Diablo IV - Did You Buy It?

As per the title, the preload for Diablo IV is up, and the game launches for early access for deluxe/ultimate edition owners in just under 3 days. So my question is: Why the (profanity) is the game 110 for the standard, 140 for the deluxe, and 155 for the ultimate editions? There isn't even an alternative store you could purchase it for such as GMG, so how does Blizzard justify the price of two AAA games for their game that includes in game transactions?

Remade because I'm dumb and didn't properly check the dates for the poll.

Deluxe. The only game I am spending my time this year. Can't wait in two days.

    • -1

what about it are you keen on? what could they possibly improve on over D3?

      • -1

Nothing, D3 is the best game ever, a masterpiece, nothing comes near. Elden Ring, Zelda, Tetris etc.. all praise the best game ever made: Diablo the 3rd.

Seriously though.. different environment, different classes with different skills. So much too discover. I've been playing D3 for since 2015 (not the billion hours most people put into it, but multiple season level 70s) and I'm kinda done with it. You're not?

        • +27

Hot take. Diablo 2 runs rings around D3.

          • +3

@Canberralad92: Hardly a hot take considering Diablo 2 is one of the most beloved/critically acclaimed games of all time

            • +7

@ojwhop: I'm watching a Let's Play of D4 now. Isn't this type of gameplay primitive and out of date?

What exactly is the basic gameplay loop?

Run through an enormous map of corridors as highlighted enemies approach and wait for you to press a button to dispatch them. If you don't do it fast enough they attack.

They drop loot and you level up stats and equipment to keep up with the gradually more powerful enemies.

Approach an NPC and press a button to talk and advance the story. Schlep over here to get this key to unlock the door, over and over.

This just seems tedious and trivial to me.

The environment looks great but there's no immersion due to the view. You don't have to aim or use much skill. You just run through and clear dungeon after dungeon.

There doesn't seem to be much problem solving nor varied gameplay.

Am I missing something or is this just a matter of taste?

              • -3

@Scrooge McDuck: "Everybody else who thinks [insert massively popular global phenomenon] is great is missing something. I am very smart and have unique insights into the workings of things. It can't possibly be that I have unusual preferences. You might think you enjoy it but I'm here to tell you you're wrong"

                • +5

@GrueHunter: Is this supposed to be some kind of point?

If [insert massively popular global phenomenon] is such a massively popular global phenomenon, is it that hard to write down two or three things that made it such a massively popular global phenomenon.

Seems like a strawman to misrepresent their reply as "I am very smart and it is wrong to enjoy things I don't enjoy". They are simply asking the fans what makes it so enjoyable. They broke down the game rather accurately from the parts that they understand and expressed their subjective thoughts about it while being open to rebuttal and asking if they are missing something the fans could expound on.

Not sure how a sarcastic snarky clapback helps anyone at all.

                  • @cadwalader: lol, why would you come to an OzBargain forum to try to find out if there's anything fun about the Diablo gameplay loop?

The answer is implicit, if it WASN'T fun, why would it and related titles like POE be outrageously successful for over a decade played by millions of people across all cultures, genders and demographics? It's literally a stupid question and the question itself is a strawman. Here's a hot take, just download POE and play it, if you like it you'll probably like Diablo. If you don't you probably won't like Diablo.

But hey I'll bite, I like the story, I like the artistic feel of the environments, models and animations not to mention the great sound effects. I love the addictive chase of unique items and sets, I love cooperative gaming with friends and strangers alike, and the crafting and trading system means there's still plenty to do for a long time after you're done with the base game. Most of all I love that it's not a gaming style that causes me stress, I can bang out a couple of hours of diablo or POE while a little high or drunk without thinking too hard or getting salty with the game. It's just easy casual fun.

I also really like turn-based strategy games, but they are the opposite, they take a lot of strategic thinking and can easily become frustrating when things aren't going well. Sometimes you just don't need that shit after working a 10 hour day in whatever salt mine that employs you…

                    • @deelaw:

You see here, you're assuming that everyone is operating from your perspective and viewing the world through your lens that you would think something referring to something you know is a stupid question. I genuinely do not know what POE is.

