    There is only one answer.

    • +5

      Camry is a bit big…

      • +24

Corolla sedan, pretty much a miniaturised Camry lol

        • +9

10k budget doesn't go far for corollas these days!

      • +2

        $10,000 2013 Camry = 400,000km on odo

    • +4

Lime Green Nissan Exa's are really hard to find though

      • What about a hypershift CR-X?

        • Don't be silly, what they want is the RVR Hyper Sportsgear R!

    • Hayabusa.

      You know it makes sense.

    • AMG for those high yield investments

  • -4

    LOL.

  • +7

Just to name a few possible used car for under 10k - Lancer, Rio, Swift, Yaris, Alto, I20.

  • +3

    Corolla hatch.

    • +3

Might be hard to get for 10k unless its very old and with lots of mileage.

  • Manual or auto?

    • +1

      AUTOMATIC Cars only please

  • +14

It’s not hard. Any hatchback from Japan or Korea. Toyota, mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia,etc . Corolla, Yaris, Mazda 3 or 2, lancer, i30, cerato, rio etc Pick one you like the look of. Give it a test drive (or get a friend to do it) sit in it etc.

Smaller is better as a learner unless you need to cart a few people or a fair bit of stuff very regularly.

    • Thank you - will save these ….

      • -8

Just be sure to do your research for the Korean brands (Hyundai and Kia)..Don't know if it's for the recent models but you don't want to be human bbq.

    • +1

      …and Suzuki. Swift, Kizashi etc.

      • +1

Knew there was at least one brand I was missing

    • Avoid Honda Jazz with CVT

      • It’s pretty much avoid anything with cvt isn’t it?

  • +2

    Corolla.

Learnt to drive on one way back when. On my third one now.

    Year not less than 2013

Not going to happen with your budget unless it has stupidly high mileage.

    • Thank you for suggestion -

    • understand that — I need to save more for spending high - But will increase my budget it is Coralla -
Toyotas are expensive even in used car section

      • +1

Yes, because Toyotas are known to be reliable cars even if you don't take great care of them.

        • +3

Partly. But mainly because consumers are driving the price through a 'perceived' superiority.

If you were keeping it for the long haul, buying genuine parts and using Toyota servicing, the l purchase logic landscape changes. There is more to car ownership and maintenance than just buying the badge.

The part about not taking great care and yet they are forgiving is quite funny. Thanks

  • +14

You're not going to get a car that's 2013 or newer with rego, CTP AND insurance for under $10K. Either increase your budget or pick a car from the mid-2000s onwards.

Reverse camera - poor driving skills for parking

Practice your parking skills more. You can't rely on technology.

    • true - thanks for ur time & suggestions..

    • +5

This, reverse parking isn't exactly a natural thing to do that comes intuitively to everyone, the only real way to get good at it is practice. Find an empty parking lot, get out some cones and learn how to do it.

Everyone should be able to drive without that stuff. It's meant to make life easier, not a substitute for driving skills.

      • yes , my brother is a professional mechanical engineer & 20+ years driver - he suggested the same to me …

    • +3

Not sure about that. Surely you can get a micro hatch (swift, i20, rio) for well under 10k without too many ks.

Edit - maybe not? I bought a swift 3 years ago, 2013 model, during covid, for 7k. Somehow they've gone up since then?

    • +1

Of course you can. I bought a registered 2013 Commodore for $4500 at the height of Covid pricing. It does around town family duties without missing a beat. It meets all of OP's criteria. If you narrowly focus on brand, you will miss well priced alternatives in good condition.

      • Got examples to share with the OP then?

Most likely that Commodore was a repairable write off or has insanely high kilometres or something.

        • -2

Depends on what is available in OP's area. You seem pretty combative, what else would you like to tell me about my purchase?

    Welcome to Ozbargain
    You get 2 choices

It's either a High Yield Investment Mercedes C63 AMG
    or
    Toyota Camry/Corolla

    There's no inbetween

    • No, not a C63, that would be decent.

