Looking for low priced notebook with high res screen

Pretty much what the subject says.

It's for work purposes which means the only specs that really matter are USB3.0 and better-than-1366x768 resolution. Preferably 1920x1080 but 1600x900 would suit. No larger than 15.6"/2.8kg. A good battery life and warranty would be handy but not necessary.

I'd love a Zenbook UX31A, but the price kills it there. I really need the price to be as low as possible.

The best I've been able to find is the Dell Vosto 3560 while is on special for $899 until Thursday (i7-3612QM, 15.6" 1920x1080, 4GB, 500GB 7200RPM, HD 7670M 1GB, DVDRW, Webcam, 4xUSB3.0, 2.57 kg). It's a bit clunky looking but it'll do the job.

Alternatives?

I probably should have posted this in Find Me a Bargain, huh?

  • Nah it's fine staying in Computing forum.

You might also want to define what you meant by "Low Price". Since your reference is Dell Vosto 3560 at $899 I guess that would be the budget? It would be easier to find laptops with Full HD at 15.5inch/15.6inch. I am mainly scanning through these deals:

For example, Sony VAIO S with 15.5inch and Full HD screen for $799 + delivery from Sony Store.

If you are looking for smaller 1600x900, you can also look at ThinkPad EDGE S430 (14", 1600x900 at $55 upgrade option, 1.8kg). There are also 10-15% off Lenovo every other weekend.

  • Low price within the specific context of having a 15.6" or smaller and high res screen is what I meant. I posted the lowest price I could find for it - if there's ones down at $500 I'll be all over it. Basically as low a price as I can get within my requirements - this thing will literally be used for a few minutes a day for work related things and maybe an hour or two a week to write invoices. I do not need power, or grace, or anything like that. It needs to function as a notebook and have a high enough screen res that I can write invoices without getting pissed off at the need to scroll constantly.

I saw the VAIO S but unfortunately that'll take over a month to get to me, which is impractical. I fear the same may be true of waiting for a S430 special and then waiting for picking+shipping.

I may have to bite the bullet on the Dell. Since it's already got $300 off there's bugger all chance of me getting further discount… reckon I could get a warranty extension by harassing the online sales dude?

  • I went with the Dell. Unfortunately I hadn't noticed that the Express shipping doesn't apply to WA and it'll have to be road freighted. Which is pretty annoying.
