Is this RBA doing a secret survey?

Your kid(s) is/are going to be spending the better part of three years worth of traveling in the thing. They're perfectly fine second hand but if that wasn't an option then it's worth the money, for their comfort and safety.

That's before you get to how much more convenient a good pram is to a cheap one and when you're a parent convenience is worth an astronomical amount.

      • +5

Plenty of good popular branded prams for less than 500. Trust me, your kids won’t know the difference bw a 1500 dollar pram and 500 dollar one and are equally safe. Put that 1k into a nasdaq etf, will be enough to buy their first car

        • +1

Thing is though, you pay $1500-1800 new but can sell it for 50-60% of that if you take care of it. The good ones like this and Baby Bee hold their value.

          • @The Judge: I dunno - we got a second hand Bugaboo in perfect condition for like $300. It was $2k new.

            • +1

@loksmack: Ignorant sellers. We just sold our Babybee for $550, it was $950 new. Really depends on the time & place I suppose.

              • +1

                @The Judge: Yep it does.

Buying and reselling baby gear is almost a 0-sum game if you are clever.

For example, we picked up a used (but great condition) Snoo for $950 (over $2k new). People thought we were nuts spending that on a bassinet for 6 months. But after 6 months, we sold it for $900. That was always the plan - 'rent it' for a few bucks. I considered the $950 more of a deposit.

                • @loksmack: Very tempted to get one of those! How was your experience? Little one like it?

                  • +1

@The Judge: It's tough to say how the baby (our second) would have gone without the Snoo, but she was a dream sleeper compared to our first. I would recommend doing it in the same way we did - buy secondhand and resell or no/little money loss.

They'll be comfortable in most prams, let's be honest. Also, all prams have to meet Australian Safety Standards.

People get so carried away with baby stuff these days but each to their own, if you want to spend ludicrous amounts of coin on this kind of stuff, go for it

These prams are not faultless, but about as good as it gets. The Australian rep provides 10/10 service too.

    However… it's still $700-900 more than gumtree.

IIRC the previous design covered somewhere like 2015-2021 (although they released 'new' models, there were no changes other than fabric). And they're still perfectly good. Spare parts should be available too.
I doubt the 2022+ model has any tangible difference.
However, avoid 2014 models and earlier, due to lack of spare part availability.

  • Ordered one, Thanks OP

I got two of these off of Facebook marketplace for $50 each, and both times the parents I bought them from were almost grovelling with gratefulness for my helping them clear out their garage of baby paraphernalia.

It's hard to believe anyone with two functioning brain hemispheres would ever spend $1500 on a new one. My first car cost me $1100, for reference…

    • +5

2 vista v2 for $50? Come on now.

      • -6

Not v2s, no. But the improvements don't warrant an extra $1479.

I spent 6 months monitoring gumtree before marketplace was really a thing. I snagged the cheapest I ever saw, which was $500. Typical price was $700.

Every parent I know that has owned one rates it highly.

The only thing that sucks is the optional skateboard. Disconnects easily. BUT mine was second hand.

      • We have one, and it is brilliant. It was a lot of money, however it is engineered really well, allowing my very small wife to lift it comfortably when folded and get it into the car given the way it is designed to pivot around the waist

  • Just get a yoyo2,

You end up downsizing to lighter, more compact sized prams

Why not just use a shopping trolley!
      Different category :)

  • I got a Baby Jogger City Select 2 Double Pram with 2 seats for $829 a few months ago. Works really well at half the price of the Uppababy. No bassinet though but babies grow out of bassinets super quick.

    • I have the original Baby Jogger City Select purchased 2 years ago. I find that considerably heavy and with 2 seats I find it extremely hard to manoeuvre. Storing it in the boot of sedan means that I have very limited space left for anything else.

On a positive side, the pram is robust and sturdy. However, if I could back in time, I wouldn’t buy it.

I have heard great things about Uppababy from other parents and I have been considering buying it but even at this price I find it very expensive for what it is.

  • Bought this one recently as it offers dual seat functionality but is much easier to push & manoeuvre than other double prams. Very well made, and they hold their value well.

  • Baby products like this are insanely priced. What is the production cost of a mass-produced item like this, made up of some metal prices, plastic, and fabrics?

    • I view these as preying on nervous parents and those with larger bank balances. They're not 20x better than a cheap one.

My bub ain't gonna flex to other bubs about having "100% full-grain leather accents" on their buggy lol

For my money, single best feature to look for is one that will fold up small, there's plenty that will fold to plane carry-on size.

  • Great unit, but buy second hand.
