If you don't have AfterPay you will have to sign up to get the 10% off, but from what I remember it is pretty easy and only takes maybe 10-15 minutes or less and is worth it to save $50 off an already recently reduced price on QNAP devices IMO.

The last sale for this model was $481.50, so this beats it by a little and is about $100 cheaper than it was recently, so I thought I'd better pull the trigger and finally sort out my storage.

It has 1x 2.5Ge Ethernet + 1x gigabit Ethernet ports and 3x USB including 1x Gen 3.2 and apparently many apps included for a broad range of use cases.

For those wondering about drive capacity, I believe it can handle HDDs of at least 18TB and most likely even 20-24TB as well (saw a guy posting this on a forum in regards to another QNAP model). The reason I can't say for certain is that it's very hard to find online even on their website for some stupid reason, but as I understand it, capacity is constantly being updated by firmware as HDD's get bigger.

I have some 14TB and 18TB Western Digital externals from the last big Ozbargain discounts on these and IIRC they are supposed to be easily shuckable and I think they will install fine, from what I can tell.

I only really need it for movies and other media, including hosting ROMs for emulation and some Steam games etc, but I figured it would be safer to get the model that has 4GB rather than 1GB because apparently this can be limiting for some scenarios and functions. Besides which, the lower model 4Bay by QNAP (431k) is about the same price at the moment anyway, so that made the choice easier.

I hope this helps someone needing a relatively cheap all in one solution to their network storage.

    has a fast Ethernet

I did not think anything would be made with 100Mb every again.

Are you sure it's not Gbe or 2.5Gbe?
    Is probably
    1x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Port (2.5G/1G/100M)
    +
    1x Gigabit Ethernet Port (1G/100M)

    • I fixed the post to give more details on the ethernet ports.

I didn't realise 'fast ethernet' was referring to a particular tier of speed. I just wanted to indicate that the ports were fast enough for most users needs.

    • Lots of TVs have 100Mb ports still !

        yes aware of that

but for a NAS or any computing level device would be wildy unusual

Here, you will find one RJ45 and one 2.5 (2.5G|1G|100M) Gigabit Ethernet port.

honestly, i prob would get this, id stay away from qnap and go synology , you can google the reasons why. They had some decent units for $799.

thats just my opinion i dont have one but did do some research when getting my bro an xmas present and got him the Synology DS1621+ with 2 x WD RED 16TB's and he loves it.
main reasons were UI/UX is better and less prone to malware and randsome wear…. i prob would have gotten the one down for $799 if i had my time over but eh hes happy with his game and 6 bays gives him room to expand, he was horing like 8 hhds which is so 90 90s and once had a ds323 dual bay nas

My moto is do it once do it properly.

oh and the support factor came into it , Qnap are shit house compared to them from what i read so not supporting them but more over if they do have an issue dont want him stranded.

      randsome wear 🤣💀

      • it's very randy
        .

    • I get what you are saying because I read about Synology having better software too, but the price jumps up to nearly double and I just couldn't spend that much for what is essentialy the same thing anyway.

I figured once I initially work out the software, I will probably not need to tinker with it much afterwards as I'm only using it for basic serving, I'm definitely not an enthusiast, so my thinking was that it was worth saving several hundred dollars, even if its apps are a bit more cumbersome.

In regards to online, Its a nice feature but I doubt I would ever use it myself. I also read people saying neither brand is bullitproof in this regard and it's probably not a good idea anyway.

Read someone suggest a Virtual Machine as a safe solution for online use? But honestly I don't have a clue about all that stuff anyway.

Here, you will find one RJ45 and one 2.5

When you wanna sound smart learn what RJ45 means first

id probably say to people , are you happy with where your life is and going? if so continue behaving like that, or do you want something more? then id prob change something. but one day you will realise your not in a good spot and its a bit late to do anything about it.

    all the best.

That's deep. I feel like my NAS purchase decision is a crossroads in my life.

Same here, tossing between Synology and Qnap from 3-4 years now 🤣

        • I'm just gonna go full DIY nas whenever I end up building/upgrading to a new pc and using my old parts for it. Maybe replace the cpu with an apu so I can use the gpu slot for even more hdd/ssds.

          • @JerraJones: That's my eventual plan when I have more space.

For now, i'm replacing my microserver with something quieterb and some sort of 4 bay NAS will suffice.

      • "That's deep." Especially from a shape shifting killing machine
        .

Maybe the use of a QNAP prevents Skynet.