Why get so defensive about a question like this? Its not a hostile or loaded question. Its just someone who tried it, tried to find something to like about it and was wondering what they were missing out that so many people enjoyed? Wouldn't this be an opportunity to spread your positive feelings about the game or is everyone so cynical that you think a question like that could be a strawman or a lead up to an attack on something you liked. Not your fault if you are, the world is kind of (profanity) and its worse online, but the language and premise leans to a genuine question more than anything.

But hey I'll bite, I like the story, I like the artistic feel of the environments, models and animations not to mention the great sound effects. Its no bait for you to bite =) This is helpful and I can see where our enjoyment could differ and I'm not going to drag you down into an argument about subjective gaming preferences like you thought I would. I saw a couple of videos and the story is indeed quite compelling. I did enjoy the crafting aspect of diablo but I found it a bit grindy, can see how people would like to uncover more and more though. What relaxes one person might not interest another. The relaxing bit is not new aspect to me but I didn't think diablo scratched that itch but the way you described it to me makes complete sense.

Personally, I'm more of a simulator combat kind of person. Not too fast and too many axes like fighter planes but nice slow ones like tanks and planes. Other than that I do like grand strategy games, I appreciate the not-stressing-not-thinking too hard and there are some platforms that allows me to switch my brain off and chill like you said.

                      • @cadwalader: Well I would also add that if you find the crafting side of things to be grindy, I dare say you're doing it wrong. I can't speak at length with D4 as I've only just started playing it, but with POE there are a lot of players that have been rinsing that game for > 10 years. If you're trying to get a particular item with a specific roll, don't bother, just ask other players or hit the trading website. In about 2 weeks of playing POE from an absolute newbie I had a game-killer build with all requisite items except one, all from being gifted by the community or trading items that were gifted to me. Doing that without assistance would likely have taken well over a year of solid gaming, which I do not have the time nor patience for.

I'm not sure that D4 works as well in that regard, as there doesn't seem to be a global chat (or trading website) where people dump their unwanted items to help newbies, so you might be relying more upon building a network of fellow players to share loot around with. But who knows, I haven't really looked into this as I'm having enough fun with the solo experience so far.

                        • @deelaw: I'm still not sure what POE is to be honest. I was referring to D3. I did enjoy playing D2 at internet cafes with friends for a tiny bit before Dota came about. There was some trading in D3 with my immediate friend group but we also weren't particularly sure about the meta about weapons (as far as I remember) and didn't grind particularly hard to have some stunning stuff.

That is certainly helpful advice (which I would not have gotten had I not talked about what people liked and disliked about the game( and I will keep that in mind if my gaming group decides to pick up D4.

        • +1

I finished the campaign once and never touched it again..

      • +8

what could they possibly improve on over D3?

Lol, have you ever played D3? Especially in the first few years of its release?

Anything that Diablo 3 "got right" was solely due to the demands/feedback of the userbase who vocally opposed about 50% of Blizzard's initial design choices.
It was in no way an improvement over either Diablo 2 or the APRG genre at the time of its release.

Diablo IV might just get it right this time with the benefit of fixing and polishing D3 for a decade but still… pre-ordering is for mindless NPCs who can't put 2 and 2 together and wonder why the gaming industry is a sea of mediocrity these days.

        • +1

          Absolutely correct.

Gameplay and quality comes behind "ExClUsIvEs" and graphics these days.

This all started when fools accepted the change from "games as a product" to "games as a service" and ruined it for everyone.

          • +2

@imurgod: They're welcome to play some Nintendo games, where you get the full game, as a product.

Sure there might be DLC, but in a few months time that adds some genuine additional content to a fully fledged game.

            Zelda TOTK. GOTY

            • @diddy50: Yes but ninty games are kids stuff.

I'm general, we opted to rent and not own.

            • +1

@diddy50: I would but the performance is terrible, 30 fps is just no good in 2023

        • So it got better? I never went back and finished it

    • +1

WHat's the difference between deluxe and normal?

  • +11

so how does Blizzard justify the price

What makes you think they need to ?

    • +17

True, it seems I've forgotten that regardless of what they do, people will still eat up the dogshit decisions they make as long as they get to play their games. Forgot about that.

      • +2

Just cause you think its a shit decision doesn't mean others do… 100000's are happy to pay top $ the day the game comes out or pre-order just so they can toss one off telling their mates they did..

