It's fine - they do offer a better five-piece set with 3 pots and 2 pans with metal handles which is reasonable and can be had for about $150, however you're generally better off buying pans you'll use individually.

I can't personally do without a 30cm deeper pan for one-pots/noodles/stir fries (rather than a wok) so grabbing that and a 24/28 frying pan and a 18/20 pot or two and you're probably spending about the same.

Tefal Intuition Stainless Steel Induction Frypan 30cm B8170744 was $49 last week - I should've bought a few. Pays to keep an eye peeled on this stuff.

Disclaimer: Teflon doesn't do high heat, so expect to replace anything you're seering with every couple of years. I personally can't be arsed with cast iron/carbon steel so I just replace as required. Don't buy 'high quality' as they're disposable.

Not telling anyone what to do, but remember that these non-stick pans are usually coated in toxic forever-chemicals that are linked to cancers such as testicular cancer.

There is a lot of things that SIGNIFICANTLY increase your lifetime risk of developing cancer eg,

    Smoking
    Drinking too much alcohol
    Being overweight
    A lack of physical activity
Eating too much red and processed meat
Not eating enough fruit and vegetables

The whole "Studies suggest that XYZ "may" increase your likely hood of cancer" is likely not the thing that will likely get you. There is an old adage among scientists "Given sufficient research anything can be proven to cause cancer". Life expectancy is increasing around the world every year in inverse proportion to the increase in the use of non-stick pans… so there is that (I know, I know correlation does not imply causation, but even so.)

It's likely not the pan that is going to give you cancer, it's what you put in it. Chill out, have a glass of wine (singular) and cook something healthy to eat, we all gotta die someday :-)

I literally have all of these covered:
      Smoking
      Drinking too much alcohol
      Being overweight
      A lack of physical activity
Eating too much red and processed meat
Not eating enough fruit and vegetables

But I do agree with you. It's why I laugh when people criticise soy milk for being estrogenic, but they probably drink beer which is far more estrogenic. I still don't drink soy milk tho, because I have already addressed beer. It's also why I said "I'm not telling anyone what to do."

Still, there's no harm in putting the information out there for people like me who do try and optimise for both quality and longevity of life. I know a lot of people who have had cancer, and some who have had dementa and alzheimers, and it's not the way I want to go… It might not be 100% clear that, for example, aluminium causes alzheimers, but there's a possibility it does, so I'll just opt for a deoderant without aluminium.

it's also important to note that PTFE's are called "forever chemicals" for a reason, and while it might turn out that they don't bioaccumulate enough in one human from pans alone, they will continue to accumulate in the environment, and that could one day lead to much greater issues than pans, especially if it has bioaccumulated in our food chain several times over before it reaches us.

  • Been using Tefal for awhile and decided to switch to Green Pan, the quality just really poor and not long lasting at all, that's why they are cheap!
