The FREE, fully online, UPP program from UTAS is awesome for people looking to enhance their skills and increase their employability. UPP is not just about preparing for further study, it is about gaining skills that are directly applicable to the workplace like critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and digital literacy.
UPP is completely free, there are not even SAAF fees plus you get the other benefits of being a student like:

  • student discounts
  • .edu email address
  • free OFFICE 365.

2023 Semester 2 enrolment due date 10/7/2023.

Lolz…. In some way I thought it is “high school” is already a UPP….

    • +17

You'd be surprised to see how many people struggle to make the transition from secondary to tertiary education

      • +15

Indeed. High school is nearly impossible to fail and everything is fed to you. University is mostly self study with no one to hold your hand along the way. I certainly was surprised when I first started.

        • +2

I loved the change personally speaking.

Highschool was too much like daycare for teens imo.

      • Because Australian (and most western countries') high school is a joke, teaches you barely anything and stops as soon as something gets remotely difficult

Lots of other uni's offer free enabling/bridging/pathway courses too. The UNE one is nifty as they incorporate both prep subjects and "real" ones, so it is a good taste test and knocks two subjects off your actual degree. A better point-of-difference perk to spruik for uTas is their fee waiver courses - listed at https://www.utas.edu.au/study/scholarships-fees-and-costs/fe…

I'm keen to apply just to get the edu email address :)

      True Ozbargainer!

    • Don’t you need student card as well? I recently wanted to get couple of softwares discounted under student scheme and both wanted scanned copy / photo of a student id for it to work. (So i’m waiting for course to commence on campus as that’s when they issue the card)

    • did you get it? What if you dont study?

  • +1

how long can u keep the edu email?

    • +1

UPP only allows Max 3 years. Not sure if you can retake the course all over again while keeping the same account.

  • +1

how many hours of commitment does the course require?

  • UPP was free when I attended over 10 years ago ;)

    • -1

I bet houses cost less back then as well…

      • -3

About the same as 3 years ago.

Ok neggers who think I'm wrong. UPP was offered a free course back then (and now) for those who don't meet the requirements for doing a qualification at UTAS. E.g. low or no ATAR. Here's a post from UTAS in 2012 saying that it was free then.

House prices in Tassie didn't skyrocket until about April 2020 either. Before then your average 3 bedroom house was <$350k.

First-home buyers drove much of this growth, with a record high 1,836 first-home buyer sales in 2020, a 26% growth from the previous year and 54% growth compared to 2015.

The median house price for first-home buyer purchases also hit a record high of $355,000 in 2020, compared to $335,000 in 2019 and $268,000 in 2015.

      Boom fact checked.

  • Suppose this is not meant for past students?

  • +1

There’s min. 1 year requirement. How much study does this entail. Don’t want to fail anything and potentially ruin my academic records?

  • +1

Are there actual assessments for this?

    • -4

Of course not. This course will show you how to improve your stamina so that you can party hard until long after the rooster has crowed by mistake. Naturally, if you don’t already have the requisite intelligence, then no amount of preparation will help

    • +1

Yes it's like high school where you do tests and projects on English, Maths etc.

      • So you will get gradings or % marks from a teacher or similar? And can potentially fail?

        • +3

Yeah like any other course you have core and elective units. Most universities offer preparation programs, so this "deal" isn't exactly unique.

Literally a course to get you into Uni when your ATAR is too low.

"gaining skills that are directly applicable to the workplace like critical thinking…" Actually critical thinking skills are a disadvantage in the modern world. To succeed you just have to mindlessly agree with the leftist progressivist worldview. Never question what you are told to believe.

    • I won't question you!

  • So this is free…. Enroll and then do we need to attend in person at all.

Can you get an actual student card from it?

    • can this course be done online

  • +3

Can I sign up and then not submit anything or read any material but still get the .edu.au email address to get student discounts?

  • Can someone please confirm that this is totally free and you get the edu email?
Was it an easy application to get too?
