De'Longhi Magnifica Start Fully Automatic Coffee Machine - Black/Grey $549 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

400

Hey Ozbangs this is a great price on a great machine. It came second in the recent Choice magazine reviews scoring 80 out of a hundred, and was being compared to machines well over two thousand dollars. We have one and it makes lovely espresso and makes a satisfying loud noise doing so.

Not really a fully automatic as you still have to use milk frothing wand

    • Description says it froths milk?

      • It's a manual steam wand

    • Fully automatic has traditionally referred to the coffee extraction process.

    Not sure of the differences.

    • Comes in UK plug

    • +1

      It has 265 postage

      • Free delivery with prime, shame about the plug. I assume its hard wired.

        • Yes you're right, both about postage and plug

@Donmega123: Cut the plug off and replace with a AU plug from Bunnings. Easy to do, costs about $4.
I moved to AU from EU last year. Replaced plugs on all my devices.

    Upvote because it’s ECAM22021BG

    But Same price at jb

    473 at tggc btw

  • not much of a discount, was $599

  • What came first in the choice ratings @Donmega123

    • +1

i just ad a look on choice and couldnt see this exact machine in the ratings. it was actually the DeLonghi Magnifica S ECAM 22.110.SB. The model number is different.

A couple of Jura models took the top spots, then this delonghi, then the Melitta Avanza Series 600 Type F 27 / 0-100 and then the DeLonghi Dinamica Plus ECAM 370.95.T to round out the top 5.

    • Two Jura models at 81.

Breville express is going for a similar price. But thinking maybe the Breville bambino plus with a dedicated grinder. Less chance of losing the whole setup if something goes wrong.

    • +1

Some of the cheaper automatics, the interior gearing for the tamp mechanism would be the first thing to go

      • Do you have an alternative solution?

        Thanks.

        • +1

Personally? I have a bambino plus + got a second hander mazzer super jolly.
What I prefer is not necessarily what will suit everyone though

    • At this price range, the bambino and separate grinder + tamp is the way to go. (this is my setup)

      • that's not a bean to cup machine though.

it's more of a: weigh your beans, grind your beans, tamp, pull a shot but make sure you run a blank shot first to heat up the portafilter and basket, then pull another shot after adjusting the grind, then hope for the best.

These are pretty rubbish if u care about coffee and know how it should taste.

I got this exact machine at Good Guys last week for $493 including 3 years of Gold Service Extras.

I tried to price match GG Commercial ($471), but the Gold service includes 6 $20 vouchers over the three years so would be ahead.

The machine itself was $418 plus $75 for the warranty. YMMV

    • Can I ask how do you get this price? Been eyeing on this machine for a while. Thanks

      • I spoke to a salesperson in store and showed him the GG Commercial price.

He said he couldn’t match but could do the bundle he offered.

Try your luck in store. It may help to actually have access to TGG Commercial.

    • So the tgg is cheaper than tgg commercial? What's with the price match then?

      • It was a bundle price only, I couldn’t opt out of the warranty and get the machine for $418. It may have been the cost price.

  • manual milk frother :(

  • +2

I like manual milk frothing. This slightly puts a barrier to having more coffees than you should. At one stage I was having far too many while I had a nespresso; like 3 per day. Now I just have one and be done with it.

    • If I'm home for most of the day (eg weekends), then I'll easily have 3 coffees. Milk frothing is not a barrier.

      • I hear that 6 coffees will reduce risk of dementia.

Great machine, been using it since October 2022!

  • +2

Can vouch for this machine, have 2 coffees a day from this. This is way better than nespresso/pod machines, and of course not as good as a manual one, but I prefer to press 2 buttons and that's it.

  • +2

I've had one of these for 6 years. No issues at all. Makes great coffee (ignore the snobs on here that have never had a coffee from one). So much better than a Nespresso !!!

    • Agree, Nespresso is probably a 4/10, this machine is probably a 7.5/10.

  • Thanks but ended up going the Breville the Barista Express Impress from the Good Guys for $839 which did not seem too bad and I think will produce slightly better shots… I have the dual boiler at home and really enjoy that but need something a little more 'easier' to use as I want to try use this one at work for some better coffee there as well (fingers crossed!)

Great machine. I went from a manual (Dedica) to this.
Main reason was that it's a couple of button presses including the steam wand frothing. It's less mess with coffee grounds spilling now and then, washing the Porta filter etc.

Just remember to fine tune the grind settings to your taste (finer is not always better 😉) and use good quality beans. I use Inglewood Roosevelt and Downtown as I enjoy the darker roasts.

If you're a massive Espresso afociando and love spending time tasting the after taste, acidity, detecting the underlying flavours of the various roast, etc. then an automatic machine is probably not for you - invest in a high end grinder and manual machine instead.

  • If I can't weigh the beans and the water, what's the point? :>

    • there is an adjustment for how long the shot pulls for which means you can adjust the volume of espresso being produced, and if i'm not mistaken the dial at the front of the machine allows you to adjust the amount of coffee being used per shot

      • Thanks man. Sorry, I'm just being a coffee (profanity). Good info though.

  • Good guys price beat gets you it for $539. Bought it for this price yesterday, dont forget you can try and see if salesmen are willing to beat the other price a few times until they won't budge any more.

  • Can anyone explain the main difference of this vs the magnifica S currently on sale by Amazon right now at $499. Is that the older model ? Does it do anything that this doesnt?
