this tip from HotUKDeals forum, but you can download the "PingMe Second Phone Number App" from Google Play Store and use their "verification" feature.

The app can provide a temporary Turkey mobile # to receive the verification sms when trying to change CC details on Netflix.

I did this with VPN turned on for Turkey (TorGuard) and it allowed to me to successfully update the payment details

The app requires you to top up on "coins" (their credit system) to use their service, but these coins can be paid for using Google Play Store credit, so it's perfect for all you Google Opinion Reward users who collect them free credits ;-)

In this scenario, the app charges 0.65 -0.78 Coins for each SMS that's received by the provided mobile # , it was about ~$4AUD in google credit to buy "2 coins" worth of credit on the app

    • I can confirm this worked..thanks!

    • This could be very handy for other deals too

    • I had an issue where even though my CC details were saved and as preferred billing it still asked me for a verification text. I used the "PingMe Second Phone Number App" through iPhone and purchased 1 coin only and was able to then enter in a Turkey mobile number, verify and complete the setup. Thanks for your recommendation on PingMe app otherwise I don't think I could have completed this.

      • yes, it works! In iphone App Store-> download App "PingMe Second Phone Number App" perform registration using email/phone number -> buy a credit of 1USD(~3AUD)-> on the verification tab, select website as Netflix and country Turkey-> next -> it'll shows a Turkish number you can provide at the payment update on the Netflix.
Note: You won't get charged if the text doesn't get recived on the displayed number.simply try a new no. until you get the text.In my case i'd to try 3 times.

Thanks to OP of this thread.Don't mean to take any of their credit for this amazing trick.

    • This is awesome mate. No more gift card purchasing.

  • I had all this set up fine and watched Netflix for a few weeks. But today it said my account is paused and I have to add new payment details. Tried with several cards, while connected to Turkey VPN, but kept getting error on payment method. My cc's are fine and not expired, and on the payment page it still references the Turkey pricing (incl showing Turkey only payment options like the mobile payments).

    Anyone know what's going on?

    • +1

I worked it out. My bank was blocking an international transaction so I set it so that I was in Turkey and it worked.

  • Is there list of working credit card?
Coles and wise seems not working

    • WIse is fine. I use it.

      • Strange. I am getting error

        • You haven't noted at what point you are up to i.e. new sign up or updating existing Turkey account with new payment details. If new account then needs to be added as a backup payment method in advance from without VPN on from memory……..I need to read instructions again..ha!

          • @Borg: I am trying to add payment method. My gift card balance is going to run out next month.

Keep getting "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later". Was using wise card and vpn windscribe/urban vpn

            • @Svky: What about trying to add/update payment method via Netflix App on Smart TV (if avail to you). You need to wait until subscription expires. You should get a pop up asking for payment details on TV. Enter them there. No VPN needed.

  • I’m up to Part 1 b 4.

Asking for the refund they say they can only give to me if they delete my account. Is this what I should do? Or wait until my subscription expires now ?

    • +1

they usually refund no questions assuming you only just created the account. Try a different agent and let them know not to delete account as you may be back but right now don't need subscription.

      • yes! everytime I’ve asked for a refund during the testing stages they’ve done it no questions asked

      • Tried two different ones. Will try again!

      • Okay, Now I am adding gift card but it still asks for a Turkish mobile number.

I have tried two different VPNs. It still has my CC details but keeps asking for a number.

  • Purchased gift card from Turgame but keeps getting error while redeeming, anyone also have this issue?

    • Make sure you're connected to turkey.

      • I did, no luck, might have to try another VPN.

        • Try urban vpn.

    • On mobile or PC?

My gift cards from G2A kept having an error too on mobile, but jumped on my PC and it was fine.

      • on PC….. maybe i have to try on mobile

        • Hm strange, what's the error that comes up? For mine it simply said the code was not valid when on mobile.

  • +1

Thanks for the write-up OP, my card expired so used the guide to re-sign up.

