Second Job Suggestions?

I work 9-5 in a job that is done remotely a few days a week but feel with the cost of living may consider a second job. Any suggestions for an after hours role position say night shift? Much as I would like the second job to be an office/remote role I assume that it would probably be something like retail manufacturing?

Or is working 9-5 then say 6 midnight or something similar like death sentence affecting my health?

My job is definitely underpaying me (recruitment agencies confirmed this) so the 3rd and obvious option is to just move to a different role.

    Uber

I assume you're joking, but just in case:

Uber is a terrible way to make money unless you have no other skills. You can't just click something the app and drive, you have to get a taxi driver licence get your car approved as a taxi (QLD), and take out special (more expensive) insurance. Uber takes over a quarter of your fare. Then you have to pay GST (on the full fare, not your portion), then deduct running costs. You won't get nonstop fares. During the day you will make less than minimum wage. The only way to make decent money is to ferry around drunks on a fri/sat night. This doesn't even factor in risk of damage, assault, and devaluation.

Then just drive food instead of people? I signed up for Uber eats delivery a while ago, the process was very easy and pay is ok considering you can just clock in whenever you want.

      • Are you driving uber and prefer less competition by scaring others ?

OP said extra cash not as first main job and uber provide that flexibility… !

        • I'm trying to help people avoid the mistake. I drove when I was in Uni. I found it unprofitable and Uber to be completely uninterested when I had issues with abusive people. There is constant driver churn, they care far more about the riders.

The flexibility isn't worth much when a) you have to drive a lot to make up for all the upfront costs of insurance and licensing, and b) there's no decent fares at random hours of the day. Unless they're going to the airport, most people who get an Uber in the city are going to the suburbs where there's few fares so you either wait a while earning nothing, or you drive back to a centre at your cost.

So if you want to make back all the money you wasted you have to work fri/sat nights, and if you can do that anyway you don't need a flexible job. Otherwise you're paying off hundreds in fees one $8 fare at a time. And that might be all you get in an hour.

My friend signed up at the same time and found since he now had a taxi driver license, it was actually more profitable to rent and drive a taxi from one of the main companies (driver/owners will rent them out so they aren't idle).

I ended up working casually/agency in the industry I was studying, which fit around my classes and other commitments. Casual work has always been the flexible option.

I suppose its good work just sitting around.

Could easily bring in an extra $200 a week tax free. OP will need to relocate to Adelaide.

    • +3

Storeman Part Time. Boss can only justify 30 hours a week., especially at the moment. My current package is 32 hours a week, so I do casual work.

          • +4

@BewareOfThe Dog: Move on man, he's probably getting 40hrs work outta you in those 32hrs anyway, it probably works out great for him.

Plenty of jobs around at the moment just keep applying and you'll find something full time.

            • +1

@Binchicken22: I've applied for @ 50 jobs since last October. Only 3 interviews. One was with Aldi, and the recruiter, is positive, and recommending me and to expect a call from the store manager for one on one interview in the following week. Then the following day the email arrives, Thank you for your application, blah blah, oustanding blah blah, all the best etc

    • like 68k but I was previously on 80k in different role just had to change roles due to a restructure can came back to a previous employer because I was offered my old role back only months after leaving. Prospect of being promoted is one thing I could consider.

      • +4

Go job hunting and find something better paying for the same hours you already currently do.

      • +1

68K is actually pretty decent esp you are doing it remotely. Mind to share what kind of job you are doing now?

Im also looking for side hustle or alternative income.

        • -1

          68k is not good

          • +2

@magikz: I’d say insufficient information to make a call either way. OP said “9-5 in a job that is done remotely a few days a week”

Is a few days per week three? In that case 68k for 0.6FTE seems pretty good. But $68k for 1.0FTE is substantially different.

    • last role 80k plus
current role 67k but increasing rent and bills
had to leave prior role due to termination
went to current role which was a previous role I had thinking there was growth potential but the salary couldn't match

      • How many days per week do you work? Or how many hours per week are you contracted for?

How old are you? If you’re in your 20s I don’t think it’s a death sentence but as you get older it’d be a lot harder working during the day then again at night.

I’d recommend working at the movies.

    • for free movies oooor is the pay good or something?

      • +3

Pay is decent but don’t expect anything amazing, it’s hospitality. Probably higher than a small cafe and you should be paid super as well. Free (or at least much cheaper) movies, heavily discounted candy bar items, staff screening nights and hours are accommodating for uni students (can work weekdays or weeknights depending on rostering).

In general the perks are better than shelf stacking at Woolies IMO, unless you dislike movies.

        • +1

I am a film buff though… arthouse cinema like dendy would be a great second job if I could do on weekends and such.

        • In general the perks are better than shelf stacking at Woolies IMO, unless you dislike movies.

It isn't much better than being a bar worker. Get heaps of abuse and mess to clean up on the weekends.

          • @serpserpserp: I’d say that depends on the cinema itself. I never copped abuse in my time working at the movies and there were probably 2-3 instances where I heard someone went off at the manager on duty during the time I worked there.

People leaving the cinema in a mess is frustrating I don’t disagree with that. Sweeping popcorn on the floor and off chairs is probably one of the least enjoyable aspects of the job, but still not extremely terrible.

The buzz of new movie releases and midnight screenings where the entire cinema is packed (as in all cinemas in the complex are showing the same movie at midnight and they’re basically all sold out) and people dress up, e.g. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Avengers etc. is something I look back on fondly. The world feels different now.

My job is definitely underpaying me (recruitment agencies confirmed this) so the 3rd and obvious option is to just move to a different role.

Move to a company that'll pay you the market rate.

Because, depending on your marginal tax rate, any income you make on the side from a second job (which is likely to be the minimum wage!) will be taxed at that rate - it may not even be worth your time.

    • Not sure why youre getting negged. I agree. Im not taking a 2nd job because i dont want to get taxed at my marginal tax rate. Better to spend the time saving money….

Same as offsettimg mortgage vs savings account imho

  • Stocking shelves at Colesworth would fit the criteria but probably hard to get a position.

    • I know Woolworths restructured their stacking shelf job conditions several years ago.
Most staff didn't like the conditions, and went and worked elsewhere like Coles. I had a friend that did this, and found the Coles store worse, and is now back at WW under worse rates etc.

    • +3

A lot of Colesworth don't stock shelves at night anymore. It's why you find prices for sales that don't start until the next day being put up before closing and empty shelves during business hours.

      • +3

There are also often people in the way stocking shelves, not their fault of course, they mostly do their best to keep getting out of everyone's way.

      • usually around 10-11pm i find

    AirTasker

    • You can make a fair bit of extra $ on the odd jobs.

      • +2

Definitely. And if you do a great job you can do jobs for those customers directly and cutout the stupid airtasker fee.

I use airtasker as a lead gen tool.

Parcel sorting with any of the big couriers. Was good pay when I did it. Not sure now.

It was physical work but I got fit and lost a tonne of weight in the process. I took it as getting paid going to the gym.

Sometimes you can get paid move changing jobs but often the extra money may not make up for bad work environment. Extra travel etc