Some flogs will keep buying the in game garbo ( "skins" and shit like that… or packs that include stickers for their guns in shooter games, when you cant even see them ever.

        example: Published November 2011

Call of Duty Pulls In More than Three-Quarters of a Billion Dollars in Five Days, And Other Insane Numbers

Life-to-date retail sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded $6 billion worldwide, which makes Call of Duty one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world. "

        • +3

My brother in christ, you are on a site about bargain hunting. Do you not see the juxtaposition of trying to defend a billion dollar company's decision to overcharge you relative to the base price for equivalent games? And your example means nothing, Activision Blizzard own large IP's that for many, there are very few notable alternatives, so when it comes down to it, there's the simple choice of either overpaying or not playing. This just means that those who purchased their games value the enjoyment of the game more than the fact that they are overcharged - but does not change the fact that they are being overcharged.

Paying for a game because you want to play it, and being (profanity) over by a greedy company's decision making are not mutually exclusive.

          • +2

            @GachaGamer:

Paying for a game because you want to play it, and being (profanity) over by a greedy company's decision making are not mutually exclusive.

This. I'm buying it but yes, it's too much money. The pricing for PC is insane especially because it feels like a monopoly position being only on Battle.net. Console is a better luckily for price.

            • +1

              @Gamedeals:

but yes, it's too much money

              …for you.

I, on the other hand, can do basic arithmetic.

If I'm happy to spend $6 on a coffee that's gone in five minutes, or drive ten minutes, park, then spend, say, $25 on a ticket and snacks to go watch the latest Marvel bore that lasts just a couple of hours and then it's over, how much do you think I should be willing to happily spend on something that magically appears in my living room with the click of a button and which will give me at least ten times that amount of enjoyment, and so will each of my two kids?

              • +1

@GrueHunter: That's an extremely good point and 100% agree with you. Value is in the eye of the one buying, not the people judging. I shouldn't have use the word "too" as it's not. It's expensive in comparison to other AAA games, however, this game should last you well over 100+ hours without any updates so not sure how well that argument holds up.

          • @GachaGamer:

            And your example means nothing

It does… Open the other eye. it means people are happy to pay what ever price to play the game… quite a few of them in 5 days to be honest. Looking through this thread, quite a few here couldnt give a shit how much it is, they are buyin'.

            YMMV

          • +1

@GachaGamer: It's the cost of 2 nights out. If $100 is what it costs to save potential $thousands then it's in the spirit of OzBargaining IMO. I'll somehow try to deal with my feelings of funding a square centimeter of Bobby's next yacht while I'm exploding corpses as a necromancer.

          • @GachaGamer: its microsoft now btw

    • Inflation lol

    • I think microsoft has been making money for at least a few years, probably just wanted to continue that trent into the future.

  • +3

Bought the standard edition but will be upgrading to Deluxe for early access. I absolutely loved the betas/server slam and i've spent thousands and thousands of hours playing D3 (and D2) so I know I'll get my moneys worth.

    • +4

'i've spent thousands and thousands of hours playing D3 (and D2)' This is why I'm not buying it. Love it but without the grind you feel stuck at newbie and the Grind is too addictive.

  • +4

I'm redeeming it through MSI then will just sell it. I've never even seen the gameplay lol

  • +3

They dont have to justify anything, it's a free market. I'm not buying cuz it's too rich for me and D3 sucked initially so will wait and see how D4 goes after 2 months before I even consider buying.

    • +2

Seriously, the way games are released as beta-testing ready these days.. I can’t believe anyone still pays up front pricing for the privilege!

  • +1

I'd rather play it on PC but my hardware is ageing and it's cheaper on console, if I get it will likely be on PS5

  • +14

after playing the free weekends i bought zelda instead.

    • +8

Zelda - $69 and no bullshit in game store.

  • +2

Getting it for free with new graphics card but was going to buy the Deluxe edition anyway for early access.

  • +1

Re the "why": Because people pay it happily, before the game is even released.

Visit r/patientgamers for some inspiration and guidance

    • Or just enjoy a game when it comes out and don't let a subreddit tell you what to do.. or do. Whatever makes you happy really.

Normally I wait but loved the beta weekends and am ready for a new Diablo.

      • +1

        You have single-handedly destroyed gaming

  • +11

I didnt and I wont… these leeching transactions in video games needs to stop.

