Melbourne - Shuttle + Cafe + Attraction Suggestions?

Hi Guys,

Visiting Melbourne again because it's so awesome!!

Arriving on 28th Aug in the morning and am staying at Oaks on Market. I have a few questions:

  1. Easiest and cheapest way to get from Tullarmarine Airport to hotel?

  2. Any good cafes in the City? Heard that Melbourne is famous for good cafe food.

  3. Also any places you'd say I HAVE TO visit in the city?n Does anyone know when the Crown Casino fire show start?

  4. Good places for dinner?

Of course this being ozbargain I don't want to spend a wad of cash ;)

Thanks for your help!!
I love crowd resourcing :)!!

  • 1) Easiest is taxi, Skybus, then probably private bus charters.
Cheapest is public transport. See http://blog.ozbargain.com.au/2012/free-parking-public-transp…

    2) Plenty of these. Walk down some of the laneways and pick one you fancy.

    3) ACMI Game Exhbition is on, footy, Themed bars, Berlin Bar (East Berlin/West Berlin military), LuiWow (Hawaaian). Free and cheap things to do, see my post.

Crown Fire show is once an hour I believe.

    4) Dumpling restaurant in Chinatown (Hutong is my preference), Greek food (my pref. Pirues Blues), Rockpool ($ but for a cheaper meal try the bar menu Wagyu burger). So many choices…

  • if you go by taxi, might as well get a limo transfer (cost around $15 more).

    otherwise as above, skybus.

if you mean the flaming pillars - starts at 6 and goes off every hour (until 9 i think).

yes there are good places for dinner, depends what you like to eat

  • edit: dw found out how much taxi will cost, I think skybus is the best option. The private buses take way too long

I don't really know which cafe's to go to. I know there are a lot so anyone you like personally guys?

There's an overabudance of cafes. Honestly, any direction you walk you will find a good cafe especially where you are staying. While Melbourne has good cafes, I wouldn't say you'd get anything too different from Sydney cafes.

      From Urbanspoon,

      That list is pretty good.

Pellegri's is an old school Italian cafe.
      Brother Baba Budan Good coffee.
Brunetti- Good coffee, lots of Italian desserts. Go to the original Carlton one.

Easiest and cheapest way to get from Tullarmarine Airport to hotel?
Taxi would be the easiest/quickest. Shuttlebus would be cheaper but more time consuming to get to your hotel.

Any good cafes in the City? Heard that Melbourne is famous for good cafe food.
Melbourne Cafes are everywhere. If it looks busy, it's a goodie :). Many good Cafes are hidden in small laneways on Lt. Flinders Lane, Collins St, and Bourke St. Check out Brother Baba Budan (359 Lt Bourke St), Sensory Lab (297 Lt Collins St).

Also any places you'd say I HAVE TO visit in the city?n Does anyone know when the Crown Casino fire show start?
The fire show starts on the hour from day to night. Take the free hop on/hop off City Circle Tram (hop off at Dockland). Rialto Tower, Botanical Garden, Victoria Market (Sat/Sun), St Kilda beach/Market and Luna Park (Sun), Chinatown.

    Good places for dinner?
chinatown - Shanghai Dynasty $$$$$(highly recommended)
Melba (lunch & dinner buffet $$$$$)
Crown Casino - Wide selection of restaurants and foodcourts
Lygon St - Italian cuisines $$$
Portland (corner Russell & Lt Collins $$$) - one of the best chicken parma in town

    Hope this helps! :)

    • thanks! will visit chinatown and crown that's for sure…

  • Oh also which alleyway has the best graffiti?

Hosier Lane (Opposite Fed Square off Flinders St, with Modiva's on the corner) is the easiest to find and most popular, but if you wander the laneways it's everywhere.

  • On the place to visit, just a kind reminder that it has been discussed 2 months ago here — you might be able to find some interesting places from that old thread.

    • Thanks scotty I searched for it in the forums but couldn't find it. Cheers!
