  • Thoughts on this cpu as an upgrade from a 3900x for gaming and light media work? (Yes i know new mobo and ram required)

    • +4

For your use case, I can't expect you'd see much of a benefit, especially given the still hefty price of changing to new mobo and DDR5.
I mean, yes, it would be better, but enough to warrant the cost/time? I'd expect not.
You'd probably see the about the same benefit going to a 5800X3D, for a lot less cost.

Depends on what he meant by light media work; Paget Photoshop benchmark showed ~40-50% improvement going from my 3700X to 7700X so I'd hardly call that insignificant and DDR5 ram dropped so much that you can get a fairly tight timing 32GB 6000MHz kit for not much over $200 and there are sub $300 B650 boards out on the market now. Not to mention platform longevity should he wants to upgrade CPU few years down the line.

I just got this as a bundle deal with the B650 MB. Should hold up well for a few years. I am moving from a very old Intel build.

    • +1

I am using it, it's a real good cpu for heavy multi-task.
I just limit it's tdp to 105w with very few performance lose but get a very quite and low temperature case.
Doesn't have the issue of Intel processors where critical programs run on e-cores problem.

Intel processors have a 10% performance advantage in playing games at 1080p, but at 4K, they are nearly identical to AMD.

    • I'd rather look into a 5000 series cpu (new with a deal or 2nd hand), than upgrading to a brand new platform. For light media work, you may not see a big improvement over the cost you're going to spend on full platform upgrade.

if only the 5800x3D would drop in price as well.

  • Im still quite happy with the deal I got on ebay for $611.15 in March :D

  • zen4 my beloved

Be mindful of the motherboard failings with this series

      Failure is a 4-letter word…

  • As someone who has been on Ryzen since 1700X it's really hard to trust Motherboard stability after multiple years of issues.

Sitting on a 3700X atm with an Asus Crosshair VI and is stable and gives me enough computer without breaking the power bill. Hard to justify spending $1300AUD to upgrade

    • EDIT: Looks like I could potentially go to a 7900 + MSI B650 + Corsair 32GB DDR5 for $1054