    • Wasnt there some legal gig overseas with one of the I think soccer games which was banned due to ingame purchases as it was illegal for young kids to buy stuff like that … few years ago now… memory is fuzzy

      • Recently they said something about making games with those gambling elements Adult's Only or 15+ or something

      • +1

You are thinking of FIFA in Belgium but the game itself isn't banned, just the microtransaction part (FIFA points).

  • +3

There isn't even an alternative store you could purchase it for such as GMG

That's why they can charge whatever they want on PC.

I got it on PS5 and it was less than $60 after cashback/discount plus I can sell it if the game doesn't live up to my expectations.

  • +8

Good to see 10-20 people will not be playing it. That's less 2 seconds on the queue for us.

    • -2

Enjoy half the content being behind additional paywalls

      • You got this info from cabramatta? Lol.

I have been playing since 9am.

  • +1

    no

  • +1

so how does Blizzard justify the price of two AAA games for their game that includes in game transactions?

People like Diablo, and some will pay anything. And Battlenet has the monopoly on PC sales, so they can set the price. Don't like it? Vote with your wallet.

  • +2

won't be buying it, I enjoy D3 the past few years but D3 at release was bad. I'm expecting D4 would be the same and knowing Blizzard, they would find some scummy way to monetize the game. The recent events with overwatch 2 has made me lose a lot of faith in Blizzard so I'll skip the series altogether. plenty of games to play anyway.

    • I agree and I am still stupid to buy D4 on PC cause I love the franchise.

Thing is, Blizzard is going downhill every year… don't know how they can bring their reputation back to the good days. Profits over community…..

      • You buying it feeds into why they won't change.

        • +1

They're a huge corporation, they won't change whether or not the game sells.

They got flack for OW2, Heroes of the Storm, WC3 remake, Diablo immortal, law suits in antitrust and sexual harassment and the list goes on……

If these negative complaints and lawsuits isn't going to 'change' them back to those glory days, me NOT buying a copy of D4 or alot of people not buying D4 isn't going to make that happen either…..

  • lol a gacha player has a problem with people paying for a blizzard game

  • Yes, unfortunately I am a Diablo sucker from D1. Sucks that PC never got any pre-release sales……..

    Oh well

  • +5

Played since D1 back in University days and I think I got every other game on release day but giving D4 a wide pass. Reasons include:
    - Blizzard being the shell of a company they were initially and the constant scandals and issues
    - Gameplay for D3 was fun, but storyline sucked ass completely compared to D1 and D2
    - Not enough spare time to actually play it compared to games already on my hall of shame list from 6 years of study
    - Not enough spare money to justify those prices

  • +1

There isn't even an alternative store you could purchase it for such as GMG, so how does Blizzard justify the price of two AAA games for their game that includes in game transactions?

You’ve answered your own question. They have zero competition, it’ll probably be over a year until it’s on special. They have a product, people want it, and there’s no way to get it cheaper. That’s exactly how they justify it.

  • +3

Exactly 24 hours… so nice of them to launch it on a Friday at 9am for us in AU :)

  • Is it true you need PS+ to play local couch co-op on PS4/5?

    • We'll find out soon.

Players believe it's always online for the MMO features so will need PS plus because Sony requires it for all online gaming.

      • -1

Unless things have changed in the recent past, Sony requires a PS+ sub if the game itself requires a purchase. For example, Fortnite and CoD (the free one - I forgot the name, Modern Warfare?) do not require an active PS+ sub.

  • +3

    Would only play on pc
    Not paying $120
Got enough other games to play anyway

  • +1

Been a long time Diablo fan and I have been playing D3 since it's open beta. Recently did my first GR150 and hit p2000 for the first time.

Gonna pass on D4's release and will likely only get it for the single player campaign when on sale provided YouTube doesn't ruin everything for me.

Luckily for me, I still have non seasonal goals in D3.

    • +5

lol. I give it 2 hours before you buckle and buy it

  • Once Microsoft buys Activision Blizzard King, eventually it will make its way onto Xbox Game Pass, so that's when I'll pick it up. I might even go back to play D2 and D3 again once that happens. But too busy with Tears of the Kingdom now.

    • -1

That deal got nuked by the UK as far as I know.

      • still underway, MS is appealing the decision and they seem to have plenty of grounds to overturn it.

  • Anyone else still mainly playing D2/D2R instead? lol

    • +2

Just did D2R/D3 in lead up to D4, though still contemplating refunding d4 deluxe. D2R was a lot more fun than D3.

