Thanks got the TP18 as it seems to get readings a little bit faster.

    • Just picked one up after reading your comment haha.

Thanks I've included it in the description.

      • Me too, worth the little bit extra hopefully.

        OOS :(

    • Wise choice.

I have the standard one. It works great, but it is slow.

  • +1

    This or the Inkbird? Thanks.

    • +2

Just grabbed the inkbird because it's got a rechargeable batt

      • This device probably has a shorter service life than battery life. My non-INKBIRD one is 5yro on its first battery.

      • +1

2-3 sec read time on the ThermoPro vs 3-5 sec on the Inkbird

        • might change my purchase based on those lol

    • I picked up the older version of InkBird a while back. It stopped working after around 12 months. The weakpoint is the soldier joints that wear out with the probe swinging in and out.

      • Is it fixable?

        Mine refuses to charge now

        • Yeah I fixed it but my soldiering skills are terrible and its look much worse now but works again. I remember paying decent money so it was worth a shot in fixing it

    • The Inkbirds I've had are amazing, I use them every day and only charge them every 2nd Christmas. I have never had a problem with any that I have had for years. The one ThermoPRO I had lasted 6 months before breaking.

Inkbird, the faster one. Gets a reading almost instantly. I will never go back to the slow ass ones. However the hold button on it is touch-triggered and annoying. If the TP18 gets a reading as fast without touch buttons, get it.

      • Got a link?

This is the one I bought for $35: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/224228871097

Btw the price was $40 last night. Looks like there's a 25% ebay voucher now so they've jacked the price by 30%. Nice to see our tax dollars that pay for the ACCC are being used so well.

  • Anyone with experience with these able to state which is the best pick?

    There's also the ThermoPro TP18 for $22.49.

  • Got the TP18, thanks

    Er, why the downvote?

When I posted my link there were no responses and the OP hadn't updated the listing to show the TP18.
    Tough audience today :-)

  • Got TP18 - Thanks. I can throw out analogue one from Kmart :)

  • Maybe get a thermapen? ONLY 10x more expensive:)

    • Honestly, this deal has made me wonder whether it's worth it to get the Thermapen at that price.

      • Well you pay a lot more to show your support to innovators and get marginally superior products in return. I personally use a Thermapen and I would say if you dont struggle to pay then go for it. Otherwise a $20 al cheapo will probably do 80%-90% as well.

    • I've had a Thermapen for 5 years and have been very happy. Obviously they are not cheap, but are very well made and provide a fast reading

      • I had mine for about the same time, still works like new! But I am highly doubtful if it can last 10x longer than this cheapo lol.

    • Get a thermopop, made by the same company, much thinner probe than the inkbird and reads a lot faster.

I've used this, the inkbird IHT-1P, and inkbird IHT-1S. But not the TP-18.

TP03: Cheap, works, magnetic, not the fastest read speed (but in most cases this only a slight inconvenience), battery cover always falls off, no integrated battery (good or bad depending on how you look at it), not water resistant. Mine is still working after 2 and a half years.

IHT-1P: CheapIsh, works, magnetic, not the fastest read speed, integrated battery, IPX5 rated (I haven't tested it but definitely much more water resistant than the TP03).

IHT-1S: Quick read speed, IP67 rated (again haven't really tested it, but have rinsed it under the tap and it's fine), screen rotates (in theory, mine has never done it and I couldn't be bothered returning it as I don't think it would actually be that useful), touch button (good for water resistance, but can be hit accidentally), not magnetic (probably the biggest downside for me, not being able to stick it on the fridge is a pain), integrated battery.

  • I've got one of these works pretty good

  • This listing looks cheaper for the Inkbird IHT-1P
    https://amzn.asia/d/9uRR9lr

    • Whoops, took me to the wrong listing for some reason. $19 here https://amzn.asia/d/2i7FyV9

      • $59 + $14 delivery?

        • The second link is the right one

          • @SpainKing: Second link redirects to the same item unfortunately.

            • +1

@illz: That's really weird because the URL is different and I pressed share on the one I meant to. Go down to other sellers and you'll see the one I'm talking about. It's sold by inkbirdau

Any reason to get this over a $12 coles one?
    https://www.coles.com.au/product/grillman-bbq-digital-flip-t…

    • +3

The ones in the OP are more established brands and likely to work better/longer

If you just want to try it out you could try the Coles one but it looks quite cheap and may take a long time to read. Certain pen thermometers also don't measure the heat at the tip of the probe (which is generally better), instead they measure along the whole length of the metal which can throw off the reading and requires you to insert it all the way in (harder with small meat)

After a bit more research it also seems that the Grillman only has a max temperature reading of 150⁰C whereas the Inkbird linked goes up to 300⁰C

    Thanks OP, grabbed the Inkbird.

  • Can I use this to check body temperature?

  • +1

    @Hunry Thankyou 👍

  • How do you use this while your steak is cooking?
Do you have to take it out periodically and stab it and check it? Wouldn’t it be better to use one that can stay safely in the oven with the steak so you can observe and take it out at exactly the right temp?

    • Yeah you have to stab it and check it.

If you're cooking a steak in the oven it won't develop a crust. If you want a crust you'll have to reverse sear it so bring it up to ideal temp - 3-5 deg c and then sear it in a ripping hot cast iron. This method will produce a better steak but will take much longer than just chucking a steak on a cast iron pan.

  • +1

    @Hunry Thank you. Ordered a TP03.

  • The Inkbird is far superior imo, I've used both in commercial kitchens for a few years with the Inkbird far exceeding the itronics in durability and quality.
