Would be great if people who bought this report the NAND flash type (QLC? TLC? Which maker and number of layers).

PNY, just like most of the SSD makers, do swap components. So, there is a bit of luck involved, you could be very happy or you know….

    • I picked one up so I will definitely update you when it comes

    • i think its crucial QLC

    • +1

If you're still interested its QLC (Micron IA81G96AZA)

  • +2

It's definitely QLC (as it is with the 2TB model) with a smallish SLC cache. But you'd buy this model because it's cheap storage with overall better performance than a mechanical hard drive - until its cache buffer runs out at least. On a large write job, once the SLC cache buffer is filled the slow QLC memory kicks in and writes become much slower than a mechanical hard drive. But reads are always super fast so it's still good value for use cases with low writes such as games storage or data archival. If you do a lot of large writes, a mechanical hard drive is likely to be a better option for the more consistent write speed.

No DRAM either, which is the better option over SLC in most cases.

I do wonder about using these drives, QLC in particular for data archiving due to the potential for bit rot if not frequently used.

      • +1

Yes agreed, don't use M.2's for offline storage data archival (for risk of data loss when not connected to a power source for a long time), only use M.2's for online data storage when connected to your PC/laptop.

        • I suspect it isn't just an issue with M.2, but with all common flash storage and particularly QLC.

      • if i'm just a casual user on PC, and all i care about is large enough storage for AAA games and boot to Windows, do i need to mind much about these?

        • Fine for the games, but you might find it slow as a boot drive.

          • @whats up skip: thanks. I have 970 Evo Plus 500GB now, is it worth the upgrade since the PNY's speed is faster on paper than my 970 Evo

            • @jianh: I think you would typically find the Samsung 970 EVO to be faster and a better boot drive.

            • +1

@jianh: If your PC doesn't support PCIe gen 4 x4, if you were to put this SSD in, it would be slower than 970 Evo Plus (running PCIe gen 3 x4 mode).

Even if you have a PC with PCIe gen 4 x4 m.2 slot, once the SLC write cache is depleted, the QLC speed can be painfully slow (and slower than HDD in terms of write speed may even be the case).

Is this a good drive for games?

    • +2

Could even be classified as overkill for a games drive, but yes extremely fine!

  • YIPEE not… wasnt it $229 in another deal the other week? I recall it cos I thought heyyy at these prices you could start running a nas using them lol

    • Exactly what I’m doing with my Rpi, bought one of these today and should have a more responsive Plex server than the WD Mycloud home I currently have stuffed in the cupboard

    • +9

Yes, I can't be paying a dollar more than $229 for this now. That's against the ozb principles.

      • Sadly I'm waiting for someone to say… but this is still a decent price….. lol wut

        • but this is still a decent price….. lol wut

          ;)

  • Appreciate any advice (please) on how this will go with a PS5?

    https://www.playstation.com/en-au/support/hardware/ps5-insta…

    • Any gen 4 ssd works perfectly fine for ps5

even the worst ones which have 3000mbps! Digital foundry proved it on youtube!