The beta test weekends were fun, but like D3… its definitely not the same game, and I detest the micro transaction / battlepass style revenue garbage that everyone's putting in games now, and in this case when you've already paid a significant premium.

  • +4

It's expensive, but given the amount of hours people spend on a game like this it is actually incredibly cheap entertainment even at those hideous prices. For many this will work out at a fraction of a dollar an hour. Really they don't need to justify the price, it is the buyer that determines whether the price is right or not and given the amount of purchases already and expected over the next few weeks I would say they got the price about right even if I feel it is too much.

  • +2

Im tempted. I mostly skipped D3 but Ive got a lot of nostalgia for 1 & 2.

The price doesnt hugely bother me by itself, but the comparison between PC price & console price annoys me. Its hard to justify a 80% or more markup on one platform vs the others.

Trying to work out if theres a way to discount the PC price by paying via BattleNet/Blizzard Balance cards that can be bought retail

  • -3

Too expensive. Not willing to spend more than 30bucks on it.

  • Got it with gpu purchase, standard ed. Was not looking forward to it though as I had so many games piled up. But now that I have it, might as well finish it off playing from launch.

  • I got the code for free with my 4090 but I've never played a RPG in my life. I'm thinking of redeeming it to give it a go but would I need to know any backstory or play previous releases to know what's going on?

    • +3

No. Don't need any back story at all. Can just jump right in. It's not really a traditionally strong story driver RPG. It has a story but that's only a very small part of it. More so just a dungeon crawler / hack and slash game.

    • -3

Give it to me plz. I'm a poor rpg player.

    • +1

Just watch the cut scenes from all the previous series. It pretty much sums up the whole story https://youtu.be/mhtH0x7IBPk

  • +3

Just finished work for the day and now getting prepped for tomorrow.

Have tomorrow off work and a 3 day pass from the wife. So will be playing ~20 hours a day for the next 3 days. Can't wait!

    • 20 hour gaming sessions? Go you lol. Don't forgot to eat, shit and sleep.

  • I’ve never played a Diablo, what’s it’s deal?

    • +1

It's an almost perfect skinner box. The game rewards time invested rather than skill with just enough in game rewards to keep the player addicted.

  • +5

Deluxe edition because I know I'll get more then enough entertainment value out of it to it's cost, that's all gaming (and other hobbies) comes down to for me.

Same as going to see a movie, is that cost worth the time of entertainment? that's a personal choice, I'll get hundreds of hours (if not thousands) out of D4 as I have got thousands of hours out of D2 and D3 so the cost is worth it to me.

Each to their own as to what your entertainment to cost value is though, shouldn't judge people because they get entertainment value out of something you don't.

  • +2

Wasn't going to but mate didn't want to play on his own, and its a good excuse to cut back on smokes as it cost the same as 3 packs anyway.

  • +6

Both wife and I got it as we are long time Diablo fans. Got D1 myself for my 15th birthday and that got me hooked. kids off to school tomorrow at 8:30am then we can both get some good Diablo 4 time in until near 3pm.

    • haha same here mate, school at 9am and then GAME ON!
      enjoy!

    • married a gamer, you got life all figured out huh

  • +5

First time in a while I am not buying it at launch price. Cannot stand the large price difference between PC and console. Completely unjustifiable to have the difference.

    • +2

Especially as Blizzard built their little empire on PC gamers I reckon.

  • Not yet, too expensive and my understanding is they've locked endgame dungeons behind keys that you only get from world events that only show up at certain times or something like that?

  • +1

There's two main reasons I haven't bought Diablo IV:
    1. I still vividly remember the Diablo III launch. It was 3 days of basically not being able to play it, with the auth servers being overloaded. Blizzard have had this issue many times again since, and still haven't learned or acted to fix this for large launches - it's been an issue for multiple WoW expansion launches, it's been an issue for multiple Overwatch launches. I don't trust them to get things sorted in the first few days.
    2. I recently bought Tears of the Kingdom and a secondhand copy of Metroid Prime which I haven't even started yet. That's a good few months of gameplay for me there already.

Hell yeah I did and yep I paid up to get access tomorrow, so pumped!
Oh and cost wise it is expensive but I remind myself of a few things:
1.) Some games almost cost this much 20 years ago (ignoring inflation!)
2.) I now actually earn money
3.) I'll likely play 10,000 hours of it so it's cheap