A front wheel drive, 4cyl A200 with the 'AMG' styling pack for $80k

    • +1

High Yield Investment Mercedes C63 AMG

It's so funny that people are still getting jabs in about that douche

  • +1

    & Insurance….

Do some test quotes… you might be surprised how much of your budget that eats up.

    • Yes, i was thinking to allocate some savings to these additionally

      700$ for CTP REGO
      1500$ for Insurance
      300$ for navigation system
      300$ for Dashcams

that makes it to 2800 to 3000$ for extras ….

I am saving up for these as well…

      • 300$ for navigation system

        Just use a phone holder?

        • +1

Yes, i have a spare android phone - which i could use a simple Boost mobile SIM and make it a navigation system - Thanks for this

          • +7

@GGPS: Don't do this. You'll get caught and lose your licence.

            • @kerfuffle: Really, your not allowed to use a phone to navigate? How are you supposed to find places without a navigation system?

          • @GGPS: Or you could just get a vent phone holder and use your actual phone (when you are allowed)- you don't need a separate one.

        • +4

You know P-Plate drivers can't use their phones while driving … Right?

          • -2

            @kerfuffle: ohhh - is it ?!!

            • +9

@GGPS: It is concerning that you are learning how to drive a car and do not know the rules you’ll need to abide by should you get your P-plates. Strongly suggest reading the Road User Handbook.

          • -1

@kerfuffle: Even as pure navigation aids? I didn't know this at all. My P-plate years are decades behind.

I did speak to an insurance company the other week and the "do you use a phone or hands free kit" thing came up. When I explained that I use a dash mounted phone for navigation only, they seemed happy to say that didn't count as phone usage as long I as I wasn't actively messing with it whilst driving.

              • -1

                @kerfuffle:

Must not use any mobile phones, including hands-free devices or loudspeaker, while driving or while your vehicle is stopped but not parked

                Looked it up, seems correct.

          • +1

            @kerfuffle: no one can?

            • @Drakesy: Full-licence drivers, unlike P-Platers, can use their phones as a navigation device while driving. In NSW at least; dunno about where you are in WA.

              • +2

                @kerfuffle:

Learner, P1 and P2 drivers must NOT use a portable device, such as a mobile phone that is not mounted securely in the vehicle, for any function while driving (including while stationary but not parked).

Sounds like if it's mounted securely you can?

                • -2

@Drakesy: Except you're quoting WA rules, which are irrelevant to the OP.

                  • +1

                    @kerfuffle: It's straight from the Vicroads website…

It seems Sydney is a little stricter though, although "use" doesn't imply directly interacting vs looking at it.

                    • -2

@Drakesy: Didn't know Sydney or Perth were in Victoria; news to me.

          • @kerfuffle: Can they use nav systems at all in NSW? I think in Vic you basically can't touch anything but the steering wheel

            • +2

@seannami: You can use a dedicated GPS device

            • @seannami: In Vic you can use your phone as a navigation device even on P's. Its a recent change. According to vicroads, you arent allowed to touch it while driving on P's, and have to stop your car on the side of the road if you want to

        • In some states, you cant use your phone as navigation if you are on P plate

      • You could probably knock a bit off the Dashcams if you get a Navman on sale at JB (got mine for $130, they have $99 models), you can get a hardwire kit for $50 if your keen, or just use the cig lighter. I just got the cheapest I could find for the rear (Essos from supercheap, was $40 at the time) or some Coles have Blapunkt ones for $50 at the moment in special buys). The Essos will be a little bit filmed on a potato, but if its just for proving no fault and maybe getting plates, then its not like you need broadcast quality. My navman is about on par with my phone camera.

      • -2

        300$ for navigation system

As opposed to mounting your phone on a $20 holder?

        • Did you not read the comments? OP can't use their phone as a navigation device while driving in NSW until they're off their P-Plates.

