  • Reviews seem to say it's not a great entry Level machine. Anyone have experience with it? Just want to make a couple of cups in the morning for my partner and I

Had it for 2 years. It has some clear faults. Unless you're into high maintenance or mods, it'll be a slog (water flow/pressure being the biggest of them). Lots of videos to help though. Fun for DIYers.

    • If you enable your DM's, I'll shoot you some advice

All you need is the 6.5/9 bar spring.

    • what is the portafilter size? I am looking for only 58mm

You won't get a better domestic espresso machine than this at the price.

Not a good as they were, but still excellent.

Set aside at least as much for a grinder.

I've owned both the pre 2015 Gaggia classic and GCP.

The gcp is as good as the gaggia classic. I think the only thing the pre 2015 has over the gcp is the adjustable opv by hex screw.

The gcp does have a stainless steel group head plate out of the box (pre 2015 had alu), and the shower head is also much better.

The 2015 - 2018 classic that didn't have the 3 way valve is the one to avoid.

        • Yeah same, i've got the earlier Gaggia Classic too - no need for this opv mod. Think I must have got it in 2008 or something.

Solid machine, I guess it suits people that want to learn, not just press a button. have never tasted a good coffee from a mates auto sunbeam/brevilles or his auto Gaggia.

Have done these maintenance / upgrades, let the machine go with the cleaning but it's better anyway now.

If anyone can get a brand new Gaggia Classic for <400 there is absolutely nothing even close to it at that price point.

I commented on this the other day, I'll paste here:

I have a Gaggia Classic Pro and I love it even at the regular price I paid for it. I had a Sunbeam espresso machine before and I thought that was good, but I now realise I had been drinking hot brown water with a hint of coffee-ness.

There are a few caveats that I think everyone should know before investing. People have discussed this extensively on reddit r/gaggiaclassic but my thoughts are:
      * You need a good coffee grinder. I believe the rule of thumb is to spend more on the coffee grinder than the machine, you need a good fine grind with fine control on the grind.
      * It's a single boiler, which basically means you will have difficulty making more than 2 milk-based coffee drinks quickly.
      * You may want a few extras/mods for it. It's added expense and effort, but you don't need to go all the way unless you want to improve results. IMHO the ones that made the most difference, in order of increasing expense/effort:
      1) Get a WDT tool
      2) Install the 9-bar OPV mod
      3) Install a PID mod, or for the more daring, Gaggiuino mod
      * You'll want to watch some of the espresso Youtubers on how to make espresso. It's not hard, but just to say that you will definitely make better coffee with a bit of learning because it's a manual espresso machine. Note that automatic machines don't produce better coffee consistently (or coffee shops would be using them).

Bonus is I save on buying coffee at the cafe, because I hate that it's just not as good as at home.

The best entry level machine on the planet at this price though

  • Who are they

    • +3

Pretty sure they are a Costco reseller. Just about everything they have seems to be from Costco.

    • +4

They buy stuff from Costco, mark up and sell

    • Similar to Fair Dinks: https://www.fairdinks.com.au/

  • This is a great deal. Thanks OP

Only 1 machine was in stock. OOS.

Id hold off this and buy the new model EVO instead.

For that price it is a no brainer.
      New version or not.
New version boiler coating change and Portalfilter stainless steel and grouphead solid brass. Rest seems to be same and I'm sure price is up.

  • can anyone recommend a good value for money grider to pair with this?

I would see if you can pick up a second hand Mazzer super jolly, or Mazzer Mini, the above suggestion is below par for espresso grind

Or a Eureka Mignon grinder of some sort

      • I don't think they would consider $850-1200 for a Mazza mini good value for money.. it's a lot more than the coffee machine. The sky is the limit with all this crap so where do you stop.

A good conical burr grinder is fine, just make sure it goes fine enough but can easily mod it with a washer. Or just get one of those pwd tools everyone goes on about.

        • I picked up a second hand super jolly for $150, sure… they're 850-1200 new but cafes shut all the time and the burrs are super easy to replace.

Facebook marketplace is full of them

          • +1

@Paudius: May have to check it out one day..

      • I was considering a Rancilio Rocky grinder, those aren't overly expensive (but i still haven't felt the need to upgrade)

    • If you're willing to grind manually kingrinder k6. It takes about 20 - 30 seconds to grind 18g for espresso.

Flavour profile ( clarity and body) I think is unrivalled at the price point.

Single boiler machines are probably not idea for making multiple milk based drinks, you have to wait for water to heat up or cool down between brew and steam. You really have to change your workflow to adapt.

HX machines also has a single boiler, but as the name suggests it has a heat exchanger to regular brew temperature while steam is readily available.

Breville Bambino plus would be my choice over a Gaggia or a Silvia for anyone who knows coffee .. the silvia and the gaggia are renowned for lasting because they are simple.. making good coffeee is not just the machine and good fresh grind..it is the human as well.. the Bambino plus does a great job..has everything built in and is a way better starter machine ..way more forgiving with the built in PID .. may not last as long as the Gaggia or Silvia but does not need any modding, has a bigger tank and the heat up time is just incredible ..the only people looking at this class of machines are beginers into the coffee experience ,, get a Bambino plus unless you know what you are doing and will only need that one single boiler your whole life

    • I agree with this. I bought a Gaggia for my old man years ago when he got into the idea of making coffee at home.

Last year my sister wanted a coffee machine too, I looked back into what was available and ended up buying her a Bambino Plus. Painfully easy to use and gets very good results for the money.

      • The bbp just sounds easier I guess, if you had to recommend something. I was never keen on the usual Breville or sunbeam machines and some aren't even that cheap.

Probably sound advice unless someone is really getting into it and happy to tinker and/or spend a lot more.

Great machine for a great price. It's compact and can make an excellent coffee out of the box, though I do recommend the mods…. 9obv spring, half height drip tray, PID and single hole steam wand tip are all quite straight forward to add. PID might take a few hours for a novice, bigger issue is the tight space to work in if you have large hands.

Order went through within a couple of hours of the deal being posted, but then cancelled today because no stock. Not particularly happy with the result

    • Pretty shit, can you ask for a rain check? Probably not as easy as at Coles.

      • No idea, all they do is send an email saying it’s cancelled because if lack of stock and you haven’t been refunded.

        • That's a shame, ripper price hey

  • They were never going to fulfil
    Probably drop shipped from costco
