Second Job Suggestions?

I work 9-5 in a job that is done remotely a few days a week but feel with the cost of living may consider a second job. Any suggestions for an after hours role position say night shift? Much as I would like the second job to be an office/remote role I assume that it would probably be something like retail manufacturing?

Or is working 9-5 then say 6 midnight or something similar like death sentence affecting my health?

My job is definitely underpaying me (recruitment agencies confirmed this) so the 3rd and obvious option is to just move to a different role.

      Why reserves and not seniors?

  • I'm on a decent salary, but also looking for a second job. Say 2-3 days a week. I'm still relatively young, so thought why not. Also as a back up.

I wouldn't mind stocking shelves at Coles, but it's easier to become a doctor…

Do you have an skills that could be used for a side hustle rather than a second job?

Otherwise, in your case focus on getting a new role. Why have two jobs that pay the same or even less than one job?

I got a second job at a bar. Pay was average, minimum wage something like $30 an hour if lucky taxed at nearly 40% but it was hella fun. Liked it more than my day job haha

  • What about focusing on something that you can do with very little input from you/automation but that you get paid for.

Something that springs to mind is audio transcription. There are sites out there you can do transcription work for and sites that you can use to transcribe the audio for you. You might have to just listen back and tidy up the transcription a bit for each job you complete.

Tried that but sales dwindled now that its getting colder, maybe when summer rolls around again it will pick up.

  • When I was in the same predicament, I would think of many ways to supplement by main income. This would include getting a second job or a side hustle. The best thing for me was just to get a better paying job. So far it has worked for me.

  • I worked a second job in my 20's I did it for a while to save up cash but it was tough since I worked Friday Night, All Day Saturday and All Day Sunday then back at my regular job Monday to Friday. I had a goal but I ended up very stressed and moody out of it. I would not recommend.

Are you not able to find a new job in the same field that pays more? Sounds like you're underpaid so it should be easy to get back to market?

I'm too lazy to read everything but this is the obvious one for me. Changing jobs is really the only way these days to get paid more.

Quick and easy: Uber, lawn mowing, work in a store, cafe, hotel or a field that you know a lot about like mechanic shop, garden centres, car parts, motorcycle shop, etc. your knowledge and interest in the topic will get you the job.

Long term: Upskill from cheap courses on Udemy, get certifications, learn a new skill (photography etc.)

Yes. Your extra efforts are much better spent focusing on this than working to death with a second job.

Life isn't just work, find a balance, even if you need to scale back spending.

    • This is the only answer.

Payrise at current job or find a new job. This is easy low hanging fruit. Litterally spend 1 hour applying for other jobs. Ask for 20% more than current salary.

In the meatime, spend the extra time improving your work skills/knowledge, instead of working low level 2nd job.

Get another remote 9 to 5 job. Work both at the same time.

      They said a job tho

  • Maybe a Saturday shift somewhere for an extra $200 a week income if that would help but working 9 am to midnight everyday will make you hate everyone and everything. Probably not worth the trouble.

  • Cleaner as a contractor. Can do after hours or weekends, listen to music, no stress.

    Night shift at the abattoir.
Wear work clothes home on public transport. (make sure the top button or zip is done right up to the top.)
You'll have the choice of seats.

  • food delivery is really the only reasonable option and low effort, up to you if its worth it or not

  • I started my own business which mainly operates on weekends.

  • I work nightshifts at an Amazon delivery station. The pay is good considering how simple the work is and it's easy, stress free work. Highly recommend it, especially as Prime Day is coming up soon, you'll get a job easily so long as there's a station near you.

The fulfilment centres might give you hours more suited to your needs, the work isn't as enjoyable though.

    • What do you actually do? Sort orders? Is it labour intensive?

      • At the delivery stations you’d do about 4 or 5 different roles in the beginning so you won’t be doing the same thing every day, sorting packages is a big part of it though. Some days you’ll spend half of the shift just giving routes to the flex drivers, other days you might be picking packages off the conveyor and others you might be sorting them into the bags. Some days you’ll do all three.

The first week or two you’d probably find it difficult physically, even if you’re in decent shape. You adjust to it pretty quickly though, it’s not difficult work. Lots of older people work there and are fine keeping up with the work, you’ll never have to lift anything much heavier than 20kg (I think 23kg is the heaviest I’ve seen).

        • Cheers this was helpful. Considerations for when I am older.

  • Security at a pub or bar tending.

  • forklift driving? the license takes 3 days to learn, cost ~600 last time I did it ( office promised me to moved me into the warehouse if I had a license but never kept their promise). The driver at my place makes ~minimum 35/h but they never told me exact number. Was told you can make 45/h as driver depends on the place.

    • $35 /hr is what I heard as well about 10 years ago not sure if it would be same even today.. !

      • I didn’t bother checking it out yet but i think it’s 45/h, from the way these drivers avoid mentioning it

  • Weekend retail with penalty rates if you are good with communications and don’t mind potentially standing all day. Something simple to get you through and there are a lot of vacancies depending on where you are.

I have done a lot of after hours work in my 20s, it burnt me out pretty quick.

    Try Amazon flex.

    • too many people now, and except for Botany, likely you will have to travel ridiculous distances just to deliver

  • Um could be an option if you’re risk adverse but what about day trading? It’s very risky but if you’re careful, $200 a day can be made without the tiredness of a second job.

  • So many people here talk about upskill and find another job with high pay but upskilling isn't for everyone…!

There is only one thing I could upskill in my current job that gives me higher pay and promotion and that is "learn to suck-up" … !

If you are not in IT then after 40 in office job your next employer will only pay you more when you have experience in the field you have been working for last 20+ year not for extra education that you just learnt.. !

I experienced this first hand and did upskill with some course in planning in a hope to move out to different role but couldn't get in as there are already people with experience in that field applying for role .. lol

  • If you're an active/sporty person, could take up being a referee (e.g. touch football), to my knowledge it wouldn't be taxed as your second job because it is considered a hobby

  • What are you good in? Probably you need to find a single product/service and excels in it.
I have been looking for cross borders trading but will never beats the big boys.

  • Night shift at hotels, bars, packing online orders eg. chemist