          • @kerfuffle:

Did you not read the comments?

Agreed, I haven't read all of them.

  • Based on my experiences buying a small used car for my wife last year, I think you are going to be struggling to find anything that meets all those requirements and budget.

For example a 2014 DJ Mazda 2 auto, has no reverse camera and was already over $10k before factoring in insurance.

My understanding also is you are not allowed to use parking aids in the driving test and have to turn them off, so they need to learn to park without them anyway.

Manuals also tend to go a fair bit cheaper than autos from what I saw.

    • Yes, i am not going to use reverse camera for exam -
But what u said is true - budget to requirements matching is tough ….

    • Not sure about other states, but this is not the case for NSW.

"You may use reversing cameras and sensors to aid reversing. However, you must also check your mirrors and the area around your vehicle. If your vehicle has a park assist device, this must be switched off for the reversing manoeuvres."

      • Fair enough, the part I read just said about park assist devices and didn't mention sensors specifically, so I had assumed that they included sensors and cameras as park assist devices.

None-the-less, you shouldn't need them to complete the driving test in a small car. The criteria is pretty lenient as it is…

  • +5

Tip: 1st car as a newbie driver, don’t expect it to remain in perfect condition. Causing a little panel damage in the first couple of years is inevitable.

    • Thank you quick link - I was able to get all my requirements & under budget for Holden cars ….
But everyone seems to make me feel like - i should stay-away from Holden cars -
why so ? How good are Holden Cruze / captiva ?

      • +2

How good are Holden Cruze / captiva ?

Not good, a simple google search will show you why

But really, none of the options in that search result are recommendable. High mileage on cars with known transmission faults, etc etc

        • Agreed !!

      • +1

        Consider a Holden Monaro

        • +1

I saw a low-kilometre, 20 years old example for sale in yellow at my car dealer last year. Was $52K.

Furthermore, considering OP says they have crap driving skills, do we really want them behind a car like the Monaro?

          • @kerfuffle: Yes, you're right. I recall a thread where the Holden Monaro driver was utterly confused by a roundabout

Edit: It was a Ford Mustang

          • +2

            @kerfuffle:

            crap driving skills

Mustang with the 4k slavlimiter copilot pack.

      • How good are Holden Cruze / captiva ?

Probably represents the worst of GM cars.

The Captiva especially has a bad rep regarding reliability (but what boggles me is that they are so popular on the roads)

      • If you live in a state with good LPG availability consider a dedicated LPG VE or VF commodore.

90c per litre is very nice compared to petrol prices. Especially if you expect to do a lot of kilometres.

      • From my experience- a Holden on your Ps you need to also include a budget for several subbies and a few neons ;)

I can also depend on the kind of driving you intend to do, if you need cargo space, passengers (after your designated supervising driver).

PS, Spacebace set the max to $7500, if you up to $10k there are a few listed with under 100,000kms on the clock too

      • Holden Cruze are often labelled as the most unreliable cars as used cars. Old VW are also not reliable

    • +3
      • Front parking sensors
      • Rear parking sensors

      BMW ftw

    • +2

I'd go for the X3, it's been pre crashed, so you don't have to worry about damaging it. Plus being a 4 cyl BMW it will be super reliable and won't leak oil.

  • +5

Reverse camera - poor driving skills for parking

You are a learner, so learn to park without a reverse camera and you'll be fine once you getem licence. Your instructor should teach you how to adjust mirrors correctly.

    • +1

I agree, but sometimes there is a definite benefit for having a camera. E.g. poles that can't be seen with your rear view mirror, or even the end of trailors.

I don't have a camera in my car but for my next one would opt for one (..and what new car doesn't have one these days)

  • +3

If you're p plate, high chance insurance rego, stamp duty and other bits will set you back at least $3000, there is almost zero chance you can get any car newer than 2010 and with reverse camera.

  • -2

    Toyota C-HR
