Bigger capacity costs more per TB ffs

  • At that price for 2TB, grab literally any budget PCIE 4.0 drive with a special mention to the SN770.

Same is true at 1 TB really.

    • The cheapest I see SN770 2TB is $202.00.
Why get that instead of this?

      • $188 Amazon US & DE, will return for cheaper at Amazon UK soon enough, likely below $180.

The answer to rest is that it's faster. You really should be looking at solid PCIE 4.0 drives in this price range now.

    • +2

Do not get literally any PCIE 4.0 drive. There are plenty of 4.0 drives worse than this.

SSD prices are doing the limbo

    • +3

It's finally bottoming out IMO, how low can you go? Soon I will buy SSD for my toilet

      • +5

Is it compatible with the PowerSkid 5?

      • What are you storing in your toilet?!

        • Y'know… the usual shit

  • I'm pretty sure these don't use the Phoenix controller anymore. I think it's Elpis now.

    • The 1TB a got a couple of weeks ago from Shopping Exp has the Phoenix controller.

any non NVMe m.2 SSD drives on sale

  • +3

Anyone seen any good deals on m.2 SATA recently? I know they're slow(er), but I've got one that needs replacing and the mobo doesn't support nvme

  • +1

Are these that much slower/worse in real use as an OS drive than a top Gen 4 drive like say the SN850x? This question is in an effort to stop my agonizing over m.2 drive selection - at least I've decided to buy a SK Hynix gold p31 for my laptop - for power efficiency and temperature reasons mainly….but I need a new OS drive for my Desktop)

    • +3

Yeah, you can save 1-second in booting up windows
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4p9QPOfIZo

The difference between 3 and 4 is massive but unnoticeable for the average user in most scenarios

However, I would still opportunistically make the upgrade to 4 especially if it was cheaper.

    • +1

As on OS drive, not much difference as Blitzfx pointed out. At the end, only you can decide:

      • Your preference is SN850X, but you probably already knew the performance difference with your usage won't really justify it.
      • 970 Evo Plus is being considered because there is a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) on this deal.

You make your own decision. If you want SN850X, think of it as 'buy it right or buy it twice'. If you want 970 Evo Plus 1TB, at this discounted price, I doubt you will lose much. Wait later for a better deal, that's fine too.

Now is a good time to buy SSDs anyway. I bought some SSDs last year so all these new prices are very nice.

  • I'm so ready to make the jump on one of these but can't help but wonder if prices will go lower.

    • It will, but how long are you willing to wait?

Previous best: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD $69 Delivered @ JW Computers eBay

$8 difference, you are not going to be rich with that $8.

      • I don't NEED one, I just want one for QOL. Hopefully that answers your question.

        • QOL for what?

          • @dogsryummy: Quality of Life (improvement). It's a pretty common term used for SSD purchases.

Do we all need PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs? Honestly, even PCIe gen 3 x4 SSDs are overkill for most of us. Do we do 8K or 4K/120fps video editing all the time to justify we "need" the SSD?

        • Obviously, the price is not low enough, otherwise you would have purchased already. $69 without needing that membership would be the next target OZBers would be aiming for.

Samsung is reacting to SN570 with the price, it is just strange they are not doing the price match using Samsung 980, but 970 Evo Plus. 970 Evo Plus is better than 980.

PS5 supports USB 3.2 gen 2 USB as well. So a 2TB NVMe SSD for $115 or 4TB version for $229 or less (to be used with USB) has zero interest to PS5 owners?
We just live with external USB HDDs I guess.

    • +2

Not our problem you're tech illiterate. Live and learn loser

    • +1

yes because that is the only use for SSD's….

      This is ozbargain. Not ozplaystation.

  • This or SN770 for a storage drive? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/776229

    • SN770

    • If you have a PCIe gen 4 x4 slot, SN770. If it is for a PCIe gen 3 x4 m.2 slot, 970 EVO Plus.

  • +1

Just bought one of these to add to my DS918+. Too cheap not to.

  • argh i need more storage in my gaming pc… or i just need to stop having so many games installed…. that would be the cheaper option….

  • Can someone confirm if this is compatible with the Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-53)?
