[QLD] Whole Seedless Watermelon $0.08/kg, Cauliflower $0.48/ea @ Bella Fruit Market, Eight Miles Plain

620

8c/kg for watermelon. The cheapest I have seen in my life. The previous record was 9c/kg in 1989.

There are other specials including Cauliflower at 48c each. Not huge but not that small either. Still fresh, the surface is white, not many black spots. Unfortunately I don't know how to link 2 pictures.

How do the watermelons taste though? The last 5 I got from there were shit. One went straight to rubbish after cutting through it.

Need to know how to pick. Generally for smaller ones <5kg, you are unlikely to get one thats sweet and juicy. So I tend to aim for something preferable over 10kg. These watermelons are large. If all they have ate small ones I won't bother to buy.

Also look for "belly button"(?), the bit at the bottom of the watermelon, the smaller the sweeter. If one thats just a dot, that's a female and will definitely be sweeter.

Then knock on it, slap on it, percuss on it. If the frequency is high, then its more likely thick skin and not very well hydrated. You need to feel the vibration, resonance in your hand. The more vibration, the juicier it is.

There are many youtube guides on how to pick a watermelon. So far, 95% of watermelon I picked from Bella has been good. The other 5%, i just make it into watermelon juice. At 8c/kg, can't really go wrong.

      Core memory unlocked 😂
I remember a roadside stand down the road from there that sold custard apples. My parents would spend ages picking out the best ones while I sat in the car aha

      • OMG, same. You're not my sibling are you?

  • $2.9 / kg at local woolies (vic)…. :(

    Please upload the cauliflower. TQ

I uploaded cauliflower but lost the watermelon. I think you can only upload one at a time.

Did some screenshot editing. That'd the best I can do.

  • Someone should pick a stack full, drive it to NSW, and sell for 80c a kilo and still make a profit 😅😅

I already saw someone got a whole trolley full of watermelons.

  • Are they still good and fresh?

The Blunder Rd fruit shop in Oxley had 7c/kg watermelon as a loss leader circa 2008. We bought bulk melons for everyone, good times!

  • Just so you know… There's A grade and B grade produce. These are probably B grade, sold as that at wholesale market "up the road". So need to check more vs A grade (eg supermarket grade). Might also end up with less usable material than A grade.

At Bellas now and there are only 88cents per kg watermelons

    • Was at Bellas and experienced the same issue :S

  • Just saying… this fruit market opens 24/7

    • I've always wondered who's buying fruit at 3am

      • I am :S

Bought 4 in the middle day, picked some huge ones and unable to measure, so the lady there just key in $1 each for me. Cut one just now, thick skin but pretty fresh.

  • 88 cents when i got there but coli still 48c and big cabbages 98cents

  • Ok. I finally cut one of the watermelons i bought at 8c/kg. Very fresh and very good quality. Crunchy, and juicy, and is sweet as well. Something thats liken to those you get in high end fruit market that sells at $3.99/kg, and certainly better than Copes and Woolies. Wish I can post the picture. So ultimately, you just need to know how to pick.

    • Can I hire you for 8c per hour to come and pick me some watermelons?
