[PC] F.E.A.R. Platinum $1.79 (was $15) @ GOG

790

A great deal for one of my favourite PC shooters. Get ready to fear Alma in this technically advanced, high-octane bullet-time romp with inspiration drawn from Japanese horror and the Matrix. If you missed this one I would pick it up now at 88% off, it's a steal.

Edit: Comes with the base game and both expansions, Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate. While some older reviews report difficulty with getting the expansions working on Windows 10, I have verified they currently work without issue.

id buy that for a dolla

  • +4

    Man, what a classic.

You should give GOG a go. I love Steam but for retro games I think GOG has them beat with their DRM-free stance (although this can vary a bit depending on the title), and they actually put some work into getting older stuff working on new platforms. Plus they usually have some extras like wallpapers, sound tracks and the like.

      • -4

Unlike most people here i like to keep all my games in ONE PC platform rather than spreading it over many.

        • +6

You do you, GOG is worth it though. You can always add them as non-Steam games if that's important to you.

          • +6

@Deditus: He loves his DRM and being told what to play, when to play and how to play.

    • GOG and Steam are very different platform and game types, at least GOG guarantee the classic games load :)

This was great when it was released, scared the hell out of teenage me. I still close my eyes climbing down ladders in other games because of this.

    • +1

100% agree. One of the few moments that is burnt into memory.

    • +1

      ahaha oh man, those ladders!!!

  • Is Multiplayer still working?

    • +1

"NOTE: Online multiplayer functionality for this game has been disabled and is no longer accessible. Multiplayer is available only through a LAN connection. "

      • +1

        FEAR LAN parties then!

        • Could probably play online using some kind of VPN eg Hamachi

  • +4

    id love a remaster

  • +3

Great. For people that don't know, the enemy flanking you was actually code for the enemy to take cover in relation to your position and fire.
This created a sort of smart AI to flank and fire on the player.

Great game, love to action and story…

  • +1

Loved this game. Loved playing MP too and melee'ing everyone because it was OP.

Also definitely sent chills down my spine in the right moments.

  • +2

    Oh the nightmares…

  • Never climbing a ladder again

The bicycle kick in slow motion was the best

  • Playable on Steam Deck: link

  • Great game, its a bummer I didnt have the right GPU to play this game back then :(

    • not many did. It was a system killer

    • +1

That's one of the great things about playing the oldies, assuming you can get it working you can crank everything up to max on a new system and it can look better than it ever did back then

      • +1

Ya purchased this. Hope will play some day :)

        • +1

Make the time for it, it really is a gem

  • +7

I collect cheap games that I never get around to playing , thanks for the post!

    • You are not alone ;)

    • Happy to help you add to the pile :)

I have this for Xbox360. Was (is) a great game.

    • I bought the 360 version for the achievements after loving the PC version years prior. I could not get into the console version at all. From memory it was a shoddy port.

  • +1

FYI: Old comments on site notes issues with DRM.
Sadly the expansions do not work if you are on windows 10 because of DRM attached to the expansions. Odd for GOG's DRM free claim

    Wonder if still an issue?

    • That is a concern, I'm at work now but I'll see if I can find a definitive answer regarding this afterwards - hopefully it's been adressed or there is a workaround, IIRC the expansions were great also.

    • +2

Just tried both, they both work fine on Windows 10 :)

    • +1

Can't change reviews on GoG, if GoG patches a problem the lower star ratings and negative comments remain.

  • Great price for a great game. Scared the crap outta me as a kid. First expansion was great, second less so. Still not too bad if you enjoy the gameplay.

  • This was an awesome game

  • +2

Anyone who loved this game should keep an eye out for a new game that has very similar vibes. There's a free demo on Steam, and full version is out later this month:

  • Pity multiplayer doesnt work anymore. I had so much fun pinning people to the walls.

  • +2

To this day, very, very few games have enemy A.I. as advanced as the Replica in F.E.A.R. and this game was released in 2005.

It's a shame the franchise turned to absolute trash with F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin/F.E.A.R. 3; the original was the absolute peak of early 2000s extremely linear, corridor shooters but backed up with extremely satisfying gameplay.