Just a note that I bought a gift card from G2A from a trusted seller and it said the code was not valid, tried from another highly rated seller and same thing, not valid.

However, that's when I was on my phone (VPN was fully working), but I went on my desktop PC and both codes worked.

Using PIA VPN on both devices.

  • +1

My card on my Turkey account need to be updated.
Couldn't do it online as it needed Turkey OTP.
I tried to chat with the live chat and the staff was great and send me the online form for me to fill in my new 28degrees replacement card and successfully updated on my account.
Thankfully i don't have to use the giftcard or smarttv route as i don't have new tv.

  • Does anyone get billed and refunded by Netflix each month? Since a recent plan cost increase in Dec. Someone I know gets charged ~3300 ARS a month when the plan cost is meant to be 1899. But each month a refund of ~1400 is given, so it evens out.

  • +1

Thanks OP for such a descriptive guide. I however did face some problems. Sub expired yesterday, bought a gift card from Turgame which came after quite a while given the time zone diff. Tried to follow the guide , kept getting invalid code, tried different browsers, my paid VPN- Ivacy, free VPNs like windscribe , cleared cache, spoke to Netflix helpdesk on chat while connected to the VPN, they tested the code and said it is incorrect.

Raised a helpdesk ticket with Turgame, they said you need to create a new gmail id WHILE connected to VPN, then go to the redeem page, put in the key and the new gmail id which of course is bull since the process is the same and resulted in invalid code again.

Then read someones comment here about getflix, downloaded that .. the code was accepted, credit applied, signed in and forgot the part in the guide which says skip the add backup payment method and selected credit card which had all details filled in but next step asks for a Turkish phone no to confirm . So logged out rinse repeat with the new gmail created with Turkish VPN..same result .

In short :-D follow the guide Verbatim with getflix and you will be good :-D … or with anyother VPN but if you get invalid code and the /redeem page url shows om or om-tr instead of just tr inspite of you typing tr or clicking on links then your VPN is the issue . Oman and Turkey seems to be the same to Netflix origin detection code even though standard checks via network tools on windows and linux or whatmyip showed it as Istanbul!! And the guide clearly states to make sure to add the cc BEFORE sub expires and to SKIP backup setup while connected to VPN and using the gift card but I was thick so don't be like me and you will save yourself some time .. Thanks again OP

    • Thanks @shaidas. I remember you from my Youtube India post. Sorry you had to go through this trouble but thank you for your feedback on your experience. I hope it helps others here :)

  • I've already done this method and have a Turkey account but want to change plan, do I go through this process again?

    • You will need to cancel existing plan and then add a new preferred subscriptiin. If lucky it will add without issue using existing account/payment method. What are you going from and to (as a matter of interets)?

      • I don't see why you would need to cancel ..
        Did anything change recently?

    • +2

No, just go and change plan via website

      • +2

Sorry, I was thinking of Youtube subscription, this is Netflix. Should be fine to just change plan directly on existing account. Wish YouTube was as easy.

  • I got a price increase email in Feb to be effective in March but still getting charged 93.99TL.

My card has now expired and payment failed. If I renew, will I pay 130TL?

    • Yeah still getting charged 93.99TL as well. I mean I'm not complaining but have been anticipating the increase but it never came.

      • I wonder if it has to do when you signed up i.e. first 3 months prior to notification? I signed up on 18th Jan, and only received the notification email of price increase on 18th Apr (increases in May for me).

        • Not sure but I signed up in January also.

    • This is my situation atm too. Except kinda stuck at mobile verification when trying to add new payment method (Turkish mobile).

  • Think im missing something. So you sign up with a turkish gift card for your first payment but subsequent months will debit the cc you've added, right?

    • +3

You only need to buy a gift card if your existing credit card (already verified and in your account) fails to be accepted on initial sign-up.
So yes, if all goes well, the credit card will get charged once Gift card value has been used up.

      • Thank you
