[Refurb] Apple iPhone 8 64GB $129 + Delivery ($0 with $250 Order) @ Coles

380

Cheapest it has ever been, cheaper than the $199 from last week's catalogue. Thanks to @RichardL for the link to the catalogue in the oil post. Can be seen on Page 43. Will not get iOS 17 but is fine as a first phone, spare phone, phone for someone with basic needs, etc.

  • Bare in mind this phone won’t receive ios 17. Possibly explaining the drop in price. It should still receive minor security updates for ios16 though, for a while at least.

The other problem with not having the latest iOS will be most apps will simply not download to this device anymore limiting its usability.

      • +2

Maybe so nsingh21, but not today.

Almost all apps will support iOS 16 for years.

        • -1

I like your optimism, but sometimes not having just 1 app that you really need is a big nuisance. I'm actually not going to buy this phone but thought to drop that in as a caution to others, just something to be wary of.

          • +1

@nsingh21: Apps will support iOS 16 let alone 17 for years. It was a major OS change.

          • -1

@nsingh21: i don't think people are buying an almost 6 year old phone to use as their primary one.

      • +3

most apps will simply not download

        rubbish…

        • Not now, in the future mate

      • +7

It used to be pretty bad not being on latest but things are "improving" in this regard as the fleet ages and the SDK gets more stable.

        • Thanks, that's good to read. My 6S should be good for a while yet. (Not primary! before you judge me :-)

        • You can usually get away with running the older app’s version for a little while after they stop being supported too.

Gonna be honest: this things close to junk now. Not sure buying a home phone that won’t get software updates is ever a good idea.

    • +2

But it's apple! If i can't afford a $1000+phone to make me look cool, at least i can get this old one, right?

    • +2

I use my iphone 6s to lock 7-11 fuel price, It still gets some software security updates.

      • Out of curiosity why not just use your actual phone?

        • +7

Because I don't want to root my phone and using an iPhone and 3utools is the easiest way to set a virtual location IMO.

  • Cheaper for a reason

  • Good phone for accessing those cheap turkey plans

  • +4

Still a good phone. For anyone who wants to try IOS, and does not like the awkward bulky screens that are fashionable now, this is good value.
Its all about the software, and unlike any Android phone of this distinguished vintage, the software still works fine.
Including the Google suite! You can use google maps, photos, gmail, etc etc.
The display is great, it is waterproof-ish, only one camera at back, but a decent one.
I just hope the battery is OK.

    • +9

This iPhone maybe fine but please don't rubbish Android I have this vintage and older and they are also working fine. The battery can also be changed so there is that.

      • batteries in iphones can also be changed. not a quick in/out swap but it's doable for most people with basic tools.

      • I have a Pixel. It works aside from a dead battery, but updates stopped years ago.
They say it is very hard to replace battery without breaking the screen, due to the waterproofing.

    • The display is great

      1334 x 750 IPS @ 60Hz?

      What am I missing here?

      • Retina baby!
        Original iPhone was 320x480. :)

The 8 is LCD, not OLED, but good outdoor visibility. 120 hz makes for smooth scrolling, but you soon stop noticing it.

        • Retina baby!

I don't get as excited about marketing terms as you do. I prefer to look at the actual specs. 326 ppi. I'd call that good, but not great.

          • -1

@HomeAlone: FFS, I even put in a smiley just for people like you who can't recognise humour in writing.

  • +3

Will this work purely as a airtag monitoring device?

    • Sure. But considering it wont get iOS 17, there is a chance in 2-3 years even AirTags may not work with it should they make any breaking software changes.

    • The iPhone 8 lacks the U1 chip used to locate an AirTag’s specific location with decently accurate distance and direction to it. For me that is quite important, and the reason I myself haven’t gotten any yet also (I have a XS which doesn’t have it either). I will likely get a couple when I upgrade my phone

  • +1

My iphone 5S still got some software security updates (not full blown iOS). So this could be good for another 4-5 years in my opinion, of course that might change depending on Apple strategy.

    • 4-5 years, I doubt it. iPhones slow down over time, and the battery life in these smaller iPhones is horrendous after a few years. I have an iPhone 8. It lasts roughly 10 mins of use. Having said that, the camera in this is pretty good if you know how to get the best results out of it. Unfortunately, the battery in mine doesn't last long enough to take it anywhere.