    • +2

It's crazy that with all the recent AI advances, enemy AI in shooters basically hasn't evolved past the Replica in F.E.A.R. or the HECU marines in Half-Life.

I still liked Project Origin (admittedly much less so) but number 3 was just disappointing, it totally lost its identity.

      • +2

The only other title that comes to mind which also made the A.I. the centerpiece of the gameplay like F.E.A.R. did was Alien: Isolation but that's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison as you're only facing one enemy for the majority of Alien: Isolation's campaign.

Programming A.I. that behaves in a convincing, realistic and challenging way is hard.
Monetising the sh*t of the games with DLCs, micro-transactions and endless predictable sequels is easy and the core focus of most game developers these days.

I still liked Project Origin (admittedly much less so) but number 3 was just disappointing, it totally lost its identity.

Project Origin had its moments but they were undercut by a ridiculous story that completely jumped the shark and the consolised shooting mechanics that made the gameplay a lot less challenging/satisfying.

        • +2

I hate the monetisation of modern games, I find myself more and more drawn to games from 10+ years ago before that became the norm.

It's been a while, I might have to jog my memory by replaying both of them back to back!

          • +1

            @Deditus:

I find myself more and more drawn to games from 10+ years ago before that became the norm.

            Fully agree.

My gaming palette these days is probably about a 60/40 split between retro and modern games, in favour of retro games.

I still have dozens and dozens of older titles I never got around to playing back in the day that I much prefer to get into when I have the time to delve into a new game, as opposed to the current options the gaming industry offers:

            • Cash grab sequel of a long-running franchise that died years ago.
            • Reboot of a dead franchise 'coz the bills aren't paid and we have zero imagination.
            • Multiplayer MMO/FPS wankfest that requires a full time job's worth of hours to git gud and unlock everything.
      • CPU was crap on consoles on the last generation, I'm hoping game AI improves (along with physics simulation) now that modern consoles actually have a decent CPU and cross gen games are dying off. We will see though.

  • I was so pumped for FEAR 2. I was gutted they took quick saves and meleeing (I think?) away. The game was not the same.

    • +1

Quick saves were removed in favour of checkpoint saves but F.E.A.R. 2 had identical melee attacks to the first game but the damage they dealt was heavily reduced in F.E.A.R. 2. In the first game you could kill most enemy types with one or two flying kick attacks.

The change that irked me the most was the removal of leaning, which railroaded you into playing the game like a dumbed-down COD campaign.

      • If you think 2 was like a dumbed-down COD you probably shouldn't play F.E.A.R. 3 haha.

        • fear 3 coop was just dumb fun

        • +1

          you probably shouldn't play F.E.A.R. 3 haha.

I started it up and played for about 10 minutes; noticed I was running around on some rooftops in Brazil dodging helicopters and sh*t and realised this was in no way, shape or form a F.E.A.R. game, so I alt-tabbed out of there.

          • +1

@Gnostikos: I played co-op with my ex. It was loads of fun when playing with somebody but a pretty average game on your own and a truly awful game in the F.E.A.R. series.

I almost bought the GOG version to complete my DRM-free collection but they removed co-op which was inexcusable.

          • @Gnostikos: I don't blame you. I had to close out the trilogy. It seemed as if the devs took their cues from Modern Warfare; it's a shame they decided to trend-chase instead of sticking to what made the original so compelling.

      • +1

Ah. It was leaning that they removed, not melee.

  • Had a look at a walkthrough online, the graphics are a let down even by 2005 standards. Doom 3 came out a year earlier and looked much better, as did HL2.

    • +1

the graphics are a let down even by 2005 standards

They most certainly were not. F.E.A.R. was a benchmark for gaming PCs back in its day (you had to have a nearly $3000 dollar rig back then to push 60FPS at max settings) and the shadow/particle/lighting effects (especially during those chaotic firefights) were second to none.

Yeah the graphics haven't aged well but no games from 2005 or earlier have really.

    • Hard disagree - it looked amazing at the time and pushed the envelope technology-wise.
