Adding Extra Seats to a 5-Seater SUV - Possible?

Hi.. I was curious if it's possible (legally and mechanically) to add one/ two extra seats in a 5-seater SUV e.g. Forester (or RAV4). If yes, how much does it cost and how does one go about it? Thanks!

generally no unless the vehicle has preapproved seats add on for passengers (such as vans). very tight regulations if you haven't bought a 7 seater you won't be able to just add two seats

You used to be able to get ‘dicky seats’ to put in the back of wagons. Safety rules now mean that it’s unlikely to be possible unless your vehicle has a factory 7 seat option. It MAY be possible if there is an option in an overseas market but not Aussie.

If you do, it will need engineering certificate and registration update.

    It won’t be cheap

I remember riding in the boot as a kid growing up. Pretty sure we went to the airport once

a 70/80s station wagon boot was essentially space for 3 kids to travel safely in

No mention of Subaru or RAV4 on this site.

  • If the vehicle make/model isn't sold anywhere in the world with a third row, it's a hard no.

  • You might be able to pick up a 2nd hand Toyota Avensis for $3-4000?
I recall a dicky seat cost half that @ 1999

Putting seats in a crumple zone is probably not a good idea.

    • does that mean sedan is safer than hatchback

      • Yes, sedans have larger crumple zones.

  • Road legal or paddock basher legal?
    Mechanically anything is possible.
If you want to drive it on a public road, then it will be quicker/cheaper/easier to just buy another car that suits your intended purpose.

  • ha
    no.

    Unless it's a troopie.
