Telstra Alternative - Plan Rising Again

14 months ago I managed to lock in a $50 a month plan with Telstra with the help of OzBargain. 12 months later it was upped to $68 and now it's getting upped again to $72.

I would stay but they have been a nightmare to deal with while I was on the $50 a month plan, constantly overcharging and almost every month I had to query bills so I plan to leave out of principal.

Any reasonable alternatives?

I need full Telstra network as I work as a tradie in very remote places throughout Australia. I also need 60+gb (preferably unlimited) as I found I regularly went over 40gb.

Boost Mobile? They use the full Telstra network including 5G. Speeds are capped to 150/250Mbps on the lower plans. $35/28 days for 45GB.

    • Will be changing to $35 for 25GB, or $45 for 35GB

      • $300 sim works out to $1.154/GB, so would equate to ~$69/60GB. This is the cheapest cost option Boost have for ongoing

        • so from what I can gather I can basically get

          • Boost 90gb @ $70 (28 day prepaid plan)

          or

          • stay on Telstra 180gb @ $72 (post paid)

It is a monopoly for anyone living in regional or remote Australia

            @jmmelb:

It is truely a monopoly for anyone living in regional or remote Australia

To be fair it does cost a lot of money to provide and pay for staff to maintain that sort of connectivity to remote low-density areas.

If you are happy to pay for $68 per month, why not join JB HiFi Mobile Plan (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/upfront-mobile-plans) at $69 plan? Your plan will be fixed at $69 per month for 24 months, also getting120GB Data per month PLUS $500 JB HiFi Gift Card as well,

    • The terms and conditions seem to say a Telstra port in is not eligible for the voucher unless I'm reading incorrectly.

      • Port out and Port In, good for 24 months :)

  • If you sign up through JB there's no price rises I'm on one ! And my Mrs through telstra direct two so far !

  • I hear Boost are releasing a 350gb plan for $350 in July?
I'd be jumping on that if i could

Month to month plans are a double edged sword. We thought they were good because they stopped locking us into contracts allowing us to leave whenever we want, but they can also raise the prices whenever they want now.

    • People are getting phones with these month-to-month plans that are not on a contract specifically, but you pay a certain amount each month for the phone and plan just like the old days… except now the telco can increase the plan's price during the "contract".

      • Yes, but you can still leave whenever you want and just have to pay off the rest of the phone with no penalty. Yes you are paying retail price for the phone/tablet and you probably could have saved up to $100 on a recent iPhone or a bit more on an old one, but it's effectively an interest free loan on it so it's not all bad.

        • It's probably not so bad if an iPhone is what you want but for Android users, you will be kicking yourself because they get nice discounts during their life. If the phone plan increases in price and you want to leave, it could be a shock to have to pay such a large amount in one go for some people.

  • jb or good guys to beat them

  • Telstra $62 plan is 50GB.(was $58 for 40GB)

I am looking around as well. The only good thing with Telstra is if you go over the data limit it just slows but you can still use it . Others seem to just cut your data off (so I have been advised).

  • Absolutely. Ditch Telstra. Always admin/account issues guaranteed. Get Boost one year plan, just pay once a year and it's done. Easy! You'd be surprised how much data you get as it all 'rolls over' each month in effect (12 month plan…).

And 100% Telstra network, 0% Telstra trouble.

Don't be tempted by the 99.9% Telstra coverage deals as I've been stuck without coverage due to being in that 0.1% area!!!

    • FWIW I've had a Telstra pan for over 18 years and haven't had a single admin or account issue. I've changed plans many times and even changed from a staff plan to a personal plan.

    • They're on the Telstra Wholesale network though, which is incompatible with….

I need full Telstra network as I work as a tradie in very remote places throughout Australia.

EDIT: This is still the best "at a glance" comparison between Telstra Retail and Wholesale coverage that I've found. Scroll down a bit to the second map and have a play with the slider…..

  • Im with Telstra in East Gippsland regional Victoria but wanted a cheaper plan for my son.

    Kogan basically no service,

Boost sister tried for her son okay in some rural towns but not the out of town service like Telstra.

    Optus some service very patchy.

But eventually found Woolworths has very similar coverage to Telstra in drives around East Gippland, Victoria his plan $25 a month with 10% off one shop a month (do a one big shop and your ahead). Also trip to ACT a month ago he had similar service to me on the way there along the usual blackspots it dropped out about the same time as my phone.

  • One day Telstra might reach decent service levels in regional Victoria you cant go anywhere without encounting a blackspot.
