    Great find OP!

Judging by how these ssd prices are dropping so fast, I am really hopeful to see $50/TB by end of year haha

    It doesn't work!

Student Beans voucher. Doesn’t work for me.

Must be a registered user for Studentbean/Student Edge and have an active cookie session from portal to use code. Cookie session is canceled by shopback session as well.

  • Why are these so cheap now?

    • +4

Probably a combination of their (now) reasonably well known 0E errors (https://nascompares.com/2023/02/02/samsung-980-pro-970-evo-p…)

and that PCIe 4.0 drives are getting cheaper/more common, with PCIe 5.0 already announced etc.

For those that suggest a firmware update will fix the errors, there seems to be conflicting anecdotal evidence, with some suggesting they already had the updated firmware installed when facing issues. That and so many drives facing a premature death, along with Samsung also jumping onboard swapping out components for inferior ones (https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/08/samsung-seemingly-ca…) I'm just disappointed in them generally.

      Reddit discussion ~8mo. back: https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/x8arle/psa_sam…

      • Was about to pull the trigger, no thanks. Pain in the rectum to take it out of my laptop and rather not have it die.

        • Yeah it certainly put me off, and I had already bought it last year at double the price. Not that other manufacturers haven't changed components too, but it's the sudden and rapidly advancing 0E errors I don't care for. That and I never want to have to bother with RMAing an OS drive with personal info on it.

          • @thatnewtechsmell: I've just checked mine and nothing greater than > 0 yet… some are saying even with the new firmware they are dieing… Agreed lots of personal info that can be comprimised for an RMA.

            • @R3XNebular: For the 0E errors, unless it reached read only mode, before that, you can erase the data prior to sending it to Samsung for RMA. Most of my SSD failures are sudden death. Those, zero chance to wipe the data. My Sandisk SSD which has 0E equivalent error (unusable / bad cells, cell re-allocated) within 1 year. It has not reached enough bad blocks to be applicable for warranty service.

Obviously, this 0E problem is bad. However, if Samsung is flexible on RMA for 0E issue, then it might ease the pain a bit. In reality, all SSDs degrade in quality as time goes on. So, is it such a good idea to have a lot of SSDs out of warranty?

While it was quite annoying for my previous Samsung RMA warranty (needed to send the SSD back to Samsung), Samsung RMA team did send me a much better SSD with 2X the storage capacity.

Another interesting thing, the "K" brand, low end QLC SATA SSDs, they come with pre-marked bad blocks (so could be cheaper grade / lower binned NAND) and QLC's limited write cycle meant the SSD health drops from 100% to 99% with the SSD filled to 50%.

      • Isn't the 0E error limited to the 980 pro?

        • Slightly dramatic title aside, the title of the first article linked is literally:
'Samsung SSDs Dying! 980 Pro, 990, 970 EVO PLUS, PM9A1 and More Reporting Failures – Everything We Know So Far!'

        • +1

Samsung has not come out and provide a full list. But, unofficially, this is people's review (mostly based on data from Chinese owners) on affected SSDs:

          • Pascal controller: Samsung 990 Pro
          • Elpis controller: Samsung 980 Pro, Samsung PM9A1, Samsung 980, Samsung 970 Evo Plus
          • Metis controller: Samsung 870 Evo
          • Phoenix controller: Samsung 970 Evo, Samsung 970 Evo Plus (earlier batches)

Thing is, as long as there is 1 example of 0E error being reported, that model of SSDs gets added to the Chinese forum list.

        • But they using the same nand.

          • @Richardc: No, not the same NAND. Using the Chinese forum list (which NASCompare copied), a variety of Samsung NAND types are used for those SSDs.

            • @netsurfer: Would you believe that Samsung made different nand at the same time for different ssd? They just binned nand for different ssd.

              • @Richardc: If you based on the "theory" from English based sites (assuming they don't use that Chinese site), then the list is much shorter and you "could" argue it is the latest NAND type.

However, if you accept the Chinese forum list, then we are looking at Samsung 64L 3D V-NAND, 92L 3D V-NAND, 128L 3D-VNAND, 136L 3D V-NAND. There is NO WAY they are the same NAND but different bin. They are different generations of NAND technology.

Basically, you need to decide whether you prefer to go with the "NAND" theory or you prefer to play it safe and go with Samsung SSDs had this issue for years (the Chinese forum's list) so firmware upgrade all of them. Samsung doesn't want to come clean on this issue. The user data on the Web is all over the place. There is one example of a Samsung PM9A1 with 3600TBW+ with 0 0E issue, but CrystalDiskInfo obviously has to drop its health rating to 10% health. Another one with much less TBW but a large amount of 0E.

Believe me, I'd much rather it is just one NAND type. However, it is better to accept the issue could be wide spread (even though I am still cynical about that large list) and prepare for the worst. I do have a large number of Samsung SSDs. WD and Crucial SSDs also need firmware updates. One of my Kingston SSDs is known to have high failure rate did die recently.

      • Bought one recently from Centrecom with manufacturing dated 22/04/23, though they shall fix 0E issue by then

        • It would have a new firmware. However, technically, Samsung only indicated 980 Pro and 990 Pro are affected. Furthermore, the 990 Pro issue isn't actually 0E. So it comes down to these:

          • Do you trust Samsung that this is indeed a firmware issue?
          • Clearly, a lot of us don't install Samsung Magician normally, but moving forward, should we do that a.s.a.p. when we get a new Samsung SSD? How about the WD equivalent, Crucial equivalent, Seagate and Kingston ones? None of the SSD makers currently have a clean / perfect record on first firmware being perfect. WD SN850, for example, even with the AMD chipset PCIe gen 4 x4 slow down fix, it was done for certain batches. Then, when new batches arrive, the issue re-surface for those new batches.

At this rate, Samsung (actually ALL SSD makers) should create apps to upgrade firmware on Mac and PS5.

          • @netsurfer: Just checked, no newer firmwares for the 970 Evo Plus. I suppose this means it's either fixed or wasn't a significant issue on those drives.