      • It shouldn’t slow down as it won’t be getting the bigger, more ram hungry OS upgrades going forward, with the current ios16 the last upgrade for this ancient device (2017). It is already slowed down as much as it would be OSwise. Security updates will continue for a few years more, but they should not affect performance.
Of course, the battery will eventually drop to a level that management will kick in, but it is new so battery should be good, and surely people would only buy this as a backup or a burner so I doubt that is worth thinking about.

      • The A11 chip should still be able to run things on iOS quite smoothly. It’s gonna be way better than anything hardware wise you get in the Android world at this price point. I have an old iPad Air 2 that uses the A8X and it still runs everything reasonably well. It’s quicker than cheap Android devices that’s for sure. Interesting thing, the budget chips found in Android devices barely improve and are still so sluggish in 2023.

  • +3

    good as a 711 chopper.

    • So is a $50 iphone 7.

      • Where to get $50 iPhone 7?

        • -1

          facebook marketplace

          • @jv: Can't find any around that price on marketplace , looking in Melbourne with 400k radius.

            • @johnmelb: I've seen them often… Keep checking.

              • @jv: any warranty?

                • @tdw: No

              • @jv: i got my red iphone 7 128gb for like $120 irrc (like last yr or smth)

  • +3

False economy. Buy the 2020 SE. You will get around 3 more years out of it

    • What is the price difference?

      • +1

Was $199 from coles recently. Likely to drop again
Edit… $179 from Greengadgetsaustralia eBay store with code

        • For the Greengadgetsaustralia one: difference would be iPhone SE in good condition vs an excellent iPhone 8 condition.
Excellent condition for iPhone SE is $219.82 on eBay from same seller.

          • @johnmelb: Coles one is equivalent to good condition. Multiple reviews on previous deal saying scratches, dirty etc

            • +1

              @Kanjus: Thanks for the feedback,
I thought the Coles one was supposed to be excellent (I also did see some reviews of scratches and people returning the phone).
After reading some other comments (longer support etc.) I went ahead with the excellent SE2 from Greengadgetsaustralia with replaced battery for $217.62 (via eBay plus discount).

              • @johnmelb: No stock left

                • +1

@asa79: If you really want one, it's back in stock, and ebay code still works today.

              • @johnmelb: What's the eBay plus discount? Is it automatically applied if I sign up?
SEOFYHG this code gives me $20 which isn't the best.

            • +1

@Kanjus: Picked one up today (iPhone 8).
Excellent condition, maybe 5% sign of use..

Boost retail packaging, 3rd party charging cables etc.

              Battery 'showing' 100%..
3h 42 screen on time and still 30% battery left.
Been downloading apps, playing around with all features, watching a little bit of you tube… Etc etc.. always on vpn on background…

Fingers crossed the battery is still performing this well in a month's time.

Battery was zero on first set up…

              • +2

@GimmmeBargains: The 8s are going to be stuck on ios 16. Not an issue for some.
You should do the following otw return under 30 day guarantee:
                Check battery health in settings
Check front and back camera, take photos and video
                Check earpiece speaker and loudspeaker
Check bluetooth, wifi, 4g, apple pay

        • Which code for $179 ?

    • iPhone noob question; been looking through the GreenGadgets phones, is the SE2 the same as the SE2020?

      • +1

yes. first gen se was released in 2016.

  • +2

According to jb hifi trade In, this is worth $70 assuming light to moderate scratches. Might be worth holding on to this until they have those trade in bonuses (eg extra 250) to get credit for a new phone

  • Tempting.
But is 64GB enough? Nowadays an app of the most simple task will take up more than 100MB space.
And refurbished ones are supposed to have 100% healthy battery?

  • +1

Does refurbished mean they gave it in overhaul — new battery at least?
Otherwise a phone from 2017 is due for battery swap

    • Mine seems ok so far and i am not being ghosted.

      • +1

I think it could have been user error from my family. One of the accessibility modes had been triggered and we're not iOS literate lol. I retracted my comment in case it misleads people

  • +2

I wanted to get a second phone for my overseas trip in case I lose my phone and can't log in to anything.

I can't believe this phone. Not a scratch or a mark on it. Battery life is really good too.

    Absolute bargain.

    • +2

Nice to see the deal was useful to you.

  • Made order but it cancelled in the next day…

  • +3

I bought one yesterday and picked up just now. Immaculate quality. It's a steal. Boost branded box with a $2 SIM.

  • +1

Bought one yesterday. Absolutely no marks on the phone at all. Battery health is 90%.

  • Bought, confirmed, and order cancelled second day.
