Changes to Uber One Membership (Commences 5 July 2023)

I received an email today about changes to Uber One memberships. These changes will take place from 5 July 2023.

  • 10% off rides is being replaced. Instead you will earn a 5% Uber Credit from rides that can be used for future rides or Uber Eats orders.

  • $0 Delivery Fee for non-restaurant orders will apply to orders over $40 (previously $20).

Will this make a difference to you, will you keep your membership?

    Lollll

More changes so that they can collect more money. What else is new? They seem to have been reducing "benefits" forever to try and figure out what the market will tolerate.

Yep, all about increasing their profitability even further, in their most profitable market in the world.

Driver revenue has stayed stagnant for over 5 years. Earnings have dropped significantly due to a 40% increase in costs. These muppets exploit absolutely everyone.

        These muppets exploit absolutely everyone.

I've been saying that here for the last 7 years.

It wouldn't surprise me if Dan got kickbacks when he pushed through the legislation to legalise them after they had been operating illegally here for years.

I won't cancel because I make enough back from not paying delivery fees for food.

You only listed the non-restaurant change, here's the full thing from the email:

To unlock $0 Delivery Fee, the minimum order size for non-restaurant orders is changing to $40.
The minimum order size for Uber One restaurant orders remains unchanged at $20.
    Service Fee still applies.

What other changes are you referring to? As per the email, everything else remains "unchanged" and "still applies".

Apologies, didn't notice you had an image of the full email attached!

cheaper to cook your own food…

"9 out of 10 food delivery companys HATE this trick."

        • +2

It's amazing how few Gen Zs know this little secret…

          • @jv: haha yeah I get it, I don't cook though so uberone makes sense for me

Tbh I’d be happy to pay a reasonable delivery fee on all my orders if the food prices on the Uber app weren’t as inflated compared to the normal in-store prices

Uber would do anything but decrease their preposterous commissions + service fees.
And for that reason I am out, until they rope me back in with something like Spend $40 get $30 back 🤣

Uber offers not just delivery system but also they basically give any restaurant who wants it a "free" online ordering website and a "free" customer base. "Free" because the fees more than pay for it. A website has an upfront cost of a few thousand dollars and an online ordering system thousands more, then marketing costs thousands more still. Managing your own drivers alone costs many thousands a year for someone who knows how to do it, that kind of experience doesn't just appear out of nowhere, you have to pay the managers that know how to run a crew of drivers. Most restaurants don't want to pay those upfront and committed costs to have their own system, even if it would be cheaper for them in the long run compared to Uber Eats, plus they would end up owning their own system if they did it themselves. Uber Eats is fairly risk free in comparison, if no one orders form you then you don't really pay anything except the initial $500 fee, which includes all hardware and Uber Eats is happy to spread out over weekly instalments so any restaurant can afford to opt in. Uber will even help teach you how to plug your menu in so even a clueless little restaurant could get in with their hand held by Uber.

  • I was wondering why there's a huge number of "benefits" for June.

I'm going to cancel, although only because I'm buying a car. Uber One has been great while I haven't had one but I spend so much on Uber services that it made justifying buying a car a really easy decision.

  • I would cancel if I still had it. $40 of food for a single person is insane, even with the marked up Uber Eats prices! Maybe their average customer is now couples and families so they don't care about single people anymore.

      $40 is nothing on UE.

      • I got fat on average of $25 meals.

        • +1

Meals is still $20. 40 is only for groceries and stuff

Mustn't be much meat in there.

          • @Mechz: Nope. Never been big on meat. Probably because I grew up poor. Do like chicken a lot though, maybe because chicken was cheap when I was a kid.

  • I signed up to the free trial yesterday to get a $30 discount, was planning on canceling it regardless since I only order delivery a few times a year.

If you do a lot of work related uber trips (funded by work) you can now bank the credit for yourself.

    • +1

Unrestricted fuel card is still better, can use it for smokes and snacks.

    • The PDF tax invoice shows the pre 10% discount price for me.

I just submit these for a reimbursement.

      • +1

Yeah at the moment it does - so my work benefits off my uber one. But soon I get the benefit.

        • I make money on the reimbursements at the moment is what I was getting at.

E.g. $18 fare with UberOne discount (and $18 billed to card) = $20 on Tax Invoice.

    • This is the reason I'll continue on.

It's important to note that the credit expires within 60 Days though.

I'll no longer be using Uber due to them delivering my groceries to a different house. Support took a whole day just to reply. I ended up doing a charge back through Commbank. Never. Again.

    • Sometimes our woolies comes by uber. However non delivery wrong items are immediate refund (from woolies). Dunno how they take that uo with uber.
